How Long Shall We Tarry? A Reception History Of Tarrying For The Baptism In The Spirit In Early Pentecostal Testimonies, Daniel D. Isgrigg Jan 2019

How Long Shall We Tarry? A Reception History Of Tarrying For The Baptism In The Spirit In Early Pentecostal Testimonies, Daniel D. Isgrigg

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

This paper, presented at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Society for Pentecostal Studies, will investigate the methodology of tarrying for the baptism in the Holy Spirit as expressed in the testimonies recorded throughout the thirteen existing issues of the Apostolic Faith (1906-1908) of the Azusa Street Mission. In order to extract the “ordinary theology” expressed by this diverse cross-section of early Pentecostals, this study will engage in a history of reception of how Pentecostals received Jesus’ command to “tarry” and how that reception shaped the expectation of the early Pentecostals experience of receiving the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

From "Most Useful Book" To Scriptura Non Grata: Canon, Ecclesiastical Constrictiveness, And The Loss Of The Shepherd Of Hermas In Early Christianity, Robert Donald Heaton Jan 2019

From "Most Useful Book" To Scriptura Non Grata: Canon, Ecclesiastical Constrictiveness, And The Loss Of The Shepherd Of Hermas In Early Christianity, Robert Donald Heaton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With its roots in the first century CE and claims to special revelation from various apparitions, the Shepherd of Hermas portended an alternative Christian trajectory to the prevailing Christocentrism. But some in the second, third, and fourth centuries also deemed it compatible with the synoptic Johannine-Pauline metanarrative for Christianity, such that prominent bishops Victorinus, Eusebius, and Athanasius labored to depict it outside the scriptures of the New Testament. While their data and other early patristic writings presage the Shepherd's frequent appearance among scholarship on the biblical canon, this often manifests as little more than a curiosity, absent a proper …

Role Of Religion For Christian Couples Who Successfully Cope With Trauma, Bernadette Collins Jan 2019

Role Of Religion For Christian Couples Who Successfully Cope With Trauma, Bernadette Collins

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Most of the research concerning couples focuses on either couples and trauma or religion and couples. The current research investigated what role religion plays when Christian couples effectively navigated a trauma. Interviews were conducted with five Christian couples who experienced joint trauma more than eight years prior to the study. Interviews of the couples consisted of questions concerning what their trauma was, religious coping strategies utilized during and after their trauma, and the effect religious coping had on the couples’ ability to effectively navigate the traumatic event. Qualitative analysis found several major themes which included meaning making of the traumatic …

Comparing Phonemic Patterns In Book Of Mormon Personal Names With Fictional And Authentic Sources: An Exploratory Study, Brad Wilcox, Bruce L. Brown, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Sharon Black, Dennis L. Eggett Jan 2019

Comparing Phonemic Patterns In Book Of Mormon Personal Names With Fictional And Authentic Sources: An Exploratory Study, Brad Wilcox, Bruce L. Brown, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Sharon Black, Dennis L. Eggett

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In 2013 we published a study examining names from Solomon Spalding’s fictional manuscript, J. R. R. Tolkien’s fictional works, and nineteenth-century US census records. Results showed names created by authors of fiction followed phonemic patterns that differed from those of authentic names from a variety of cultural origins found in the US census. The current study used the same methodology to compare Book of Mormon names to the three name sources in the original study and found that Book of Mormon names seem to have more in common with the patterns found in authentic names than they do with those …

Welding Another Link In Wonder’S Chain: The Task Of Latter-Day Saint Intellectuals In The Church’S Third Century, Nathan B. Oman

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This is a challenging moment for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints. Both its efforts at retention and missionary work are less effective than they have been in the past. At this moment, what is the most important task facing Latter-day Saint intellectuals? In contrast to those who argue that faithful thinkers and writers should focus either on defending the faith or providing criticisms of the Church’s failings, this essay argues that the Latter-day Saint clerisy should focus on celebrating the Restoration and finding new language in which to express what makes the Restored Gospel of Jesus …

Mentorship And Mission In Profession: Inquiries, Perspectives And Recommendations // Наставничество И Миссия В Профессии: Перспективы, Исследования И Рекомендации, Alexander Negrov, Belov Alexey, Александр Негров, Белов Алексей

