Musical Compositions about the Marianist Charism
This hymn is a classic example of the "alma mater" anthem style developed in the United States by 1920. With lyrics well-rhymed and vocabulary virile, it is an excellent example of the self-confident Catholicism emergent in early 20th-century America. This well-crafted hymn by the then very young Brother Paul Wessling, S.M., can be said to presage our outstanding bicentennial anthem recently composed by award-winning Brother Howard Hughes, S.M. In Brother Howard’s anthem, the “Soldiers of Christ” theme is replaced by “Saints for Our Time” — the universal call to holiness — given today’s flourishing Marianist Lay Communities and the now …

The Dominican Contemplatives By A Dominican Of Carisbrooke (With A Preface By The Very Rev. Father Bede Jarrett, O.P), A Dominican Of Carisbrooke, The Very Reverend Father Bede Jarrett, O.P. (Preface)
Historical Catholic and Dominican Documents
Father Jarrett expounds on the characteristics and the meaning of contemplation as one method of prayer in seeking God. The focus of meditating on an aspect of divine truth in prayer engages both the heart and mind and is considered among one of the highest forms of prayer. While acknowledging the abandonment of secular life for a contemplative life is not for all, Father Jarrett maintains all can and should incorporate contemplative prayer in their life as a means for a fuller understanding of the Christian life.

Phantastes Chapter 8: Faust, Goethe
German Romantic and Other Influences
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), was a German writer associated with the Sturm and Drang (Storm and Stress) literary movement. Faust 1 (1806) has Mephistopheles, a minion for the devil, seduce Faust into selling his soul to the devil. Faust, in turn, seduces a young woman, ultimately destroying her. In Faust 2 (1831), Faust goes on a series of adventures, meets some fairies, and finally atones for some of his sins and is able to enter Heaven.
