A Royal Priesthood, 1 Pet. 2:9, W. Arndt Apr 1948

A Royal Priesthood, 1 Pet. 2:9, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

If it were not a fact with which we have been familiar since childhood days, we should be amazed to see that the Christian Church began its course without an official class of priests. The opening chapters of Acts, which report the founding of the Church, give the Apostles a prominent place in the early stages. These men served as pastors and teachers; at first the duties of almoners were incumbent on them, too. Hence the Church had leadership, but it did not have priests. The Apostles did not lay claim to such a status. In Jerusalem and Palestine in …

Foreword, W. Arndt Jan 1948

Foreword, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

This year, however, we shall take a different course; our approach to a study of some of the menacing evils will be indirect. The charge has been prominently made that liberalism has invaded the Missouri Synod. Whether the accusation is justified or not, we shall not now endeavor to determine; let each one settle the question with respect to himself before the forum of his conscience. Our intention is to look at liberalism itself, to clarify our views on that subject, and through such a discussion to furnish food for thought which will be of aid in our preparation for …

Evangelical Integration Of Color, Carl M. Zorn Jun 1947

Evangelical Integration Of Color, Carl M. Zorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

The status of the Negro in America is rapidly changing. Our Church's work among the colored people is no more a foreign work in the deep South. Soon many Negro churches, also of our Synod, will no longer be subsidized. The economic opportunities of the Negro are being increasingly protected by law and sentiment. The sociological trends of our times emphasize the elimination of ghettos. "Without distinction of race, creed, or color'' is one of the many American shibboleths. People with Negro features are filtering into every phase of our social structure.

An Evaluation Of The Nineteeth Century English Hymn Tune For American Lutheran Worship, Elmer N. Witt May 1947

An Evaluation Of The Nineteeth Century English Hymn Tune For American Lutheran Worship, Elmer N. Witt

Bachelor of Divinity

Lutheran hymnals continue to increase in size and in choice of hymn tunes. A brief study of The Lutheran Hymnal (1941) of the Missouri Synod shows that the composers of the 380 tunes of the hymnal come in the main from three countries: 18 from America, 59 from England, and 58 from Germany. This trend is borne out in the other Lutheran hymnals published in America during the first 40 years of this century, to perhaps an even more marked degree. If so many of these tunes are coming into the Lutheran Services from extra-Lutheran sources, we also do well …

An Outline Of Intergration Strategies For The Christian Principles In The Lutheran Secondary School, Karl John Schweder May 1947

An Outline Of Intergration Strategies For The Christian Principles In The Lutheran Secondary School, Karl John Schweder

Religion And The Adolescent Personality, Robert E. Meier May 1947

Religion And The Adolescent Personality, Robert E. Meier

Bachelor of Divinity

In an attempt to gain a clearer picture of adolescent personality, psychologists and psychoanalists, counselors and pastors have concerned themselves very much with this problem. Adolescence is a culmination of many things that have gone before, and its effects will continue in later life. Adolescence is not a life by itself, but a stage in a total life! Therefore, the events and happenings of adolescence cannot be cut off from the total life.

The Concepts Of Pistis And Elpis And, Agapee In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Karl L. Barth May 1947

The Concepts Of Pistis And Elpis And, Agapee In The Epistle To The Hebrews, Karl L. Barth

Bachelor of Divinity

We shall not attempt to solve the problem of authorship, nor, will the content and purpose of the epistle be treated beyond their relation to pistis, elpis, and agapee. Our problem is to determine: 1. what these words mean in the various passages in which they are used; 2. the role that these concepts play where they are present merely by implication. e. g., "tha abiding city" as part of the hope concept; 3. their relation to one another.

Conference Paper On Romans 4:5, H. J. Bouman May 1947

Conference Paper On Romans 4:5, H. J. Bouman

Concordia Theological Monthly

A very personal reason prompts the selection of my topic. In my senior year at the Seminary, I had not yet really learned what Christianity really is. To be sure, I was not a scoffer. Far from it. I yearned for the honor of being a Christian, but I did not dare. The sainted Dr. Bente had succeeded in crushing all my pride in human wisdom. In his lectures on the philosophical systems, ancient, medieval, and modern, he had shown us that human reason the moment it tried to explain transcendental problems disregards its own rules of logic in its …

Sacramentalism In The Roman Catholic Church, Jack H. Ruff May 1947

Sacramentalism In The Roman Catholic Church, Jack H. Ruff

Bachelor of Divinity

In view of the current wave of Romanist propaganda, the purpose of this paper is to re-examine the sacramental system of Rome in the light of the Scriptures and history. Objective examination will show that: a) The sacraments have become the shackl.es to bind men to the Church of Rome, b) The sacramentalism or the Romanists leads to doubt or carnal security, c) The papists' system is inadequate as shown by the very practice of the Catholic Church.

