Examining The Catholic Intellectual Tradition, Anthony J. Cernera, Ed., Oliver J. Morgan, Ed. Jan 2000

Examining The Catholic Intellectual Tradition, Anthony J. Cernera, Ed., Oliver J. Morgan, Ed.

Sacred Heart University Press Books

This collection of essays by a variety of educators, scholars, and theologians lays out some of the content behind the term "Catholic intellectual tradition," a tradition that is both a treasury of classic and contemporary texts, including religious and aesthetic products, and a "way of doing things" borne of experience, prayer, and critical reflection. Contributions focus on such topics as the ideal of the Catholic mind, the relationship between Catholicism and other faith traditions, notions of the Catholic artist and intellectual, and future directions for Catholic universities.

Teaching Prayer: Pilot Survey Of Academic Courses On Personal Prayer, E. James Baesler Jan 2000

Teaching Prayer: Pilot Survey Of Academic Courses On Personal Prayer, E. James Baesler

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

The practical concerns of an individual interested in learning about prayer in an academic context are interconnected with the practical concerns about teaching an academic course on prayer. A pilot study proposed to investigate and evaluate the context and content of academic courses on personal prayer from the perspective of teaching prayer, asking what proportion of institutions of higher education offer courses on prayer, in which department, and on what level. The search was limited to the Christian faith, and in particular to private colleges and universities of the Catholic denomination. An online Internet search yielded a sample of 126 …

Better Safe Than Sorry? Y2k, Preparation, And The Foreclosing Of The Future, Susan L. Trollinger Jan 2000

Better Safe Than Sorry? Y2k, Preparation, And The Foreclosing Of The Future, Susan L. Trollinger

English Faculty Publications

My purpose in taking a rhetorical approach to Y2K discourse is threefold. First, by suspending the question of h·uth and asking a question of rhetorical effects, I can take this popular discourse seriously without granting at the outset its claim to truth in its predictions. Third, a study of its workings and effects may provide occasion to move beyond the binary oppositions Y2K discourse seeks to pose between belief and unbelief, preparedness and foolishness. Resisting those binaries allows one to answer other questions …
