“Exiles, Aliens, And Strangers”: Reading And Living In The Company Of The Global Church, Rachel L. Coleman Jan 2024

“Exiles, Aliens, And Strangers”: Reading And Living In The Company Of The Global Church, Rachel L. Coleman

The Asbury Journal

The use of “exile, alien, and stranger” language by New Testament writers in their descriptions of the church provides important insights into the appropriate self-understanding (identity) and the ultimate allegiance of Jesus’ followers. The lived experience of North Atlantic believers can make it hard to hear and internalize this apostolic language for the church; reading in the company of Majority World Christians can open up the possibility of deeper understanding and embodiment of these realities.

“Exiliados, Extranjeros Y Extraños”: Leyendo Y Viviendo En Compañía De La Iglesia Global, Rachel L. Coleman

The Asbury Journal

An Approach To The History Of Missions In The Church Of The Nazarene In Cuba, Mirelys Correoso Calzadilla Jan 2024

An Approach To The History Of Missions In The Church Of The Nazarene In Cuba, Mirelys Correoso Calzadilla

The Asbury Journal

The history of a church is impossible to tell if the chronicles of its missions are ignored. It is the latter that give it life and continuity. This article aims to present a brief historical review of the development of the missions in the Church of the Nazarene in Cuba. We begin with Miss Leona Gardner, a North American missionary, who arrived on the island in 1902. She preached the gospel in the area of Casilda, Trinidad, in the former province of Santi Espíritus, for 25 years. The merit lies in the fact that although she did not manage to …

The Groaning Of God: Jesus’ Sighs In Mark 7:34 And 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman Jan 2024

The Groaning Of God: Jesus’ Sighs In Mark 7:34 And 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman

The Asbury Journal

Mark’s use of sighing/groaning language ([ἀνα-]στενάζω) in 7:34 and 8:12, when set alongside the LXX and other NT use of the terms, provides a powerful glimpse of the mystery of the Incarnation, as the Son of Man groans in solidarity with humanity and creation and the Son of God groans in concert with the Father and the Spirit in the eschatological work of liberation, healing, and restoration.

El Gemir De Dios: Los Suspiros De Jesús En Marcos 7:34 Y 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman Jan 2024

El Gemir De Dios: Los Suspiros De Jesús En Marcos 7:34 Y 8:12, Rachel L. Coleman

The Asbury Journal

Strength In The Midst Of Loneliness: An Ecuadorian Christian Woman’S Experience Of Widowhood, Elis Damarys Carrión Flores, Christian Bermeo Valencia Jan 2024

Strength In The Midst Of Loneliness: An Ecuadorian Christian Woman’S Experience Of Widowhood, Elis Damarys Carrión Flores, Christian Bermeo Valencia

The Asbury Journal

In Ecuador, most cases of widowhood correspond to women, many of these believers. Although I cannot prove that this is certain in all cases, my experience has shown me that many widows feel alone and unprotected at some point in their life. This article reflects on the biblical affirmation that God is close to the afflicted and the weary to strengthen them (Ps. 34:18; 73:26), and focuses on the feeling of loneliness that accompanies widowhood, doing this in light of the Word of God and my own personal experience. The essay has four parts. In the first two, we contextualize …

Fortaleza En Medio De La Soledad. Experiencia De La Viudez De Una Mujer Cristiana Del Ecuador, Elis Damarys Carrión Flores, Christian Bermeo Valencia

The Asbury Journal

Santidad Y Misiones Pentecostales En El Salvador: El Ejemplo De Federico Ernesto Mebius, Robert A. Danielson Jan 2024

Santidad Y Misiones Pentecostales En El Salvador: El Ejemplo De Federico Ernesto Mebius, Robert A. Danielson

The Asbury Journal

Is There A Future For The Missiological Study Of Worldview? Part 1, Paulo C. Oliveira Jan 2024

Is There A Future For The Missiological Study Of Worldview? Part 1, Paulo C. Oliveira