A Comparison Of The Christian Doctrine Of Sin With That Of The Three Religions Of China, Leroy Hass May 1947

A Comparison Of The Christian Doctrine Of Sin With That Of The Three Religions Of China, Leroy Hass

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose in writing this thesis, however, is not to produce a lengthy dissertation on the Christian concept of sin; this has been done by many excellent Christian theologians. In the next few pages we shall simply reproduce the teachings of Dr. Franz Pieper and Dr. J. T. Mueller on this subject. Hence, very few proof passages or proofs of any kind are offered. It is our desire merely to review the chief points of the Christian concept of sin in order to prepare the reader for a more intelligent consideration of the topic.

A Comparison Of Peter's Discourses In The Acts Of The Apostles With Peter's First Epistle, Willard Lewis Burce May 1947

A Comparison Of Peter's Discourses In The Acts Of The Apostles With Peter's First Epistle, Willard Lewis Burce

Bachelor of Divinity

In criticism of the authorship, genuineness, integrity, and historical accuracy of the book of Acts, the discourses and sayings of the apostles which are recorded in that book have come repeatedly under close scrutiny.

The Race Question In The Light Of The Una Sancta, Harry N. Huxhold May 1947

The Race Question In The Light Of The Una Sancta, Harry N. Huxhold

Bachelor of Divinity

Neither Scriptures nor the confessions of the Lutheran Church deal with the specific problems of racial minority groups, for the problem was absent at the time of their writing. But both indicate principles on the basis of which the question may be treated. Approaches to the problem on the basis of the various principles laid down in Scriptures and the Confessions may vary. But since the problem as it confronts the Church is most generally connected with the question of integrating racial minority groups in the local congregation, the following paper is a study of the race question and its …

An Historical Survey Of Liturgical Vestments For Clergy And Sanctuary With Final Reference To Good Lutheran Usage, Harry Krieger May 1947

An Historical Survey Of Liturgical Vestments For Clergy And Sanctuary With Final Reference To Good Lutheran Usage, Harry Krieger

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In other cases unfortunately, the Liturgical trend has produced no improvement, but quite the opposite. Individuals and groups have been swept along by it, to be sure, but have adopted much that is questionable, if not thoroughly repugnant, because they were impressed with the novelty of the thing adopted, or because it was supposed to be an improvement. As a case in point we mention the imprimatur which a large Lutheran body in America recently placed upon the wearing of a colored stole over an academic robe or so-called Genenva gown, in violation both of liturgical principles and historic practice. …

An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of Preaching For The Purpose Of Teaching Christian Doctrine, Martin Brauer May 1947

An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of Preaching For The Purpose Of Teaching Christian Doctrine, Martin Brauer

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis is "An Investigation of the Effectiveness of Preaching for the Purpose of Teaching Christian Doctrine." By Christian Doctrine we mean everything that the Bible tells us about God, His nature, His work and His attitude toward man, and everything that the Bible tells us about the origin, purpose, and destiny of man, his nature, and his relationship to God. Men and God are the great theme of Scripture. Everything that the Bible says can some way or another be fitted under this theme.

Natural Theology In David Hollaz, Jaroslav Pelikan Jr Apr 1947

Natural Theology In David Hollaz, Jaroslav Pelikan Jr

Concordia Theological Monthly

Christianity is a religion of supernatural revelation: to this "give all the Prophets witness." It is an assertion of the fact that the true meaning of God lies beyond the ken of the unaided human mind. Indeed, the Christian faith is so bold as to assert that "he that loveth not - and only a Christian is capable of ἀγάπη, true love - knoweth not God, for God is Love" (1 John 4:8).

The Practical Application Of Matthew 18:15-18, Walter H. Bouman Mar 1947

The Practical Application Of Matthew 18:15-18, Walter H. Bouman

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Lord Jesus Christ has wonderfully endowed His Church upon earth. To His Church, to the Christians, He has given the power to open and to close heaven, to bind and to loose sinners. And this is no empty gesture on the part of the Lord of the Church, for the Lord Jesus very specifically says: “Verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Matt.18:18. And just as our congregations in their constitutions provide that all things are to be …

Euthanasia, John H. Fritz Feb 1947

Euthanasia, John H. Fritz

Concordia Theological Monthly

The word euthanasia (eu, well; thanatos, death) was formerly used merely to speak of an easy, painless death. It is now being used in the sense of an intentional cutting short of life in the case of disease, or illness, that may be pronounced incurable and is at the same time very painful-mercy killing. There is little literature on this subject. Consulting a number of encyclopedias, I found that some of them do not consider the subject of sufficient importance and interest to be spoken of at all; even one of the recent encyclopedias does not mention it. And those …

