Good Fences And Good Neighbors? Biblical Scholars And Theologians, Jean-Pierre Ruiz May 2007

Good Fences And Good Neighbors? Biblical Scholars And Theologians, Jean-Pierre Ruiz

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

The author takes occasion of the decision by the American Academic of Religion to separate its annual meetings from those of the Society for Biblical Literature, to reflect on the challenging disciplinary frontier arrayed between systematic theology and biblical studies. In particular, he calls for critical theological interpretation of the claims of biblical scholarship, bearing in mind the contextuality of all discourses. For their part, biblical scholars should call systematic theologians to operate within the framework of what Fernando Segovia has called a hermeneutics of otherness and engagement, as a preface to reading with exegetes and other academic, pastoral, professional …

The So-Called Mixed Text: An Examination Of The Non-Alexandrian And Non-Byzantine Text-Type In The Catholic Epistles, Clinton S. Baldwin

Dissertations

Problem. Since the eighteenth century, textual scholars have been grouping New Testament Greek manuscripts into groups called text-types in order to evaluate the thousands of variant readings found in these manuscripts. These text-types form the basis for determining the earliest form of the text--the primary goal of New Testament Textual Criticism. Almost all textual critics recognize three main text types: Alexandrian, Western, and Byzantine. However, in recent times, W. Larry Richards and his followers identified a "mixed text-type" in six books of the Catholic Epistles that is distinguishable from the already established text-types. This text-type if supported by empirical investigation …

Tribulations Of The Patriarch Joseph And Jesus In Greek And Latin Piety, Lawrence Frizzell May 2005

Tribulations Of The Patriarch Joseph And Jesus In Greek And Latin Piety, Lawrence Frizzell

Department of Religion Publications

The dramatic account of Joseph and his brothers in Genesis 37-50 has been the subject of many commentaries and reflections, by both Jews and Christians. How have the questions of crime and forgiveness been treated as a major theme by Christians? From early texts the pious effort to interpret the biblical message into a coherent whole led to a link between Joseph and Jesus. How has this been developed in the first millennium of Christianity? Father Frizzell examined this theme in “Tribulations of the Patriarch Joseph and Jesus in Greek and Latin Piety,” which he originally presented at the Medieval …

Interreligious Dialogue In Global Perspective, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil. Jan 2002

Interreligious Dialogue In Global Perspective, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

The tensions between religions and political systems have been evident in intellectual and cultural contexts throughout human experience. In past ages, there has been a propensity for each culture or religion to assume that it embodied the best in every aspect of the human order. There is no longer any excuse for such narrowness spawned of ignorance to dominate the thinking of educated people. Yet mere tolerance of other approaches to the common challenges of humanity will not provide security for all, especially for minorities within a culture or for weaker societies in a given region striving to maintain their …

New Voices In The Tradition: Medieval Hagiography Revisited, Marie Anne Mayeski Jan 2002

New Voices In The Tradition: Medieval Hagiography Revisited, Marie Anne Mayeski

Theological Studies Faculty Works

The author argues for the use of hagiographical texts to expand the evidence for the theological tradition, precisely during the early Middle Ages when more obvious sources are wanting. Her thesis is that there is sound basis for reading the lives of the saints through the lens of doctrinal theology. After giving this evidence, she then exemplifies the value of such a reading by an ecclesiological analysis of Rudolf of Saxony’s life of St. Leoba, a companion of St. Boniface.]

Bounded Identities: Women And Religion In Colonial Brazil, 1550–1750, Carole Myscofski

Scholarship

style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">This article examines the creation of women’s gender identity in the religious discourse of colonial Brazil and documents the creation of two separate norms—one for elite women and another for slave, lower-class, and mixed-race women. The Roman Catholic Church, closely linked with the Portuguese monarchic state and its colonial ambitions, transmitted both norms in religious guidebooks, missionary letters and sermons. This summary centers on the defining role for women in marriage, and indicates that the epoch of colonial Brazil is particularly important for feminist study. With the increasingly disparate perspectives on women from Late …

Mary And The Biblical Heritage Jan 1995

Mary And The Biblical Heritage

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

Throughout the ages, the Church and her teachers often acknowledged that the fourfold Gospel offers only a limited number of passages that feature the Mother of Jesus. Undaunted, the great doctors of the early Church and the theologians of the Middle Ages found abundant resources for their meditation concerning Mary in the Jewish Scriptures and literature related to the New Testament. The theological premise that God is the principal author of the entire Bible led them to find hints and images of the Messiah everywhere. Recognizing that the link of Jesus to the people of Israel is Mary, his Mother, …

You are not a Christian because you’ve been baptized, quote, unquote, in the Spirit, you’re a Christian because you’ve received Jesus and been made partaker of the Divine Nature and the Divine attributes of God are there …

The interpretation of ancient texts focuses on issues which can be common to several religious traditions.' Within the Jewish and Christian expressions of theology over the centuries, the task of relating the contents of earlier documents to different cultures and philosophies of life has been tackled from many angles. In recent years the work of Claude Levi-Strauss and Paul Ricoeur has suggested new approaches to fundamental hermeneutical questions.
