Pentecostal Hope In The Age Of Covid-19, Peter Althouse, Audrey E. Mccormick
Pentecostal Hope In The Age Of Covid-19, Peter Althouse, Audrey E. Mccormick
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
This research sought to identify how Pentecostals and charismatics responded to the Coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, what role did eschatology play in provoking hope, and how did theologies on healing influence responses? Data revealed that Pentecostals were generally not casting their responses to the pandemic as a millennial expectation of a better future but were grieving their losses and seeking to provoke hope amidst suffering. While minimal miraculous healings were reported, healing was cast primarily as the ongoing presence of defiant hope amidst trauma, grief and suffering. We propose that grief and grieving is an eschatological response to loss and death.
The Great Rebellion And The Mystery Of Lawlessness In 2 Thessalonians 2,1-12, Ranko Stefanovic
The Great Rebellion And The Mystery Of Lawlessness In 2 Thessalonians 2,1-12, Ranko Stefanovic
Faculty Publications
This article provides an expository study of 2 Thessalonians 2,1-12 in which Paul delineates the Christian history from his day until the Second Coming. The apostle contends that the Christian history will be characterized by a great spiritual rebellion against God organized by Satan. The apostle points to the central roles of two entities in that great rebellion, which he defines in terms of “the man of lawlessness” as the agent of Satan and “the restrainer” who for some time holds back the full revelation of that lawless figure on the world scene. Bible commentaries offer various proposal on the …

Review Of "Come, Lord Jesus", H. Michael Shultz Jr.
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
This review examines John Piper's 2023 Come, Lord Jesus. The book is shown to be a valuable contribution to the broader eschatological field, and a particular contribution to the Historic Premillennialist camp.
Platonism’S Influence On The Hermeneutic Of Augustine: Exploring The Philosophical Roots Of Augustine’S Interpretive Approach, Kent T. Maitland
Platonism’S Influence On The Hermeneutic Of Augustine: Exploring The Philosophical Roots Of Augustine’S Interpretive Approach, Kent T. Maitland
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
This paper contends that Augustine was a significant contributor to the “Spiritual Vision Model” of the Christian conception of heaven described by Craig Blaising. This model is premised on the Platonic understanding of perfection in which the soul unites with the Good, and heaven is primarily a cognitive state in which the individual possesses perfect spiritual knowledge. This model also provides a rational basis for favoring a figurative or spiritualized interpretation of Scripture over its literal meaning. Augustine’s early life and conversion reflects a commitment to the SVM’s Platonic ideals, as demonstrated in his deference to Cicero, his journey into …
Covenant-Apocalyptic Soteriology: N. T. Wright’S Apocalyptic Jesus In Conversation With The Liberationist Critique Of Atonement, Joseph Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation develops a theory of atonement in accordance with N. T. Wright’s covenant-apocalyptic interpretation of the ministry and message of the historical Jesus. A covenant-apocalyptic atonement theory, in opposition to the trajectory of contemporary soteriology, prioritizes divine causality in the means of salvation, because, as is generally expected from an apocalyptic hermeneutic, it peers behind systems of violence and oppression to the intangible powers that underlie them. Unlike other strands of apocalyptic theology, though, a covenant-apocalyptic soteriology can stand up to a liberationist critique of the escapism and the divine sadism of a certain popular form of Christian soteriology, …
The Reconciliation Of Future Israel In Romans 9–11, Kent T. Maitland
The Reconciliation Of Future Israel In Romans 9–11, Kent T. Maitland
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
This paper contends that supersessionism does not adequately understand the soteriological concept of reconciliation as it applies specifically to Israel because it does not correctly understand the apostolic hermeneutic. Reconciliation refers to the ending of hostility between two parties, which encompasses the removal of the root cause of the enmity in order to effect a change in their relationship from “enemy” to “friend.” While reconciliation describes the work of salvation accomplished in Christ for all humanity, it takes on additional significance when applied to Israel. In Romans 9–11, Paul highlights Israel’s enmity with God, God’s provision for removing the enmity’s …
Counseling In The Already, Not Yet: Reflections On The Work Of The Christian Counselor Through An Eschatological Lens, Haley Rae French
Counseling In The Already, Not Yet: Reflections On The Work Of The Christian Counselor Through An Eschatological Lens, Haley Rae French
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, this article reflects on the work of the Christian counselor through an eschatological lens, specifically exploring the notion of what it means to counsel in the “already, not yet.” The counseling process is presented as a place in which the dialectics of this eschatological tension are present and outworked. Pain and suffering are encountered and explored as the counselor stands in solidarity with the sufferer, and yet the Christian counselor also anticipates hope and the power of change in the present, particularly as ushered in by the eschatological Spirit of God. To this end, …