Russian Resources/Ресурсы на Русском

It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of such an integral part of professional life as mentoring. However, for the most part, a conceptual formulation and practice of mentoring is not commonly found in either the secular or Christian culture. This book presents an overview of the current situation surrounding professional and spiritual mentoring among evangelical Christians in Eurasia. It also presents results of the research project, “Mentoring and Mission in the Workplace Among Evangelical Christians,” which was carried out by Hodos Institute in 2017–18. The authors share insights based upon analysis of the research data and offer perspectives …

Defining Choices Redefined: Heroic Life Narratives Of Taiwanese Buddhist Monastics, Hillary Crane Jan 2019

Defining Choices Redefined: Heroic Life Narratives Of Taiwanese Buddhist Monastics, Hillary Crane

Faculty Publications

The Taiwanese Buddhist monastics in this study confront negative stereotypes that dominate within their wider societal context, and they challenge these stereotypes by positing counter-narratives. After exploring the monastics’ interest in proselytizing both to me and to a wider audience as a context that influences the interview encounter, this chapter focuses on the monastics’ response to negative stereotypes and their endeavors to craft a new, positive image of monastics. I argue that they employ the heroic trope of the da zhangfu (大丈夫, ‘great man’) to reconceive as heroic the life choices they have made that wider Taiwanese society characterizes as …

The Blind Arhat And The Old Baby: Liberation By Wisdom, The Dry-Insight Practitioner, And The Pairing Of Calm And Insight, David V. Fiordalis Jan 2019

The Blind Arhat And The Old Baby: Liberation By Wisdom, The Dry-Insight Practitioner, And The Pairing Of Calm And Insight, David V. Fiordalis

Faculty Publications

The distinction between “calm” (Pāli: samatha; Sanskrit: śamatha) and “insight” (P: vipassanā; Skt: vipaśyanā) is one of several ostensibly related dichotomies that have exerted a significant influence on classical and contemporary understandings of Buddhist practices, institutions, and history, as well as of the Buddhist path(s) to and conception(s) of awakening. However, scholars continue to debate whether Buddhists ever conceptualized two (or more) different paths or conceptions of this goal. Much of the debate has been based on the interpretation of doctrinal and theoretical materials. This essay takes as its starting point the concept of “liberation by …

“The Extent To Which Nations Are Affected By The Promotion Of Takfiri Jihadist Ideology Based On The Jurisprudential Division Of The World.”, Dr. Mahmoud Ismaeil Mohamed Mashal Jan 2019

“The Extent To Which Nations Are Affected By The Promotion Of Takfiri Jihadist Ideology Based On The Jurisprudential Division Of The World.”, Dr. Mahmoud Ismaeil Mohamed Mashal

Faculty Peer-Reviewed Papers | بحوث هيئة التدريس المحكمة

The issue of mutual atonement between the sects of Muslims is the key to evils, as it is the entrance to the permissibility of blood, money and honor, and for any country in which the disease of atonement spreads, the body of its unity will disappear, and the wall of its structure will crumble and collapse. However, the division of the world into (a home of Islam and a home of disbelief ) is a convention that jurists have modestly accepted in previous times, and it expresses the nature of the system that prevailed. This is nothing but a doctrinal …

Hermeneutics Of St John's Bible, Angela Mccarthy Jan 2019

Hermeneutics Of St John's Bible, Angela Mccarthy

Theology Conference Papers

The connection between art, theology and religious practice is ancient and rich. Within the traditions of Christianity there have been moments in time when major contributions have been made. The St John’s Bible is one such contribution. Formed in the Benedictine tradition, it is the first fully hand scribed, hand illuminated Bible in 500 years. The quality of the result of this major project is of immense value and the contribution to culture and history is of real import for the 21st Century. This paper explores volume six, Gospels and Acts, of the fine art Heritage Edition.

Curiously Unique: Joseph Smith As Author Of The Book Of Mormon, Brian C. Hales Jan 2019

Curiously Unique: Joseph Smith As Author Of The Book Of Mormon, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The advent of the computer and the internet allows Joseph Smith as the “author” of the Book of Mormon to be compared to other authors and their books in ways essentially impossible even a couple of decades ago. Six criteria can demonstrate the presence of similarity or distinctiveness among writers and their literary creations: author education and experience, the book’s size and complexity, and the composition process and timeline. By comparing these characteristics, this essay investigates potentially unique characteristics of Joseph Smith and the creation of the Book of Mormon.
