Online education is becoming more common in higher education, and the number of students taking online courses is projected to increase dramatically. Despite the popularity of online education, there is scarce research on the psychological well-being for those online learners as they work toward their academic goals. To address this gap, the current study examined the effects of music listening on online learners’ mood, perceived self-efficacy, mental exertion, and task performance (N = 42). This study specifically focused on an online college education setting and examined the role of music listening and affect within this emotionally-dynamic context. Data analysis …

The Number Of Credit Hours Required For Bachelor’S Degrees At Christian Colleges And Universities, Andrew Sid Lang, Enrique F. Valderrama, Clare Ruth Holt

Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning for Christians in Higher Education

Trends in the minimum number of credit hours required to complete a bachelor’s degree have been studied at four-year public institutions and appear to have been moving steadily towards a 120-hour standard for the majority of programs. The existence of such trends at Christian institutions have not previously been investigated nor has credit hour data been collected and made publicly available. If Christian institutions are not moving towards 120 hours, as state schools are, it could signal an emerging dichotomy in higher education requirements. In the decades before the Civil War which began in 1861, the Second Great Awakening was the most powerful social movement in America. It inspired the conversion of millions of Americans to faith in Jesus Christ. And that faith motivated many of those people to attempt to transform the moral habits of the nation. Slavery was ended, consumption of alcohol reduced, women’s rights, though often opposed by people of faith, were set on a path that would result in woman’s suffrage in the early Twentieth century. Impact Evaluation Under The Banner Of The Cross: An Integrated Approach To The Evaluation Of Poverty Alleviation Programs, Stephen M. Pitts

This thesis proposes normative criteria of individual and social welfare to evaluate poverty alleviation programs. Since World War II, both governments and NGOs have implemented a variety of development projects to address the poverty of individuals and groups around the world. The emerging field of impact evaluation applies a methodology borrowed from clinical drug trials to measure the effect of these projects on the populations that they serve. Sixty years of the history of development reveal that despite the sophistication of the statistical techniques, the field cannot offer basic guidance on what outcomes to measure.

Aware of the need to address the existing challenges of the religious women of southwest China, I find inspiration and guidance in the Book of Ruth. This thesis suggests that the main challenge to women‘s religious life in southwest China is the lack of foundational religious formation and a vital spirituality of religious life. It argues that the character of Ruth embodies the spiritual principles of solidarity, initiative, and integration, and can therefore provide the religious women of southwest China with a model of holistic spirituality which fosters a formational renewal of spiritual and communal life and confirms religious identity. …

This thesis surveys the history of Christian mission work in China from the (legendary) mission of the Apostle Thomas up to the present day, including the upheavals resulting from the Communist Revolution.
