Missouri Synod's Practice Of Fellowship With Non-Lutheran Christians, Albert Neibacher May 1966

Missouri Synod's Practice Of Fellowship With Non-Lutheran Christians, Albert Neibacher

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the purpose of this paper to investigate the implications of recent Missouri Synod statements on the church for the practice of fellowship with non-Lutheran Christians. In this connection, it should be pointed out that the term, "Missouri Synod statements, “does not refer only to the official pronouncements and resolutions of synod. The term is also used to denote books, printed essays, reports, and periodical articles written by various members of Missouri Synod.

Categories Of Lutheran Preaching In America And Their Communication Systems For Apprehending Revealed Truth, Harlan Wendler May 1966

Categories Of Lutheran Preaching In America And Their Communication Systems For Apprehending Revealed Truth, Harlan Wendler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

What is good Lutheran preaching? What are its components? The quest for successful proclamation of divinely revealed truth which enables men to apprehend it must be a humble prayer on the part of the preacher to God to make the ways of grace apprehensible. While the full answer to this quest will never be known this side of Judgment Day, some facets of the answer appear to have been given by God to His faithful heralds and need to be searched out. This paper is such a quest. It proposes to investigate, analyze and evaluate the relationship between the message, …

The Unity Of The Church And Her Worship, Walter E. Buszin Apr 1966

The Unity Of The Church And Her Worship, Walter E. Buszin

Concordia Theological Monthly

To possess a good understanding of the worship of the church one must possess as well an understanding of the doctrine of the church. Both, the church and her worship, are unique; each shares significant characteristics of the other. Both are creations of the Holy Spirit; both are spiritual in their very essence. The church can neither thrive nor exist without worship. Christian worship, on the other hand, is inconceivable without the church. The church is not only the locus operandi of all true Christian worship; it is also the agency of the Holy Spirit and as such prompts the …

Preaching And The Recovery Of The Church, Richard R. Caemmerer Mar 1966

Preaching And The Recovery Of The Church, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the first section, we dealt with the language of preaching. Can it be understood? Does God speak and act in it? In the second we dealt with the method of finding and conveying Biblical truth in preaching. Have current Biblical studies a contribution to make to the pastor as he sets about on his task of preparing and delivering sermons? The third article does not turn away from these questions and processes, but it locates them in their setting: the Christian church. Ours is a time of rediscovery of the meaning of the church.

The New Hermeneutic And Preaching, Richard R. Caemmerer Feb 1966

The New Hermeneutic And Preaching, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The first unit in this series discussed the implications for Christian preaching of current studies in the philosophy and theology of language, studies which are usually identified by some such term as linguistic analysis and connected with names like Ian Ramsey and Frederick Ferré As we now turn to the contemporary study of the Sacred Scriptures, we do not make a clean break with the preceding discussion. The Biblical studies reveal the dominant question: What is the language of faith? The purpose of this review, however, is not to analyze the field of Biblical studies in general but to assess …

The Relationship Between Dogmatics And Ethics In The Thought Of Elert, Barth, And Troeltsch, Edward H. Schroeder Dec 1965

The Relationship Between Dogmatics And Ethics In The Thought Of Elert, Barth, And Troeltsch, Edward H. Schroeder

Concordia Theological Monthly

A concern for dogmatics and a concern for ethics do not always go together. The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, for example, has always had a strong dogmatic tradition, but has in general been uninterested in what is commonly called ethics. But this is the opposite of the situation in many other American denominations. To put the problem into a broader perspective, what is the relationship between dogmatics and ethics? A helpful approach is to study the distinctive answers given by Werner Elert, Karl Barth, and Ernst Troeltsch, which prove to be distinctive not only because their personal theological convictions …

Theology And Moden Literature-Survey, Donald L. Deffner Nov 1965

Theology And Moden Literature-Survey, Donald L. Deffner

Concordia Theological Monthly

In Randall Stewart's American Literature and Christian Doctrine, the author unabashedly abandons "the so-highly-prized, the so-strenuously-inculcated academic neutrality" (p. viii) and pleads for a creatively critical evaluation of modern literature by Christian theologians. According to Stewart, the Christian critic must charge contemporary literature "to give an answer for the faith" that is in it. In the same spirit, John Killinger insists he must "ask hard questions of the creative arts… that the critic [the theologian] must judge, or it has nothing at all to say." (Sec John Killinger, The Failure of Theology in Modem Literature, pp. 15, 16)

The Ethics Of Nuclear Warfare, Martin H. Scharlemann Nov 1965

The Ethics Of Nuclear Warfare, Martin H. Scharlemann

Concordia Theological Monthly

At the beginning of this atomic age Einstein once remarked, "The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything except our ways of thinking. Thus, we are drifting toward a catastrophe beyond comparison. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if mankind is to survive." Fission, fusion, radar, television, automation, miniaturization, jets, rockets, satellites - all of these discoveries and inventions have come tumbling out toward us with such speed that we have not had the time fully to digest the significance of this rapid pace and to reflect on its consequences. During the few years of our …

Evolutionary Theology Of Pierre Teilhard De Chardin, His Critiics And A Personal Evaluation, Robert Letalien Nov 1965

Evolutionary Theology Of Pierre Teilhard De Chardin, His Critiics And A Personal Evaluation, Robert Letalien

Bachelor of Divinity

This paper will be an attempt to evaluate the lifegoal of Teilhard, namely, his reconciliation of the theory of evolution with the Christian faith. The emphasis will be placed upon his hopes for the future of man in the light of his philosophy. The future of man he labels as the “Omega point." To see how this point is reached it will be necessary to briefly describe how Teilhard views the evolutionary process from the inception of matter until the fulfillment of all things at the Omega point.

