SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations

The thesis explores the meaning of the concept of believing in the Gospel of John. Chapter 1 provides a discussion of the relevance of the subject and the methodology employed in the research. The methodology is primarily a semantic field approach emphasizing the importance context adds to the interpretation process. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 follow the same basic outline. The goal is to provide an analysis of [Special characters omitted.] within its syntactical relationships and verbal forms. Any relevant conclusions are then integrated into an exegetical discussion. A Freedom That Is No Freedom: Jeremiah 34 And The Sabbatical Principle, Rolf A. Jacobson

The “release” of the Hebrew slaves during the time of the Babylonian siege was a cynical affair, setting the slaves “free” from being provided food and shelter by their owners in a time of scarcity. The passage raises important questions about the nature of freedom: freedom from? freedom unto? freedom for?

Captain Moroni's Wartime Strategies: An Application For The Spiritual Battles Of Our Day, Richard J. Mcclendon Sep 2002

Captain Moroni's Wartime Strategies: An Application For The Spiritual Battles Of Our Day, Richard J. Mcclendon

Faculty Publications

As Mormon abridged the Nephite record he included what he deemed most relevant for latter-day Israel including stories of war. The so-called war chapters provide a rich resource of modern-day spiritual applications for teachers and students of the gospel (see Alma 43-62). One way to apply these chapters is to draw a parallel between the physical and the spiritual between Moroni's physical battles on the field and the spiritual battles that we face in our own lives today. To be more specific we might ask these questions: (1) What strategies did Captain Moroni use to prepare and protect himself and …

A Narrative Critical Approach To The Gospel Of Peter With A Focus On Its Christology, Roberto Bustamante Jul 2002

A Narrative Critical Approach To The Gospel Of Peter With A Focus On Its Christology, Roberto Bustamante

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

The interest of our work is the Christology of the apocryphal literature. However, the limits imposed by a seminar paper force us to narrow our focus rather strongly. We will attempt to define the Christology of a single apocryphal Gospel, by applying narrative criticism. We consider that the fact that the text came to us in a narrative form implies a particular way of uttering its Christology and asks for a treatment adequate to its literary form. There are both reasons and reservations with respect to this method's appropriateness.

Conversion, Conversation, And Acts 15, Lois E. Malcolm Jul 2002

Conversion, Conversation, And Acts 15, Lois E. Malcolm

Faculty Publications

Conversion and conversation converge in the light of trinitarian theology and in the book of Acts. The point of our moving beyond Jerusalem, of our outreach, is not to make others like ourselves, but to participate in an event that calls everyone involved out of themselves into something new and larger than themselves.

Corporeal Resurrection: The Pure Doctrine Restored Through The Prophet Joseph Smith, J. Peter Hansen Jun 2002

Corporeal Resurrection: The Pure Doctrine Restored Through The Prophet Joseph Smith, J. Peter Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

During Jesus' earthly ministry He taught the pure doctrine of corporeal resurrection to His disciples. Some of them became special witnesses to the literal bodily resurrection of Jesus after His death. Over time, men's philosophies perverted the true doctrine of the resurrection. Those teachings became the orthodoxy of the early Christian church and were handed down to modern Christianity. The pure doctrine of corporeal resurrection was weakened, and in some sects, was lost.

The Lord restored the gospel through Joseph Smith. Part of the Restoration qualified him as a special witness of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through him pure …

A Study Of Divine Spirituality, Simplicity, And Immutability In Petrus Van Mastricht's Doctrine Of God, Adriaan Cornelis Neele May 2002

A Study Of Divine Spirituality, Simplicity, And Immutability In Petrus Van Mastricht's Doctrine Of God, Adriaan Cornelis Neele

CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses

The problem stated is two fold: Post Reformation studies, and in particular those on the Nadere Reformatie have been deficient in appraising Petrus van Mastricht (1630- 1706) and his work, and the study of the divine attributes in context of the Dutch seventeenth century has been limited in general and restricted mainly to doctrinal reflections. Therefore, this thesis offers an introduction to the life and work of Petrus van Mastricht, and a descriptive analytical study of divine spirituality, simplicity, and immutability as found in the Theoreticopractica Theologia or Beschouwende en Praktikale Godgeleerdheit. The study of these attributes will be …

Manasseh In Scripture And Tradition: An Analysis Of Ancient Sources And The Development Of The Manasseh Tradition, Steven A. Graham May 2002

Manasseh In Scripture And Tradition: An Analysis Of Ancient Sources And The Development Of The Manasseh Tradition, Steven A. Graham

Seminary Masters Theses

This is an examination of the history of the interpretation of King Manasseh in 2 Kings 21:1-18; 2 Chronicles 33:1-20 and several related verses. This study is undertaken in order to answer three related questions. First, why are there two differing accounts of Manasseh - one painting him as the model of evil and the other as the model of repentance? Next, what is the Manasseh tradition, and how has it developed within the textual histories of both Jewish and Christian milieus? Finally, what is the discrepancy between the biblical presentations of Manasseh and his reputation according to tradition? The …

Mesopotamian Imagery And Influence In The Book Of Daniel, Eric Jensen Apr 2002

Mesopotamian Imagery And Influence In The Book Of Daniel, Eric Jensen

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

Sometimes neglected in the scholarly literature on the book of Daniel is the investigation into Mesopotamian parallels and influence linguistically, culturally, and literarily on its content and composition. However, some recently published articles are giving the subject of Daniel in its Near Eastern milieu the attention it deserves. This paper will examine two of these recent essays and one earlier work on the subject, and posit some original ideas on possible Mesopotamian influence particularly in regard to oneiromancy (dream interpretation) and animal imagery in the book of Daniel.