Spiritual Care Of Patients In Army Hospitals, George W. Kautz Dec 1946

Spiritual Care Of Patients In Army Hospitals, George W. Kautz

Bachelor of Divinity

Our Lutheran Church of the Missouri Synod through its Army and Navy Commission has fully recognized the great task of providing a spiritual ministry to the men in the armed forces. Therefore many Lutheran clergyman at the beginning of the war offered themselves cheerfully to preach Christ Crucified to these men who were about to die and to minister to them under every condition. The Army Chaplaincy offered the great opportunity to serve Christ and to minister to many blood-bought souls.

Outline For A History Of The Old Testament Canon, Rudolph Gehle Dec 1946

Outline For A History Of The Old Testament Canon, Rudolph Gehle

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is one final question which is of importance in this study. The question is this: What Books Belong to the Canon, and How Are They Identified and Distinguished From All Others? This question will be discussed in three sections, namely: 1. The Canon of the Jews. 2. The Canon of Christ and the Apostles. 3. The Canon of the Christian Churches.

Dr. Walther's Foreword For Volume Xiv Of Lehre Und Wehre, 1888, C. F. Walther, Alex Wm. Guebert Jul 1946

Dr. Walther's Foreword For Volume Xiv Of Lehre Und Wehre, 1888, C. F. Walther, Alex Wm. Guebert

Concordia Theological Monthly

J. Conrad Dannhauer, the venerable theologian of Strassburg and teacher of Spener, wrote the following words a few years before his death in 1666: "Q. Curtius expressed himself correctly when he said: 'You cannot despise any point in an enemy with impunity; for in despising him you neglect him and so strengthen him.’ This very neglect in a former era gave birth to the Antichrist and, while people slept, enabled him to sow his injurious seeds. Because of indolence, weariness, or an eye that is not sufficiently trained, the same neglect fails to see the tricks of the syncretistic spirit …

The Greatest Missionary Problem, H. Nau Apr 1946

The Greatest Missionary Problem, H. Nau

Concordia Theological Monthly

The greatest missionary problem facing the Christian Church of the future is the world of Islam, the Moslem world. While the pagan world is comparatively well stocked with Christian missions and missionaries - comparatively well, we say, because we know only too well that in some parts of the pagan world the missionary occupation is but a skeleton one - the world of Islam has been touched only on its outskirts, its fringes.

The Interpretation Of Difficult Bible Passages, W. Arndt Mar 1946

The Interpretation Of Difficult Bible Passages, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

What a grand book we have in the Bible! While we are said to live in a new age since scientists 'have learned how to split the atom and there is preached to us the philosophy of collective action in national and international affairs in the · labor world and politics - a philosophy which is definitely in the saddle and riding fast and furiously-we Lutherans cling to the old Book. We say it comes from God and it leads to God.

Luther The Reformer, Th. Engelder Jan 1946

Luther The Reformer, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

Luther would say: I did not reform the Church. He said: "It was God's Word which, while I slept or made merry, accomplished this great thing." (XX: 20.) The gracious and almighty God accomplished this great thing. "What is now going on in the world is not my doing. It is not possible that a mere man should begin and carry forward such a movement. . . . Another man is at the wheel [Ein anderer Mann ist's, der das Raedlein treibt]."

Foreword, W. Arndt Jan 1946

Foreword, W. Arndt

Concordia Theological Monthly

God be praised! The firing has ceased, the unparalleled carnage is ended, the weary troops are returning home, the activities of peace are gradually resumed. Though in some countries the war continues, the United States no longer is involved. In His mercy the great Ruler of the Universe has once more called to the thundering billows of war, mountainous in their height, all-devastating in their fury: "Be still!" and the wild sea is growing quiet. All who will hear He bids in a different sense: "Be still!" adding, "and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the …

Some Remarks On The Question Of The Salvation Of The Heathen, Th. Engelder Dec 1945

Some Remarks On The Question Of The Salvation Of The Heathen, Th. Engelder

Concordia Theological Monthly

''In order to save universal grace before the forum of the human understanding, some have thought that the Gentiles will be saved for Christ's sake, without faith in the Gospel, on account of their moral aspirations (thus, for example, Hofmann). Others have assumed that after this life an opportunity to hear the Gospel and to believe will be offered (Martensen, Kliefoth, etc.). But these are human speculations, without any basis in Scripture" (Pieper, Christliche Dogmatik, II, p. 35). Millions of men have died who never in their life heard the Gospel of Christ, their Savior. Shall we say that they …