The Value Of Literature In Lutheran Catechetics, David Lange Jun 1965

The Value Of Literature In Lutheran Catechetics, David Lange

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this paper, then, is to investigate the nature, functions, and objectives of literature; to explore and delineate its congruencies with and contradictions of the nature, functions, and objectives of Lutheran catechetics; and finally to assess its value for the catechetical enterprise and determine whether it warrants the construction of a literature-oriented program of catechetics within The Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod.

St. Bernard Of Clairvaux And Martin Luther On Monasticism, James Pragman May 1965

St. Bernard Of Clairvaux And Martin Luther On Monasticism, James Pragman

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Actually, the study of the relationship between Luther and Bernard is an investigation into the Catholic Luther, a study of Luther's medieval theological heritage. Although Luther reformed the church and reoriented its theology, he retained an appreciation for those Christian theologians and churchmen who had preceded him and were transmitting to him the faith once delivered to the saints. In the investigation of one or more aspects of the relationship between Luther and Bernard, one confronts an interesting illustration of Luther's appreciation of the medieval Catholic tradition. The serious student of Luther must recognize that Luther basically approached the history …

Congregational Renewal Through Adult Education, Lester Nilson May 1965

Congregational Renewal Through Adult Education, Lester Nilson

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The problem expressed in the title of this thesis is not a new one. Ever since man rejected fellowship with God the need for renewal has been a concern of God's people. The exploration of the basis for and the possibility of such renewal among and within God's people has been studied in every generation, but the need for restatement and reevaluation will remain a necessary procedure as long as man lives in the world.

Mammon For Moravian Missions, William J. Danker Apr 1965

Mammon For Moravian Missions, William J. Danker

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Christian world mission has preached the Gospel and established churches. It has healed the sick and opened hospitals. It has taught those who sought education in the schools it conducted. But it has often shrunk back from structuring a forthright ministry to men's economic needs.

New Testament Teachings And 20th-Century Church Practice With Special Reference To Relations With Missions And Sister Churches, Carl A. Gaertner Apr 1965

New Testament Teachings And 20th-Century Church Practice With Special Reference To Relations With Missions And Sister Churches, Carl A. Gaertner

Concordia Theological Monthly

The church in the second half of the 20th century is caught up in the restless revolutionary forces sweeping over the face of the earth and inevitably is being shaken out of its complacency and self-satisfaction. In an age like this, everything is being sharply questioned and ruthlessly analyzed. This in itself is not bad. Under the blessing of God, much good should come to the church as a result of honest reevaluation, on the basis of God's Word, of the church's theology, its life in the world, and its mission.

The Church And The Lodge Problem, Theodore Nickel Mar 1965

The Church And The Lodge Problem, Theodore Nickel

Concordia Theological Monthly

In this age of ecumenicity and worldwide religious brotherhood, we may seem to be out of step in raising once again the question of whether a Christian may hold membership in what is sometimes called a lodge, or more technically, a fraternal organization. But we write this hoping only to serve the interests of God-pleasing ecumenical relations and Christian brotherhood. In this article we propose to cite instances from the teachings and ritual of the Masonic Order (Freemasonry) to show that commitment to this lodge and membership in the Christian church are not compatible. Many of the fundamental claims and …

New Thinking In Christian Education, Randolph Crump Miller Feb 1965

New Thinking In Christian Education, Randolph Crump Miller

Concordia Theological Monthly

From where I sit, I see many critical issues in Christian education. For as a professor at Yale, I see all the winds of the future that blow through our hallowed halls. As editor of Religious Education, I know what is going to be published in the next six months by Christians and Jews. As a director of Christian education in a local congregation, I am aware of what is actually going on among the faithful. This perspective governs much of what I shall say.

Editorial, Herbert T. Mayer Feb 1965

Editorial, Herbert T. Mayer

Concordia Theological Monthly

During recent years the Christian church has been living with a collective sense of guilt which has been sapping its spiritual vitality. Voices are raised in the church which assume full responsibility for the plight of modern man and which castigate the church because it has not been "relevant." The racial crisis, the rising rate of alcoholism, declining standards of public and private morality, deterioration of family life-for these and a thousand other problems the church has been urged to accept at least partial responsibility. The church has frequently forgotten to offer the message of God's forgiveness to itself. The …

The Mission Of The Churches To Higher Education, Wayne Saffen Jan 1965

The Mission Of The Churches To Higher Education, Wayne Saffen

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is perhaps significant that we consider the churches as having a mission to the university and college. This is an admission that on the secular campus the churches are outside looking in. They do not occupy the seat of power or even possess the persuasive ability to determine educational aims, philosophy, curriculum.

