Return To Me: Lenten Reflections From Holy Cross (2020), Office Of Mission
Return To Me: Lenten Reflections From Holy Cross (2020), Office Of Mission
Office of Mission Publications
This reflection booklet was prepared by the Office of Mission at the College of the Holy Cross to serve as a prayer aid throughout the liturgical season of Lent. Within these pages are the unique voices of many people from the Holy Cross community: faculty, staff, students, alumni, administrators, members of the Board of Trustees, benefactors of the College and Jesuits. Each contributor reflects on the readings prescribed for the Mass of the day and while we hope that their own prayers help you to pray, we hope, too, that the reflections contained herein might also help to serve as …

Flower Unfurling: Buddhist Modernism And The Early Writing Of James Joyce, Erin Garrow
Flower Unfurling: Buddhist Modernism And The Early Writing Of James Joyce, Erin Garrow
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation traces the history of the references to Buddhism in Stephen Hero, James Joyce’s first and unpublished novel, through the author’s previous writing, his sources, and his context, in order to determine how—if at all—the tradition bore upon his earliest depiction of consciousness. Acknowledging that Joyce habitually revisited and refined earlier ideas and prose, it attends to previous essays, notebooks, book reviews, conversations, letters, epiphanies, poems, and autobiographical prose; to available material, bibliographical, and biographical evidence about the specific volumes and performances to which Joyce had access; to language and paratext—including advertisements, introductions, and appended essays—in those volumes; …

The Catholic Church And The Turn Of The 20th Century: An Anthropology Of Human Flourishing And A Church For Peace, Maria Siebels
The Catholic Church And The Turn Of The 20th Century: An Anthropology Of Human Flourishing And A Church For Peace, Maria Siebels
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This paper will explore the connections between the 20th century’s unsurpassed violence and the Catholic Church’s adoption of anthropology of human dignity and flourishing, resulting in a call and commission for peace as seen in Pacem et Terris, Gaudium et Spes, and the Catholic Worker Movement.
The Indispensability Of Inculturation For Effective Evangelization: Revisiting The Evangelization Of Sub-Saharan Africa, Mark Obeten
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This paper argues that the incarnation is a profound moment in the redemptive plan of God and hence paradigm of evangelization. It demonstrates that non-inculturated evangelization lacks depth and may lose the fruits of its labor with time. The evangelization of Sub-Saharan Africa is used as a case in point to show this connection between evangelization and inculturation as inevitable.
Introducing Queer Theology, Cole Epping
Introducing Queer Theology, Cole Epping
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
The paper works through the sources of queer theology, giving special attention to how these sources are used in published works. Further, the paper explores the doctrine of the Trinity as a model of “radical friendship”, a relational model that is inclusive to LGBTQ+ folks, as well as the inadvertent queerness of Von Balthasar’s writings on the Trinity.

Saint Peter's Bones: A History Of His Findings, Enrique Torner
Saint Peter's Bones: A History Of His Findings, Enrique Torner
World Languages & Cultures Department Publications
The purpose of this short research article is to bring to light a fact that very few people know: that the supposed bones of St. Peter that lie at the bottom of St. Peter’s basilica were found as a result of Pope Pius XII purposefully and secretly organizing an excavation below the church during the difficult and dangerous years of World War II. It is also the intention of this article to emphasize the antagonistic forces inside the Vatican surrounding this amazing finding, as well as to describe the long and controversial process of finding and identifying the bones of …
Art At The Service Of Prayer: The Immaculate Conception Chapel, Lawrence Frizzell
Art At The Service Of Prayer: The Immaculate Conception Chapel, Lawrence Frizzell
Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell
More than four decades ago, Father Philip Rotunno founded the Good Shepherd Community at Seton Hall University, bringing families associated with his work as the first Director of Campus Ministry together with the immigrant Catholic families living in the Ivy Hill Apartments. In 1990, I took on the challenge of priestly ministry in collaboration with the well-formed group of lay leaders. The present series of essays on the pedagogical insights offered by Seton Hall's Immaculate Conception Chapel Chapel was prompted by questions of the Good Shepherd children. As I explained the elements of Catholic worship fostered by the architecture and art …
