Holy Cross Comes To Cleveland: A Partnership In Catholic Secondary Education, James Gutowski
Holy Cross Comes To Cleveland: A Partnership In Catholic Secondary Education, James Gutowski
2022 Faculty Bibliography
In 1943 Bishop Edward F. Hoban came to Cleveland, Ohio, as coadjutor bishop to Archbishop Joseph Schrembs. Having risen to the episcopacy under the tutelage of Archbishop George Mundelein of Chicago, Hoban shared his mentor’s propensity for expanding and streamlining the work of his diocese, including education. Hoban’s efforts to expand Catholic high school education in Cleveland began at the same time that the Brothers of Holy Cross, led by Brother Ephrem O’Dwyer, C.S.C., sought to become an independent province within their congregation. Over the next twenty years, this confluence of institutional needs induced brother and bishop to develop a …

Music And Sound In Weihsien Internment Camp In Japanese-Occupied China, Zhihui Sophia Geng
Asian Studies Faculty Publications
From the chapter's Introduction:
On 7 July 1937, Japanese forces based in Manchuria charged southward towards Beijing, invading north China and hence starting the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–45). These Allied citizens included individuals and their families who worked in China as government officials, executives, engineers and Christian missionaries. They were forced into internment camps under the watchful eyes of the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This project considers the cognitive dissonance experienced by Salvadoran Catholics as civil war violence and their Catholic faith came face-to-face with Romero’s path towards canonization gathered momentum. Through binational, ethnographic observation and interviews, I gathered diverse and sometimes contradictory perspectives of local Salvadorans, transnational pilgrims at the celebration of Romero’s beatification, and Salvadoran Catholics in Los Angeles. I center the beatification event rather than the canonization mass at the Vatican two years later, in 2018, because my primary concern is the meaning Romero holds for Salvadoran’s themselves, including those living in the United States. Through the beatification and canonization, the …
