The relationship between European science and religion has varied considerably through time and among different traditions. This monograph attempts to catalogue one such variant by exploring the context entrance of European science into the Indian subcontinent, at the beginning of the British colonial period, by focusing on how a single religion leader drew upon European notions of science in building his reformed Vedic theology. Dayananda Saraswati (1824-83) spent much of his life traveling northern India as an itinerate ascetic and ultimately founded an intellectual lineage that was instrumental in the Indian Independence movement. The increase in massive open online course (MOOC) offerings in theological higher education presents unique equipping opportunities for local churches, providing high-quality instruction from authoritative scholars. The purpose of this project is to facilitate participation in a MOOC to equip members of Calvary Baptist Church, Lynchburg, Virginia, with basic hermeneutic principles in order to enrich personal Bible study and prepare for teaching the Bible. A pretest and posttest assess the effectiveness of the program to impart knowledge of hermeneutical concepts and skills. This Doctor of Ministry thesis presents the results of a project in which a group of four artists from across the United States met via video conference to create liturgical art activities that can be integrated into the Sunday morning worship for Churches of Christ. The problem identified at the beginning of the project was a lack of integration of the visual arts in worship in Churches of Christ. Luke describes Simeon as a faithful Jew who was “awaiting the consolation of Israel.” Many interpreters say that this description conveys Luke’s idea that there is a separate hope for the nation of Israel, which would be made manifest at some point in the future when the Messiah would bring about political deliverance for them. Most readers of this text will be aware of what has become known in media, popular culture, and scholarship as “the global refugee crisis.” This phrase is shorthand for what has basically become a long-term humanitarian disaster in which 22.5 million people have been forcibly displaced as refugees from their homelands, the highest number recorded since the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees began keeping statistics of refugee movements. Furthermore, there are currently 2.8 million asylum seekers and 40.3 million people who are internally displaced within the borders of their state of origin.1 The majority of refugees are from Syria, …

In sub-Saharan African religious worldview, a woman inhabits the interstitial space of connectedness. She serves as the medium for the birthing of physical and spiritual life. Today, many in the continent have embraced Christianity and many profess the Roman Catholic faith. African Catholics can contribute to the ongoing discourse on the role of women as ministerial agents in the Catholic Church. To do this, they can articulate a theology of ministry that is grounded in the religious worldview of African indigenous religions.

This essay examines The Chronicle, the Federated Colored Catholics’ official periodical. The author argues that the short-lived publication was an educative vehicle that provided practical strategies for addressing the day-to-day racial disparities facing the larger Black community. Remnants of the social and economic issues that The Chronicle’s founder, Thomas Wyatt Turner, sought to address during the late 1920s and early 1930s remain with us today, and as such, continue to demand both attention and solutions.

This paper provides an overview of three centuries of black Catholic faith, culture and activism in New Orleans. In particular, it looks at how Catholicism helped antebellum black New Orleanians to build and maintain family ties, how black Catholics as individuals and collectives used their material and spiritual resources to create a religious community, schools, and parishes, and how black Catholic New Orleanians used their faith in conjunction with their religious institutions to fight for social justice and civil rights from the era of Reconstruction through the 1960s.

Many Catholics experience catechetical challenges as they try to keep their faith growing in the midst of “new” truths, spiritual indifference and dwindling Mass attendance. This is especially true for Black Catholics who strive to balance racism in the world and racism in the Church. This article offers a pastoral response that uses story— telling and listening—for catechesis. Using My Story-Your Story as a method of storytelling, the article expounds on how story is the foundation of communication and how it can open catechetical endeavors for the 21st century. This thesis applies modern approaches to better examine a largely neglected nativist publication, The Menace. This thesis also challenges the importance scholars have placed on formal associations, including prominent nativist groups such as the Klan. Instead, this thesis will focus on The Menace, a print publication that was mainstream with respect to its popularity as well as in the way it was produced. At the same time, The Menace was also similar to other nativist groups in the way it viewed race, gender, and religion.

Beginning with a discussion about the meaning of compassion and its Judaic and Christian foundations, this article provides an understanding of how compassion builds and sustains community. It includes a model of the compassion process, a discussion of the barriers that prevent compassion from being expressed more freely, and examples about where compassion may need greater expression in our world

“To Defend The Citadel Of Its Faith From All Assaults": Hermann Adler And The London Society For Promoting Christianity Amongst The Jews, Robert H. Ellison

This article employs sermons as a lens through which to examine Jewish-Christian relations in Victorian England. It focuses primarily upon discourses preached by clergy affiliated with the London Society for Promoting Christianity Amongst the Jews, and on rebuttals delivered by Hermann Adler, a London rabbi who would go on to become Chief Rabbi of the British Empire. Attention is also given to reviews of Adler's work, and to responses to those reviews. These reviews and reviews-of-reviews are evidence that there was an active conversation taking place in the pulpit and the press; the article seeks to show that preaching is …