A Study Of Numinous Experience, Dama C. Cofield

Graduate Thesis Collection

For the past ten years I have worked in the area of Christian education in an ecumenical context. This has afforded me the privilege of participating in many communities of faith as well as the challenge of ministry and leadership in diverse situations. These responsibilities, involving me in the lives and personalities of fellow human beings and the necessity of personal growth to meet the demands of my own life's situations have forced me to examine repeatedly the premises of my own faith and its relevance to life.

Law And Gospel In Christian Education, Harry G. Coiner Nov 1964

Law And Gospel In Christian Education, Harry G. Coiner

Concordia Theological Monthly

When one attempts a discussion of Christian doctrine which involves Law and Gospel, the mind should think clearly and the pen should write carefully. Since the right distinction between these two doctrines is one important key to the proper understanding and teaching of the Scriptures, the attention of all who teach Christian doctrine is most earnestly invited.

The Process Of Americanization Excerpts From Moving Frontiers, Carl S. Meyer (Editor) Jul 1964

The Process Of Americanization Excerpts From Moving Frontiers, Carl S. Meyer (Editor)

Concordia Theological Monthly

In addition to a fervent zeal for home missions, the history of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, from the end of the Civil War to the end of World War I was marked by two dominant characteristics. The first was a vigorous theological conservatism which led it to resist any compromise in the historic Lutheran confessional position. The second. characteristic, shared with other ethnic groups, was a continued isolation, from American linguistic, economic, and. social pattens. These characteristics were intensified because the majority of the Synod's membership was rural. During the same period most of the other American churches were moving …

From Advent To Shrove Tuesday, Walter E. Buszin

Concordia Theological Monthly

Liturgical life and activity have not been at a standstill since the close of World War II. Already more than a decade ago more books on worship and liturgics were being published in English than in any other area of theological literature. It is likely that this is true also today. At present more courses in liturgics are being offered at theological schools of North America than ever before in American history; they continue to increase in quantity and quality from year to year. Services of worship conducted in American churches of our day reflect concern for decorum and order …

The Body Of Christ, Richard R. Caemmerer May 1964

The Body Of Christ, Richard R. Caemmerer

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Apology of the Augsburg Confession warns against two distortions in the meaning of the church. The one is that the church be viewed as an outward organization in which believers and hypocrites are mingled. In the days of the Reformation this distortion implied that the church was a political organization to which men adhered through the carrying out of rites and obligations. In our own time it may take the form of stress on extending and financing the church's business to the point of devaluating its other concerns. The other distortion is that the church is regarded as a …

Motivation In Paul's Epistles, M. H. Grumm Apr 1964

Motivation In Paul's Epistles, M. H. Grumm

Concordia Theological Monthly

There is no pastor worthy of the name who does not keep the perennial question of motivation at least simmering at the back of the stove. A problem not only of pastors but of teachers, parents, psychiatrists, salesmen, advertising men, and politicians is this: How do you move people? move them not only to do something but to want to do something? The pastor, of course, is concerned with more than a job by which he earns his bread and butter and with more than a specific job for a specific aim, for this office covers the whole range of …

The Social Worker And The Pastor As A Team, Ruth Wiederaenders Jan 1964

The Social Worker And The Pastor As A Team, Ruth Wiederaenders

Concordia Theological Monthly

In approaching the topic of the teamwork of a pastor and a social worker in meeting a particular need of a Christian, we must first treat the concept of teamwork to determine the possibilities of any action being performed. Webster defines teamwork as "joint action by a group of people, in which each person subordinates his individual interests and opinions to the unity and efficiency of the group; coordinated effort." The group or the team is specified as "a group of people working or playing together, especially as one side in a contest."

Christianity And Communism -An Ideological Comparison, Ralph L. Moellering Nov 1963

Christianity And Communism -An Ideological Comparison, Ralph L. Moellering

Concordia Theological Monthly

In his book Communism and Christ, Charles W. Lowry contends that we are living in a new religious age. As evidence he points to the post-World War II popular religious revival, to what he calls "a new priesthood" set up by psychiatry, to the influence of existential thought in philosophy and theology (consider Paul Tillich), and to the "collective neurosis" brought on by the crisis and anxieties of our hydrogen-missile age. "The final and conclusive proof that we have entered into a new religious era Lowry perceived in the expansion and menace of the "new universal salvation religion - Communism."

Luther's View Of Man In His Early German Writings, Heinz Bluhm Oct 1963

Luther's View Of Man In His Early German Writings, Heinz Bluhm

Concordia Theological Monthly

When Luther's first essay, Die Sieben puszpsalm, appeared in the spring of 1517, it met with instantaneous success. The reception accorded the German works of the next few years was similarly, even increasingly, enthusiastic. Martin Luther was, from his initial literary venture, easily the most widely read and influential writer in the German language in the second decade of the 16th century, from 1517 on to be exact if we ignore a brief but profound preface to his important first edition of the Theologia Germanica of the year before.
