Not Quite Calvinist: Cyril Lucaris A Reconsideration Of His Life And Beliefs, Stephanie Falkowski

Cyril Lucaris is primarily remembered as an Eastern Orthodox patriarch who held Calvinist beliefs. A more nuanced view is gained from often ignored facets of his life and times, the extant letters he wrote, and in recognition of various possible interpretations of the existing evidence. This paper, challenging common misconceptions about Lucaris, explores three main areas relevant to this discussion: his biographical influences, his beliefs and their development, and his own intentions and self-understanding of his relationships with Protestants. During the fifth week we take a turn in our meditations, returning again to the cross from our thoughts on discipleship last week. Instead of the foolishness of the cross, we see the beloved Son of God on the cross. We are invited to consider its foreshadowing in the Old Testament. We note the seemingly stark contrast between the beginning of His ministry when he had been called "my beloved Son" by the Father, and this day of his death.

This thesis explores Irish author Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray in relation to a selection of texts by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. To demonstrate the similarities between Wilde and Nietzsche’s challenges to European morality, this work considers these themes, which are present in the ideologies of both Wilde and Nietzsche: the body and sensual pleasure, social construction, and the hypocrisy of altruism. Both radical thinkers castigate Platonic notions of the body as ignoble and weak, and they mock European propriety’s shyness of the body. Since the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948, the language of human rights has become a lingua franca among many jurists, philosophers, and theologians. But over the same period of time, the universalist aspirations of human rights language have also attracted myriad critics, both religious and secular. For these critics, the language of human rights isn’t sufficiently common to identify, discuss, and adjudicate moral and political issues. On March 13, Pope Francis will complete his first five years as head of the Roman Catholic Church. Since his election, Pope Francis has engaged the estimated 1.2 billion Catholics and innumerable non-Catholics worldwide with his frank, inclusive talk on issues as diverse as poverty and homosexuality. In fact, many observers seem confused by the church’s apparent willingness to reconsider traditions regarding some contentious issues, such as divorce.

A new exhibition of Spanish paintings by the Golden Age master Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664), “Jacob and His Twelve Sons: Paintings from Auckland Castle,” on view through April 22 at the Frick Collection in New York City, provides a refreshing reminder of this dynamic by bringing us into conversation with our religious ancestors, the Old Testament Patriarchs.

Vulnerability to risk of loss is present in any place where people assemble. the perspective of leadership on existing threats and their response to emerging vulnerabilities directly relates to the probability of exploitation. this article discusses a method that leaders can use to minimize vulnerabilities in their places of worship. Vulnerability governance can reduce risk loss through the use of measurable controls. a predictive posture, through the use of environmental scanning and a mitigation method, helps leaders understand emerging and residual risks in places of worship.

When Servant Leaders Appear Laissez-Faire: The Effect Of Social Identity Prototypes On Christian Leaders, Jeff Singfiel

Servant leadership is the most recognizable approach to leadership in Christian organizations. Understanding that their organization endorses servant leadership, or believing Christian leaders should be servants, Some Christian leaders choose to believe that they lead in this tradition, regardless of the perspective of their followers. These Christian leaders may earnestly believe themselves to be servant leaders but appear laissez-faire to their followers. In this study, the author reviews servant and laissez-faire leadership theories. He then proposes that social identity theory explains how leaders can be hijacked by social identity, which unconsciously influences them to self-identify as servants without manifesting the …

Purpose: Christian churches in American continue to struggle to maintain membership. This project is a combination research paper and contextual project that uses research gathered in the field to help evaluate the reality of what has taken place in membership and retention in this context. As such, this project aims to explore ministry practices that attract and retain church membership in Christian churches as perceived by active church leaders in the church.

He served in the South Pacific in the U.S. Army during World War II (achieving the rank of Captain) and attended Harvard University for his undergraduate education and for law school. Many colleges are reporting increased mental health concerns among students as well as issues of increased polarity and racial tension on their campuses. I believe these problems point to a spiritual disconnection as higher education aims have shifted in such a way that the spiritual needs of students have been neglected.

In this thesis, I propose an intervention that nurtures a student’s individual spiritual growth while developing leadership capacity for college student leaders in religious and spiritual life. This story circle model incorporates storytelling, active listening, and individual and group reflection as spiritual practices that promote faith and identity formation. …