“‘Shaking the Heavens and the Earth’: Daniel and the Eschatology of Hebrews”— Hebrews 12:28 contains an allusion to Daniel 7:18. This allusion may seem vague at first, but its study reveals that this last passage feeds into the eschatology of Hebrews. The purpose of this article is to explore the role that the allusion to Daniel 7:18 plays in the argument of Hebrews 12:18-28 and in the understanding of the eschatology of the Epistle to the Hebrews. To this end, the article is divided into two sections. The first section examines the reasons for holding that there is an allusion …
A Hopeful Eschatology And The Role Of The Ekklesia Prior To The Parousia, Charles Graves
A Hopeful Eschatology And The Role Of The Ekklesia Prior To The Parousia, Charles Graves
Theology Undergraduate Work
When Jesus ascended to the right hand of the Father, He did not leave the earth or abandon His mission. Rather, He gave His disciples a commission to go into all of the world and proclaim Gospel of the Kingdom to all creation (Mark 16:15). He gave them an assignment that was impossible to accomplish without the empowerment and enablement of His Spirit. While giving them such a high command, He also gave them beautiful promises about the hope of the resurrection and the coming new heavens and new earth. This future hope motivated them to engage His realities in …
Adventist Eschatological Identity And The Interpretations Of The Time Periods Of Daniel 12:11-12, Abner F. Hernandez
Adventist Eschatological Identity And The Interpretations Of The Time Periods Of Daniel 12:11-12, Abner F. Hernandez
Abner Hernandez
In recent years some Seventh-day Adventist scholars began applying the time periods in Dan 12:5-13 to the future. Rejecting the traditional historicist Adventist understanding that places the three and a half times, the 1290 and 1335 days, as prophetic periods already fulfilled in the past, they claim that these time periods should be understood as literal days still to come. Likewise, some Adventist scholars interpret the time periods of Dan 12 as merely a literary device that seems to suggest an apparent “delay” of the time of the end. There are others who think it is not possible to state …
The Perfect And Complete Gospel Of Both Comings Of Jesus Christ: Reclaiming Eschatology In Pentecostal Proclaimation Of The Gospel, David Hebert
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Th is article is written to encourage a return to a position fi rmly entrenched in traditional Pentecostal and Charismatic eschatology that includes both comings of Jesus Christ in the proclamation of the Gospel. It develops the concept of the “Perfect/Complete Gospel of Both Comings of Jesus Christ,” identifying it as an emphasis in both historic Christianity in general and Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity in particular. And in light of Oral Roberts’ vision received in August 2004, the article concludes with an exhortation to reconsider this proclamation in light of the imminent return of Jesus Christ.

Oral Roberts And The Hebrew Bible, Eric N. Newberg, Samuel Hogan
Oral Roberts And The Hebrew Bible, Eric N. Newberg, Samuel Hogan
Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology
Oral Roberts held a favorable view of Jewish people and viewed the restoration of the state of Israel as the fulfillment of biblical prophecy. This article recounts a key facet of the Jewish outreach of the Oral Roberts Evangelistic Association, the Hebrew Bible project. In collaboration with Myron Sackett, Oral Roberts sponsored the publication of a Hebrew Bible (Old and New Testaments) and distributed it in Israel and other countries. Roberts was motivated by a desire to play a major role in the conversion of the Jewish people in the last days. By means of exhaustive research of relevant source …
The Problem With Wesley’S Postmillennialism: An Exegetical Case For Historic Premillennialism In 21st Century Wesleyan Theology And Missions, Timothy J. Christian
The Problem With Wesley’S Postmillennialism: An Exegetical Case For Historic Premillennialism In 21st Century Wesleyan Theology And Missions, Timothy J. Christian
The Asbury Journal
This article presents an exegesis of Revelation 20:1-10 followed by a critical assessment of Wesley’s interpretation of Revelation 20:1-10. Overall, Wesley’s postmillennial interpretation of Revelation 20:1-10 is not supported by an exegetical reading of Revelation 20:1-10 (Scripture); it is not rooted in the early church (tradition); and it is based largely upon the optimism of the 18th century which was shattered by the 20th century (experience). Historic premillennialism, however, does exegetical justice to Revelation 20:1-10 (Scripture), takes seriously the early church’s view (tradition), and accords with our reason and experience in the 21st century (reason and experience). As such, Wesleyans …

Misinterpreted End-Time Issues: Five Myths In Adventism, Jiri Moskala Thd, Phd
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
"realize that my unpleasant Christian experience was built on five misunderstandings which assumed that the Bible and/or the Spirit of Prophecy: (1) teach that believers will only receive the seal of God at the end of time; (2) stand against the assurance of salvation; (3) affirm that living believers can be called and examined in the pre-advent judgment at any time; (4) proclaim that after the close of probation the Holy Spirit will be removed from the earth meaning that even believers will be without any supernatural help; and (5) declare that believers in Jesus Christ will be on their …

Weathering The End Times, Donald W. Holdridge Sr.
Eruditio Ardescens
“Weathering the End Times” first addresses some of the major arguments for and against man-caused Climate Change, and then portrays where the various elements of Christendom fall within this debate. It goes on to examine the prophetic Scriptures that relate to the environments of the Tribulation, Millennial Kingdom and Eternal State, concluding that God-caused Climate Change is what believers truly need to focus on.
Isaiah’S Messiah: Adventist Identity For The Last Days, Stephane Beaulieu
Isaiah’S Messiah: Adventist Identity For The Last Days, Stephane Beaulieu
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society
This article proposes that Isaiah’s Messiah is the essence of Adventism and is what Adventists must proclaim in the eschaton. Portraits of the Messiah and His work for the people of God permeate the book of Isaiah. And while Isaiah’s Messiah was relevant for the people of the seventh century, the Messiah is portrayed as the One who will deliver and save His people now as well as then. In fact, Isaiah places his message of the Messiah in the realm of the last days.

