Primary Reason: A Five-Week Training That Helps Crbc Members Identify The Resurrection Of Jesus As The Primary Reason Christianity Is True, Abraham Wright

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This research project addressed a perceived problem at Council Road Baptist Church. The problem was that many CRBC members are not equipped to defend their Christian beliefs. The author created a five-week training to equip CRBC members to be more confident in their faith by focusing on the evidence for Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. The author included small group discussions throughout the five-week training. The author also had each participant take a pre and post-survey to record the training results. The author had a systematic approach in the five-week training defending Jesus’ resurrection from the dead: God’s skeptics, God’s …

Revisiting Paradise Lost Through K-Pop: A Global Approach To Teaching Writing, Nayoung Bishoff Nov 2024

Revisiting Paradise Lost Through K-Pop: A Global Approach To Teaching Writing, Nayoung Bishoff

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

The short film series Wings (2016) by the Korean musical group BTS (Beyond the Scene) revisits John Milton’s Paradise Lost. BTS reinterprets Adam and Eve’s leaving of Eden as youths’ self-discovery process, overcoming a binary mindset. BTS emphasizes how experiences—trials, pains, and the struggle of youths to walk out of black-and-white perspectives—turn out to be “all so beautiful” as resources to grow. Wings demonstrates how the themes and elements in Paradise Lost can be used as a tool not only to explore Biblical concepts, but also to understand what pedagogical environments youths need to fully express themselves as writers. …

Why Are There 73 Books In The Bible Used By Roman Catholics?, Paul Griffioen Nov 2024

Why Are There 73 Books In The Bible Used By Roman Catholics?, Paul Griffioen

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

What collection of books make up the Bible? Roman Catholics say that there are 73. Protestants say that there are 66. Who is correct, and who decides? After all, the Bible was not written instantaneously as a complete package. There is a history to its formation as a collection of books. A variety of authors wrote these biblical books across multiple time periods. “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets” (Hebrews 1:1). Is the Bible just a man-made collection of books put together based on the personal preferences …

Finding The Sacred In The Profane: The Mardi Gras In Basile, Louisiana, Luc Guglielmi Nov 2024

Finding The Sacred In The Profane: The Mardi Gras In Basile, Louisiana, Luc Guglielmi

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

In Basile, a small community in Southwest Louisiana, there would not be any Mardi Gras without Ash Wednesday and vice-versa. Most of the people in Basile speak of Ash Wednesday when defining the Mardi Gras as there is a reciprocal spiritual relationship between Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday. The people from Basile, therefore, in giving equal spiritual value to these two feasts, assign a liturgical value to Mardi Gras because they need, and will admit this freely, to have a good Mardi Gras in order to enter into the sacred season of Lent.

Mardi Gras performs a function that is …

Human Sacrifice And Propaganda In Popular Media: More Than Morbid Curiosity, Jason Tatlock Nov 2024

Human Sacrifice And Propaganda In Popular Media: More Than Morbid Curiosity, Jason Tatlock

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

Representations of human sacrifice, whether based upon real or fictitious events, powerfully demonstrate societal norms and fascinations related to the acceptability of slaying humans for religious or national interests, particularly given the divisive and bloody nature of the topic. Readers of eye-witness accounts, newspaper reports, and historical narratives, and viewers of cinematic productions, war posters, and political cartoons come face to face with the beliefs and agendas of the creators of popular media. Such sources represent the slaying of victims in sacred rituals, as individuals attempt to demarcate societal boundaries along the etic/ emic spectrum, be they commentaries on their …

“This Cabal Guy Could Be Right”: Numeric Correlations In Maury Yeston’S In The Beginning, Leonard Vandegrift Nov 2024

“This Cabal Guy Could Be Right”: Numeric Correlations In Maury Yeston’S In The Beginning, Leonard Vandegrift

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

The study of gematria and isopsephy, the numeric conversion of Hebrew and Greek words, yields an abundant harvest of biblical insight. Though applying this method to more secular literature is rare, we have a unique set of circumstances in Maury Yeston’s musical In the Beginning that renders its use appropriate. Derived from Hebrew and Greek, the names of the show’s principal characters can be converted to numeric values, all of which share at least one of three common factors. Moreover, the names are often connected thematically, and their factors reflect key elements in the first five books of the Bible. …

Where Did The Time Go?: Against Aktionsart In The Exegesis Of The Greek Verb, Caleb Scott Alons Nov 2024

Where Did The Time Go?: Against Aktionsart In The Exegesis Of The Greek Verb, Caleb Scott Alons

Theology Undergraduate Work

This paper seeks to argue against the use of Aktionsart in the exegesis of the Greek verb. The four hotly debated components of the Greek verb in exegesis today are time, tense, aspect, and Aktionsart. The first section addresses necessary linguistic preliminaries concerning the literature on time, tense, and aspect from the perspective of biblical scholarship and from the camp of general linguistics. This discussion leads into the second section, which constructs a fourfold exegetical system (FES) consisting of four postulates that (a) explicitly define how significant linguistic terminology is used in the paper and (b) provide a testable method …

A Case Study Of Instructional Design Practices To Promote The Christian Faith And Worldview Within A Homeschool Education Program, Alexandria Mills

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This single case study explored instructional design (ID) practices to promote the integration of Christian faith and worldview within a homeschool education program, aiming to identify gaps in instructors' knowledge and skills and assess the applicability of the Four-Component Instructional Design (4C/ID) model. The study sought to determine where instructors may need additional support to integrate a Christian worldview into their teaching effectively and whether the 4C/ID model could help address these gaps. Although the 4C/ID model was not directly implemented in the observed setting, its potential as a structured framework for enhancing instructors' abilities was evaluated.

Data was collected …

Persecuted Or Protected: The Role Of Iranian Baha'is In The International Community, Nika Mazloom Nov 2024

Persecuted Or Protected: The Role Of Iranian Baha'is In The International Community, Nika Mazloom

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Religious persecution is, and always has been, rampant, and this is especially the case for the Baha’is in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Yet, little research has been done on how this persecution has led to improvements in protections for different religious minorities, including the Baha’i Faith. This thesis will aim to address that gap and understand whether and how the persecution of Iranian Baha’is advances protections for different religious minorities. In this research I attempt to locate instances of Baha’i persecution-informed religious protection through extensive research of the Baha’i International Community and interviews of religious persecution experts to understand …

Allusive Allusions, Daniel T. Hanson Nov 2024

Allusive Allusions, Daniel T. Hanson

Theology Undergraduate Work

This paper attempts to determine whether David or his editor in 1 Sam 24:11b–12a is alluding to the judge Jephtha in Judg 11:27, and if so, what implications this intertextual allusion would have on both diachronic and synchronic studies. To accomplish this goal, the author utilizes four of the criteria proposed by Richard B. Hays in Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul—namely, the criteria of verbal parallel, availability of source to the author (date), theme, and recurrence of author to the same section. The author examines the degree of verbal parallel in light of the hermeneutical structuring principle …
