Bathsheba's actions in 2 Sam. 11.2-4 identify crucial aspects of her character. Past commentators interpret these words in connection with menstrual purification, stressing the certain paternity of David's adulterine child. This article demonstrates that the participles rōheset and mitqaddesšet and the noun mittum'ātāh do not denote menstrual cleansing. Bathsheba's washing is an innocent bath. She is the only individual human to self-sanctify, placing her in the company of the Israelite deity. The syntax of the verse necessitates that her action of self-sanctifying occurs simultaneously as David lies with her. The three focal terms highlight the important legitimacy of Bathsheba before …

"Pilgrimage Into Pentecost: The Pneumatological Legacy Of Howard M. Ervin", Daniel D. Isgrigg
College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship
Howard M. Ervin, a Baptist and Pentecostal scholar, paved the way for other scholars to defend the Pentecostal faith in the academic world. During the last half of the twentieth century, charismatics, evangelicals and Pentecostals scholars have debated the nature and function of Spirit baptism. This paper explores the life and legacy of Dr. Howard Ervin and his impact on the Pentecostal-charismatic community.

A Helper Of Thy Faith And Joy: Elnathan Parr As A Pastoral Teacher Of Predestination In Early Stuart England., David H. Kranendonk
A Helper Of Thy Faith And Joy: Elnathan Parr As A Pastoral Teacher Of Predestination In Early Stuart England., David H. Kranendonk
CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses
This thesis demonstrates that Elnathan Parr‟s (1577-1622) treatment of divine predestination in his homiletical commentary on Romans and in his catechism entitled Grounds of Divinity evidences a pastoral approach in which the scholastic precision characteristic of the era does not lead to speculative aridity but serves positive spiritual purposes. Parr was neither afraid of nor obsessed by this part of the “whole counsel of God.” While his popular teaching incorporated detailed theological argumentation, including an extended examination of the supralapsarian-infralapsarian issue, his concern was to apply this doctrine through multiple types of “uses” to his spiritually diverse readership with the …

Monotheism, Polytheism, Monolatry, Or Henotheism? Toward An Assessment Of Divine Plurality In The Hebrew Bible, Michael Heiser
Monotheism, Polytheism, Monolatry, Or Henotheism? Toward An Assessment Of Divine Plurality In The Hebrew Bible, Michael Heiser
Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)
Israel’s view of God and his relationship to other divine beings in the Hebrew Bible has long been the subject of scholarly debate. The dominant critical consensus since the late nineteenth century holds that Israel’s faith evolved from polytheism or henotheism to monotheism. Passages in the Hebrew Bible that assume the existence of other gods are compared to other passages that put forth the declaration that “there are no other gods besides” the God of Israel as proof of this view. Other scholars who reject this evolutionary paradigm tend to assume passages evincing divine plurality actually speak of human beings, …

Paul And Asceticism In 1 Corinthians 9:27a, Kent L. Yinger
Paul And Asceticism In 1 Corinthians 9:27a, Kent L. Yinger
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Amidst the resurgence of interest in Paul and asceticism relatively little focus has been put upon one Pauline text with seemingly obvious ascetic potential: “I beat my body” (1 Corinthians 9:27a). After a brief introduction to the discussion of asceticism and an ascetic Paul, this article will survey the Wirkungsgeschichte of this text, especially in the patristic era, engage in exegesis of 1 Corinthians 9:27a, and draw conclusions as to the relevance of the text for discussion of Pauline asceticism.

Contrary to the common understanding, the “enemies of the cross of Christ” in Phil 3:18 are the same people who “proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry” in 1:15. These “enemies” want Paul’s fame, but not the suffering that is built into loving.