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies

This two-part article aims to assess the missiological worldview theory critically while pointing to implications for mission studies. It argues that the concept needs serious development to be useful for research in contemporary society. The social shifts experienced in the last decades and a lack of robust missiological critical engagement have made the model theoretically unreliable as an analytical tool. This first paper introduces the genealogy of missiological worldview theory to expose its theoretical underpinnings and identifies a departure between anthropology and missiology regarding the concept. The first task in the ensuing discussion is to unearth the theoretical foundations of …

World Spirit And The Apotheosis Of Artificial Superintelligence: A Speculative Design Proposal, Ian Gonsher Jan 2024

World Spirit And The Apotheosis Of Artificial Superintelligence: A Speculative Design Proposal, Ian Gonsher

Scholarly Research

This essay puts forth a speculative design proposal for a device with affordances for talking to, and receiving responses from, God. We begin with an analysis and critique of the concept of God, framing this concept within an understanding of Hegelian Spirit (Geist) and technological evolution. In this context, Spirit, or World Spirit (Weltgeist), can be characterized as the aggregate consciousness of all people - as human consciousness itself: In the simplest terms, this immanent framing of the “mind of God” is culturally and socially constituted as the communication that people engage in with each other, in all the diverse …

A Resilient Faith: Lessons For The Church From Church Leavers, Carol Mclaughlin Jan 2024

A Resilient Faith: Lessons For The Church From Church Leavers, Carol Mclaughlin

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation began by seeking to understand why people leave church, particularly baby boomers that no longer attend church. Section One introduces the changing perceptions and dynamics of religious identification and church attendance practices. The question I ask and endeavor to respond to is how the church might live a resilient faith in the liminal space between a church-centric faith and faith apart from church affiliation. Section Two considers three responses to church leaving and perceptions of faith. The first considers the shift taking place in faith development when authority moves from the church to the individual. The second is …

Mixed Messages: Reflections On Multiethnic Identity And Narratives In Youth Ministry Pedagogy, Joel Mayward Jan 2024

Mixed Messages: Reflections On Multiethnic Identity And Narratives In Youth Ministry Pedagogy, Joel Mayward

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Drawing upon the work of Gloria E. Anzaldúa and Paul Ricoeur, this article presents a personal and scholarly reflection on the author’s multiethnic identity and how such identities may benefit youth ministry pedagogies and perspectives. The author explains Anzaldúa’s notion of nepantla alongside Ricoeur’s concepts of “narrative identity” and “social imaginary,” then demonstrates how these two thinkers’ perspectives can be interwoven and applied by educators and youth ministry practitioners. Ultimately, in sharing about his “mixed” heritage, the author contends that multiethnic individuals can serve as bridge-builders between cultures and generations.

C.S. Lewis On Female Scholars: A Reply To John D. Rateliff, Jason Lepojärvi Jan 2024

C.S. Lewis On Female Scholars: A Reply To John D. Rateliff, Jason Lepojärvi

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

In John D. Rateliff’s study ‘The Missing Women: J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lifelong Support for Women’s Higher Education’, Tolkien’s support of women is unfavourably contrasted with the supposedly dismissive attitude of C.S. Lewis. Rateliff offers three pieces of evidence in support of his argument that Lewis held a contemptuous attitude towards female research students in particular: a private letter by Lewis written in mock late-medieval English; Lewis’s comments about Damaris Tighe, the heroine in Charles Williams’s novel The Place of the Lion; and the character Jane Studdock in Lewis’s own novel That Hideous Strength. This paper argues that Rateliff’s evidence is not …

Review Of In This World Of Wonders: Memoirs Of A Life In Learning, Isaac Choi

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Over the last 50 years, Nicholas Wolterstorff has been one of the leaders of the renaissance in Christian philosophy, while also contributing significantly to reflection on Christian education. He has written several earlier autobiographical accounts, one focused on spiritual themes, “The Grace That Shaped My Life” (1993), and a speech to the American Philosophical Association on specifically philosophical aspects of his training and career, “A Life in Philosophy” (2007). At 17 and 14 pages respectively, the aforementioned publications were much briefer than this 334-page memoir. A third can be found in parts of his book Journey toward Justice (2013), where …
