Fokus perhatian artikel ini terletak pada argumentasi mengapa diperlukan kepastian hukum atas produk halal di Indonesia. Uraian argumentasi di dalamnya menyangkut politik hukum pada tataran legislasi dan praksis yang dilakukan oleh Negara dalam konteks perlindungan konsumen di Indonesia. Dalam perspektif sub sistem (hukum) perlindungan konsumen di Indonesia, Pasal 8 ayat (1) huruf h Undangundang Nomor 8 Tahun 1999 tentang Perlindungan Konsumen (UUPK 1999) seyogyanya menjadi rujukan utama untuk menentukan substansi yang diatur Undang-undang Nomor 33 Tahun 2014 tentang Jaminan Produk Halal (UU JPH 2014). Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme have noted that, “we seem to be moving beyond any religious expression so far known to the human into a meta-religious age that seems to be a new comprehensive context for all religions.” That “new comprehensive context” is of course now known as Big History -- a.k.a. the Evolutionary Epic, Universe Story, or New Cosmic Story—the astonishing contemporary synthesis of modern sciences that tells a coherent story of the evolution of the universe from the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago to the present.

After September 11th, 2001, public criticism of religion took front and center stage in the United States like never before, epitomized by the works of Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens – the so-called “New Atheists”. In this thesis, I reunderstand the New Atheism as an oppositional social movement that promises important contributions to the recent trend in academic scholarship geared toward the study of religion and secularism. In its original version, this brief essay was delivered as a talk on the Northwestern College campus. The author reflects on Christian evangelical engagement in politics in “The Age of Trump”—as a believer, a political scientist, and a former candidate for state legislative office. Love, he argues—God’s love for us, and our love for God—is the key. As God’s love for each and all was made manifest in Christ on the cross, evangelicals should not lose sight of such love in engaging in public debate and policy-making. Ohio University Press Open Access Books

In recent years, anthropologists, historians, and others have been drawn to study the profuse and creative usages of digital media by religious movements. At the same time, scholars of Christian Africa have long been concerned with the history of textual culture, the politics of Bible translation, and the status of the vernacular in Christianity. Students of Islam in Africa have similarly examined politics of knowledge, the transmission of learning in written form, and the influence of new media. Until now, however, these arenas—Christianity and Islam, digital media and “old” media—have been studied separately.