Revisiting The Afterlife: The Inadequacies Of "Heaven" And "Hell", Christopher P. Davis
Revisiting The Afterlife: The Inadequacies Of "Heaven" And "Hell", Christopher P. Davis
Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research
This paper deals with some of the ambiguities that are associated with the intermediate and final states after death. Whereas many in the church have dismissed these concepts as myths of the ancients, this discussion shows how the grounding of such beliefs in the Hebrew mindset was the key to Jesus’ own teachings about the afterlife. The argument begins by developing a biblical anthropology over against the modern naturalistic anthropologies that have largely dominated the philosophical and theological scenes. From here we look at the Old Testament concept of the afterlife, and how the modern view that the Hebrews were …
Typology And Adventist Eschatological Identity: Friend Or Foe?, Erick Mendieta
Typology And Adventist Eschatological Identity: Friend Or Foe?, Erick Mendieta
Andrews University Seminary Student Journal
For Seventh-day Adventists the significance of typology is not only a matter of historical research. Davidson has rightly argued that “the historic Adventist interpretation of the sanctuary … stands or falls depending upon the validity of its hermeneutic method.” This study tries to show that in Seventh-day Adventism typology has proven to be a defining force in theology, thinking, and at times even in practice. Since typology’s first appearance in early Adventism, it has provided assistance to the understanding of Scripture but has also been the source of much misunderstanding. The need to explore its nature, characteristics, and application has …

Revelation 6:9-11: An Exegesis Of The Fifth Seal In The Light Of The Problem Of The Eschatological Delay, Patrice Allet
Dissertations
The fifth seal of Revelation has most often been treated from an anthropological perspective that appears to be clearly inadequate to account for the depth of this trigger passage located in a climactic setting. In and around the fifth seal, the text suggests indeed that the persecution of the last days has occurred. Imminence and delay do seem to intersect in the passage, creating a crisis of eschatological proportions which, in turn, raises questions of theodicy.
The purpose of this dissertation is to increase understanding of the fifth seal as a whole through a focused study of its delay motif …

"The Loved One Does Not Yet Know All She Shall Become": Mysticism As Eschatology In Medieval Writers., John C. Medendorp
CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses
New developments in the study of Western Christian mysticism demand that the mystics be interpreted theologically if we are to accept the mystics on their own terms and take them seriously. This study argues that the medieval mystics in Europe up to the 13th century understand their work to be eschatological in nature, interpreting the mystical experience of union with the Divine as an inbreaking or foretaste of the eschaton. Reading Hadewijch of Antwerp, a 13th century Dutch mystic, together with contributions from Augustine of Hippo, Bernard of Clarivaux, and Hildegard of Bingen, this study attempts to demonstrate that the …

The Origin Of The Eschatological Feast As A Wedding Banquet In The Synoptic Gospels: An Intertextual Study, Phillip J. Long
The Origin Of The Eschatological Feast As A Wedding Banquet In The Synoptic Gospels: An Intertextual Study, Phillip J. Long
Dissertations
The Problem. The problem this dissertation seeks to address is the origins of the wedding banquet imagery in the teaching of Jesus. Frequently, scholars will state that the image of a wedding banquet was a common messianic image in the first century. However, other than Isa 25:6-8, sources for the image of a banquet for the messianic age in the Hebrew Bible are sparse. Yet the image of a banquet clearly appears in the Synoptic Gospels in both the actions of Jesus as well as his teaching. Because the metaphor of a wedding banquet is not found in the literature …
The Quest For The Historical Jesus' Use Of Gehenna: A Critical Appraisal Of The Work Of N. T. Wright And His Portrayal Of The Eschatology Of The Historical Jesus, Ian C. Cole
M.A. in Biblical Studies Theses
The Quest for the Historical Jesus is a hallmark of modern biblical scholarship that has, in recent decades, given birth to the so-called “Third Quest.” A prominent “Third Quest” scholar, N. T. Wright, and his work are the focus of this study. After summarizing some of the monumental works of Historical Jesus research throughout its 200+ year history (chapter 1), this thesis presents a summary of Historical Jesus research since the 1980s (chapter 2) and then enters into specific dialog with the work of Wright. Wright’s portrait of the Historical Jesus is summarized, with special attention given to Wright’s presentation …
