Self Awareness Of Sin As The Cause Of Death In Four Of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales, Kathryn Louise Estep May 1982

Self Awareness Of Sin As The Cause Of Death In Four Of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales, Kathryn Louise Estep

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This study of four of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales presents a distinct view of a character's self awareness of sin and his refusal to seek repentance as being the cause of his death. The message here is that of the Fall. "The Great Carbuncle," "The Hollow of the Three Hills," "Lady Eleanore's Mantle," and "The Ambitious Guest" demonstrate that man is sinful and in need of redemption just as the Bible demonstrates man's fallen state and need for forgiveness through Christ, the second Adam. In these tales characters act out of selfish pride and become aware of their transgressions just …

Faith, Reason And Scripture In The Theology Of Donald G. Bloesch, David R. Coward Mar 1982

Faith, Reason And Scripture In The Theology Of Donald G. Bloesch, David R. Coward

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Donald G. Bloesch, an American theologian and seminary professor, is a leading spokesman for contemporary Protestant evangelicalism, a theological position that lies somewhere between fundamentalism and neo-orthodoxy. Heavily influenced by the German theologian, Karl Barth, Bloesch employs a methodology in which theology is based on revelation alone, unsupported by philosophy or the arguments of human reason. For Blosech, revelation is basically alien to human culture and human thought-forms. Because of this, revelation cannot be comprehended by reason, but only by faith. Bloesch’s view leads to a dichotomy between faith and reason, a dichotomy that ultimately lessons the impact of his …

Empty Willing: Contemplative Being-In-The-World In St. John Of The Cross And Dogen, Philip Novak Aug 1981

Empty Willing: Contemplative Being-In-The-World In St. John Of The Cross And Dogen, Philip Novak

Collected Faculty Scholarship

"If persons on different sides of the glove were independently to discover that bodies fall at the rate of sixteen feet per second squared, this would be taken as evidence that they had learned something about nature -- about the world and how it works. We see something like this at work in the sadhanas (spiritual paths) of St. John and Dogen. Though the Christian saint and the Zen master are leaves on quite different trees, similarities between then [sic], qua contemplatives, exist at a level profound enough to encourage the exploration of common ground. Ultimately this common ground invites …

"The World Creeps In": Hiram Bingham Iii And The Decline In Missionary Fervor, Char Miller Jan 1981

"The World Creeps In": Hiram Bingham Iii And The Decline In Missionary Fervor, Char Miller

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

To understand how and why Hiram Bingham III altered the course of his family's historical commitment to missionary service, one must recognize, as he later would, that the world in which he was raised was unlike that of his father, Hiram Bingham, Jr. The father had wanted his son to carry on in the family's service to God, but the roadblocks to the senior Bingham's desires to mold his son in his own image were numerous and interrelated: the family environment into which the child was born, the interaction of that nucleus with the larger community of Honolulu, and the …

Chinese Christianity Since 1949: Implications For The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Bruce J. M. Dean Jan 1981

Chinese Christianity Since 1949: Implications For The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Bruce J. M. Dean

Theses and Dissertations

In the last thirty years, Chinese Christianity has experienced severe persecution. Communism actively sought its subjugation. Despite this, Chinese Christians maintained their faith. When their church organizations became puppets of the state, Christians went underground and continued to worship in house churches. The recently li eralized political climate in China has allowed Christians to more openly practice their faith. The official Protestant and Catholic churches have been rehabilitated. House churches have come out of the closet. Capitalizing on an acute spiritual malaise in China, Christians are experiencing a major and sustained revival. There are ample opportunities for The Church of …

The Influence Of Traditional Practices In The Church Life Of Etche People, Emmanuel Amadi Nov 1979

The Influence Of Traditional Practices In The Church Life Of Etche People, Emmanuel Amadi

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

All through the ages, even before the advent of Christianity, the Ibos, in general, have treasured these practices because they served their cultural and social concerns. But no sooner was Christianity introduced into the various segments of our society than conflicts upon conflicts began to erupt. The Etche man, like his relatives the Ibos, is torn between two worlds. Christianity demands that he give up his past, while his culture insists that he stick to his heritage. The Etche man today asks how these conflicting thoughts can be reconciled. In this thesis, the writer shall attempt to describe these traditional …

The Making Of A Missionary: Hiram Bingham's Odyssey, Char Miller Jan 1979

The Making Of A Missionary: Hiram Bingham's Odyssey, Char Miller

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Throughout his twenty year tenure as minister of the mission church in Honolulu, Hiram Bingham earned hostile testimonials. Foreign residents and foreign visitors were virtually unanimous in their dislike for the meddlesome missionary. American visitors were appalled by Bingham's influence and actions: W.S. Ruschenberger, for instance, believed a "refined and elegant" missionary was more suitable than a "strong preacher." Similar sentiments were expressed by some of Bingham's colleagues. Asa Thurston complained that his co-worker was "too much disposed to take precedence of [me]"; later missionaries to Hawaii felt that Bingham assumed too much in the governance of the mission. Historians …

Political Disciple: The Relationship Between James A. Garfield And The Disciples Of Christ, Jerry Rushford Aug 1977

Political Disciple: The Relationship Between James A. Garfield And The Disciples Of Christ, Jerry Rushford

Churches of Christ Heritage Collection

James A. Garfield (1831-1881), the only preacher to ever occupy the White House, was a product of the profound social, intellectual and religious ferment of the early decades of the nineteenth century which produced the American religious movement known as the Disciples of Christ. The first fifty years of Disciple history closely paralleled Garfield’s life. The purpose of this study is to focus on the intimate Garfield-Disciples relationship, and to show its reciprocal nature. Garfield was helped by Disciples in the building of a political base (he won ten consecutive elections in the Western Reserve), and they in turn shared …
