Worldview As A Key To Understanding Spiritual Warfare With The Emphasis On Sanctification And Evangelism, Albert Kwamena Essandoh May 2003

Worldview As A Key To Understanding Spiritual Warfare With The Emphasis On Sanctification And Evangelism, Albert Kwamena Essandoh

College of Theology and Ministry Dissertations, Projects, & Theses

An examination of current literary works on spiritual warfare within this decade shows that there has been a struggle in understanding the issues that evolve under this subject. Missiologists have presented reports that baffle western theologians; however. these phenomena are not new to the non-westem reader, and they persist. Most western theologians who have not encountered these phenomena discount these experiences, presenting arguments from a sanctification point of view.

Renowned contemporary scholars whose perspectives on worldviews, sanctification, and evangelism contribute to this research include Peter Wagner, Clinton Arnold, Derek Tidball, Howard Ervin, James Sire, John Stott, Andrew W. Hoffecker, Russell …

Fundamentalism, William Vance Trollinger Jan 2003

Fundamentalism, William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

In America fundamentalism is a movement within Protestantism that was organized immediately after World War I in opposition to "modernism," which included liberal theology primarily, and also Darwinism and secularism. A subgroup of evangelicalism, fundamentalism staunchly affirmed with evangelicals "fundamentals of the faith," including the deity of Christ, his virgin birth, his bodily resurrection, and his substitutionary atonement. What distinguishes fundamentalists from other evangelicals is their strident opposition to modernism. They are, to quote George Marsden, "militant anti-modernist evangelicals."

[Introduction To] By The Hand Of Mormon: The American Scripture That Launched A New World Religion, Terryl Givens Jan 2003

[Introduction To] By The Hand Of Mormon: The American Scripture That Launched A New World Religion, Terryl Givens

Bookshelf

With over 100 million copies in print, the Book of Mormon has spawned a vast religious movement, but it remains little discussed outside Mormon circles. Now Terry L. Givens offers a full-length treatment of this influential work, illuminating the varied meanings and tempestuous impact of this uniquely American scripture.

Givens examines the text's role as a divine testament of the Last Days and as a sacred sign of Joseph Smith's status as a modern-day prophet. He assesses its claim to be a history of the pre-Columbian peopling of the Western Hemisphere, and later explores how the Book has been defined …

Ethics As Grammar: Changing The Postmodern Subject, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2001

Ethics As Grammar: Changing The Postmodern Subject, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Wittgenstein, one of the most influential, and yet widely misunderstood, philosophers of our age, confronted his readers with aporias—linguistic puzzles—as a means of countering modern philosophical confusions over the nature of language without replicating the same confusions in his own writings. In Ethics as Grammar, Brad Kallenberg uses the writings of theological ethicist Stanley Hauerwas as a foil for demonstrating how Wittgenstein’s method can become concrete within the Christian tradition. Kallenberg shows that the aesthetic, political, and grammatical strands epitomizing Hauerwas’s thought are the result of his learning to do Christian ethics by thinking through Wittgenstein.

Kallenberg argues that …

"This Great Modern Abomination": Orthodoxy And Heresy In American Religion, Terryl Givens Jan 2001

"This Great Modern Abomination": Orthodoxy And Heresy In American Religion, Terryl Givens

English Faculty Publications

In chapter 4, Terryl Givens provides a new view not only of the Christianity of Mormons but also more specifically of the religious motivations and methods for persecuting LDS people in nineteenth-century America. Givens's chapter is especially important as an examination of one of the worst examples of systematic religious intolerance in American history. According to Givens, for Americans' self-conception as a religiously tolerant nation to remain intact, a hegemonic rhetoric needed to emerge in the public sphere that denied the religious nature of Mormonism and instead described it as a political threat or social evil. Under the cover of …

Changes Within The Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference Of North America That Led To The Exit Of The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, Mark Braun

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

The following study presents the stages of the intersynodical debate that led the Wisconsin Ev. Lutheran Synod to exit the Ev. Lutheran Synodical Conference during the thirty years, 1931-61.Official source material is abundant. The synod's theological journal has presented a consistent viewpoint regarding the Scouting movement, the military chaplaincy, applications of the synod's teachings regarding church fellowship, and the inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible, all of which played key roles in Wisconsin's exit.
