School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
Syncretic Spirits / Espíritus Sincréticos is a multimedia exhibition that invites viewers into a fantastical space where cultural identity and perception intertwine. Colorful shaped panels, sculptural installations, prints, and drawings bridge physical and metaphysical realms. Personal archetypes intuitively inspired by natural forms drive the work.
Influenced by the dualities of my upbringing as a first-generation Mexican American, I was immersed in Mexican culture through my family traditions while finding a home in the nurturing embrace of the heartland. The work has become a means of reclaiming a new layered sense of self, disentangling from my Catholic upbringing, embracing indigenous healing …

Antiphons Of Iron And Blood: The Inspirations Of Tolkien's Poetry, Patrick J. Lyon
Antiphons Of Iron And Blood: The Inspirations Of Tolkien's Poetry, Patrick J. Lyon
Journal of Tolkien Research
The new book, The Collected Poems of J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Christina Scull and Wayne Hammond, is a fascinating new look into a trove of previously unpublished Tolkien poetry. One of these new poems, “Ferrum et Sanguis,” includes an interesting series of addenda and subtitles written by Tolkien that give insight into the origins and inspirations for the poem. Furthermore, the interpretation given by the editors in their commentary on the poem misses the specific reference and applies it to a different source. The real source for the poem is very likely found in the Advent Vespers of the …
Implementing A Paleographical Analysis To Provenance A Spanish Sanctorale, Amelia Lutz, Robert Fritz Ph.D
Implementing A Paleographical Analysis To Provenance A Spanish Sanctorale, Amelia Lutz, Robert Fritz Ph.D
Posters-at-the-Capitol
A 17th-century Latin sanctorale held in the collection of the Saint Meinrad Archabbey features marginalia written in Spanish, but its place of origin and past ownership is otherwise unknown. Drawing on clues derived from a paleographical analysis of marginalia and a hymn pasted into the back cover, I have gathered evidence suggesting that the sanctorale originated in or was formerly owned by one of the religious orders in the Spanish city of Alcalá de Henares. A key piece of evidence is handwriting that adapts one of the chants to praise Saints Justus and Pastor, the patron saints of Alcalá. This …

The Mystical City Of God: The Angels And Anthropological Identity, Depicted Through Mary, Gilbert Perez
The Mystical City Of God: The Angels And Anthropological Identity, Depicted Through Mary, Gilbert Perez
Obsculta
A quick reflection on the mystical experiences of Maria of Jesus of Ágreda. Focusing on the importance of Angelology within greater Catholic thought by highlighting its deep relationship with Mary, the Mother of God. Moving from a slow understanding of knowledge concerning God, multiple excerpts from the text cover varying aspects of human identity by investigating the knowledge concerning the angels. Culminating in Mary, and how she becomes an adored creation that reveal human and angelic anthropology.
