The Holy Spirit In The Fourth Gospel From The Viewpoint Of Christ's Glorification, Robert Hoeferkamp Sep 1962

The Holy Spirit In The Fourth Gospel From The Viewpoint Of Christ's Glorification, Robert Hoeferkamp

Concordia Theological Monthly

Every student of the Bible knows the differences between the Synoptic Gospels on one hand and the Gospel of John on the other. It is the same Christ they portray. But the studied unity of conception, the composition, and the purpose of the Fourth Gospel catch the reader's attention as he turns to it from the Synoptic Gospels. It is the purpose of this paper to point our that one of the keys to the understanding of the Fourth Gospel is its major emphasis on the Holy Spirit. If we understand the nature, purpose, and function of the Holy Spirit …

The Lucan Prologue And Central Section - A Study Of Luke's Literary Method, James Ilten Jun 1962

The Lucan Prologue And Central Section - A Study Of Luke's Literary Method, James Ilten

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the contention of this writer that, although these various theological interpretations may offer a partial explanation to the enigma of Luke's "central section," they do not adequately account for the diversity or arrangement of material. It is the writer's thesis that Luke may have selected a part of his materials for the "central section" from a collection of pericopae used to train missionaries in the early Church. That such a written or oral tradition existed before St. Luke wrote his Gospel may be inferred from St. Paul's sermon at Antioch in Pisidia, "But God raised him from the …

Self-Examination- An Investigation Of I Corinthians 11:28, Norman Threinen Jun 1962

Self-Examination- An Investigation Of I Corinthians 11:28, Norman Threinen

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study is an attempt to investigate self-examination on the basis of Paul's statement in I Cor. 11:2e. Since the context of the passage is very important, Chapter II studies the immediate context of I Corinthians 11 and the wider context of the entire epistle. Paul's interest throughout the epistle is the concern that the Corinthians recognize Christ as the κúριος in their lives.

The Theological Background Of The Marcan Account Of The Baptism And Temptation Of Jesus, George Nickelsburg Jun 1962

The Theological Background Of The Marcan Account Of The Baptism And Temptation Of Jesus, George Nickelsburg

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the Old Testament and intertestamental background of the words and concepts appearing in Mark 1:1-13. Our study will show that almost every word and phrase in these verses is charged with a complex of theological associations stemming from the Old Testament and the Apocrypha and Pseudopigraha. We will attempt to show what these associations are, the different nuances given to them by the writers of the Old Testament and the intertestamental literature, and the varying ways which they were combined in these writings.

The Image Of God In The Theology Of Paul, Richard Taron Jun 1962

The Image Of God In The Theology Of Paul, Richard Taron

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This paper does not purport to resolve the question of the centuries with an air of final authority. Rather it is an attempt to delve once again into the New. Testament, in particular the letters of Paul, to find there what proceed with the search it will be necessary to investigate what different authors have said concerning various key passages, and to weigh, their statements on the scales of other Pauline, New Testament, and Old Testament evidence. Throughout we propose to adhere to the principle that Scripture interprets itself, so that one passage in Paul must be seen in the …

Conflict Of Religious Cultures: A Study In The Relevance Of Ugaritic Materials For The Early Faith Of Israel, Norman Habel Jun 1962

Conflict Of Religious Cultures: A Study In The Relevance Of Ugaritic Materials For The Early Faith Of Israel, Norman Habel

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

In brief the major thesis of the present work is that any interpretation of the pre-monarchic faith of Israel must take into consideration the conflict between the religious culture of Israel and that of its historical environment, and that the Ugaritic materials, in particular, are relevant for an understanding of the conflict between the religious cultures of Israel and Canaan, for an appreciation of the distinctive features of Israel's covenant faith and for a clarification of those areas where Canaanite religious influences are thought to be present in the biblical record.

The Biblical Teaching On The Eschatological Vision Of God, Robert Smith Jun 1962

The Biblical Teaching On The Eschatological Vision Of God, Robert Smith

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The paper will study and question the correctness of the widespread assumption that Greek thought is peculiarly related to seeing, while Hebrew thought is oriented towards hearing. It will be useful also to devote some attention to the question of the possible source or the New Testament idea.

A Comparison Of The Parables Of The Talents And The Pounds, Jack Kingsbury Jun 1962

A Comparison Of The Parables Of The Talents And The Pounds, Jack Kingsbury

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this paper is to present an exegetical study of the parables of the Talents and the Pounds in order to compare them in terms of their content, purpose, and character. The parable of the Talents is found in the Gospel according to St. Matthew (25:14-30), while the parable of the Pounds is recorded in the Gospel according to St. Luke (19:11-27).

The Foolishness Of Christ Crucified Viewed From The Point Of Incipient Gnosticism At Corinth, William Goerss May 1962

The Foolishness Of Christ Crucified Viewed From The Point Of Incipient Gnosticism At Corinth, William Goerss

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The thesis of this paper is that at Corinth Paul did take over some of the thought patterns and vocabulary of an incipient Gnosticism with Judaic overtones. But instead of being influenced theologically by the borrowed terms, he used them for his consistent preaching of the crucified Savior, the true Wisdom of God. He was well aware of the uniqueness of the religion he preached; its real source lay not in the current thought forms of either Judaism or Hellenism, but in the Person, 'Preaching and redemptive work of the crucified Son of God.

A Comparison Of The Ethics Of The Qumran Scrolls And The Epistle Of James, Warren Schmidt May 1962

A Comparison Of The Ethics Of The Qumran Scrolls And The Epistle Of James, Warren Schmidt

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

There are several reasons why one would expect to find similarities to the Scrolls in James. The latter is clearly a Palestinian document written for Jewish readers. It is probably the earliest of the New Testament books written during the formative years of the church. This is a time when the church would be more open to outside influences in matters such as organization and polity. The early dating of James has been accepted by many scholars since the study of Gerhard Kittel, who dates it in the fourth decade of the first century, immediately before Paul's first missionary journey.

Ezra And Nehemiah: A Review Of The Return And Reform, Martin W. Leesberg Feb 1962

Ezra And Nehemiah: A Review Of The Return And Reform, Martin W. Leesberg

Concordia Theological Monthly

The books of Ezra and Nehemiah present an account of the history of the Judean people from the time of the Exile until the transition to Judaism was well on its way. Cyrus, king of Persia, in his first regnal year issued a decree permitting the Judean exiles to return to Jerusalem (Ezra 1:1-4). Sheshbazzar, a Judean prince (Ezra 1:8), led the first group of returnees and rebuilt the altar. The temple was begun in the following year (Ezra 5:16), but opposition by the people of the land delayed the project for about fifteen years.
