By the early seventeenth century, English dissenters had developed a vital tradition of voluntary religious exercise operating within the shadow of the established church. Those who immigrated faced a new world of possibilities for public expression of religious commitment. How three generations of New Englanders altered and adapted these habits of religious sociability is the subject of this study.
The dissertation examines religious culture in Charlestown, Massachusetts through the history of three institutions: the family, the private devotional society, and the local church. The focus throughout is on lay religiosity and the interrelation of "private" and "public" religious activities. Church …

Historiography Of The Lutheran Confessions In America, 1830-1930, Charles Arand

In order to demonstrate the degree of impact that the attitudes of Lutherans toward their confessional writings had on the church of the nineteenth century, three distinct aspects of the scholarly writings will be examined. First, the attitude toward the subscription and application of the Confessions within the church will be examined. This will include both private writings and official church declarations. Secondly, the histories of the Confessions written by Lutherans necessarily focused on specific aspects to the exclusion of other elements. In that selectivity and interpretation is conveyed a particular attitude and value. Finally, the emphases and the ways …

This is a transcript of an ORU Chapel held on March 18, 1987 on the campus of Oral Roberts University. In this Chapel, President Roberts explains the need for $8 Million to keep the City of Faith, the Medical Missions Program, and Oral Roberts University afloat. As an act of faith, Roberts tells the students he will remain in the ORU Prayer Tower until April 1st, the deadline for raising the funds.

This is c. 1987 brochure is a four page advertisement announcing phase II of the Healing Outreach Center and including Journey Through the Bible Center on the campus of Oral Roberts University. The Journey Through the Bible was an interactive media presentation of biblical stories in decorated rooms. Phase one contained the creation room and Noah's ark. This pamphlet promoted Phase II which was being planned.

The 1986 meeting of the Kings Mountain Baptist Association met at First Baptist Church and Macedonia Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, NC. The minutes are dedicated to the memory of Rev. Fred Wells. The Women's Missionary Union (WMU) celebrated its 100th Anniversary; the Association's chapter of WMU was recognized as Distinguished for 1985-6. Five committees were proposed to be added to the Constitution.
