Homiletical Aesthetics: A Paradigmatic Proposal For A Holistic Experience Of Preaching, Sunggu Yang
Homiletical Aesthetics: A Paradigmatic Proposal For A Holistic Experience Of Preaching, Sunggu Yang
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The article is a proposal for a paradigmatic change in homiletical pedagogy. In North America today, most homiletical training at the seminary or divinity school is either text-driven or know-how-driven (or, at times, topic-driven). Thus, the homiletical training focuses on (1) how to exposit a text for a key topic, (2) how to structure a sermon, (3) how to deliver a message, and (4) how to analyze the text-driven sermon. While admitting the usefulness of this current textual or know-how pedagogy, the article suggests the addition of a holistic-aesthetic component of preaching, which I will later call numen-participatory education or …

Explaining The Rise Of Isis, Anas Alqaed
Political Science Theses and Capstones
In this paper I study the circumstances that led to the rise the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS/Daesh) and its economic power. I use articles, testimonies before US House of Representatives and analyze economic data to generate facts and draw conclusions. All references rely on primary source documents that were not released in an official capacity by ISIS. These are documents that have been released online by pro or anti-ISIS activists or information that was gathered and analyzed by research centers and international organizations. It is worth noting that non-officially released documents were very helpful in shedding more …
Sacramental Theology Of Elochukwu Uzukwu In Light Of Vatican Ii And Its Application In African Contexts, Emmanuel Osigwe
Sacramental Theology Of Elochukwu Uzukwu In Light Of Vatican Ii And Its Application In African Contexts, Emmanuel Osigwe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recognition of the indispensable intersection of faith and culture has become a major trend in the contemporary theology. This renewed approach emphasizes various anthropologies and cultures as locations of divine activity. Specifically, the Second Vatican Council’s understanding of sacraments as pneumatological, and ecclesiological, beyond the dominant Christological motif, and its call for profound adaptation gives a wide latitude for rethinking the sacraments. This provision overcomes the danger of enforcing a monocultural model of sacramental celebration, which can submerge local voices and separate sacramentality from symbols and values that resonate differently with various peoples and cultures. This dissertation shows how Elochukwu …
Scriptures' Indexical Touch, James Watts
Scriptures' Indexical Touch, James Watts
Religion - All Scholarship
Touching and holding books does not usually evoke the language of sensation. Touching a book indexes the reader in relationship to the book. Holding a book of scripture indexes a person as faithful to the beliefs and practices that are commonly associated with that scripture. In portraiture, the direction of a book’s indexical function is usually clear. Scribes, professors, lawyers and politicians pose in their libraries, often with book in hand, to depict themselves as scholars. The fact that scriptures are books makes a vocabulary of textual agency available for describing their symbolic function. The indexical link between book and …

Design-Based Research Mobile Gaming For Learning Jewish History, Tikkun Olam, And Civics, Owen Gottlieb

How can Design-Based Research (DBR) be used in the study of video games, religious literacy, and learning? DBR uses a variety of pragmatically selected mixed methods approaches to design learning interventions. Researchers, working with educators and learners, design and co-design learning artifacts and environments. They analyze those artifacts and environments as they are used by educators and learners, and then iterate based on mixed methods data analysis. DBR is suited for any "rich contextualized setting in which people have agency." (Hoadley 2013) such as formal or informal learning environments.

3 Formational Practices For Difficult Conversations Every Church Can Learn, Marykate Morse
3 Formational Practices For Difficult Conversations Every Church Can Learn, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Dr. Raleigh Washington, the president and CEO of Promise Keepers and spokesperson for racial reconciliation, often would pepper his talks with the catch phrase “not for guilt, just for understanding.”
He was asking for a deeper listen than our normal tendency to close our minds and react when we hear something challenging or contrary to our thinking. He used this phrase often as he was having a difficult conversation with his audience about race.
Such conversations are often like walking through a minefield. Dr. Washington was inviting his audience to listen—without blowing up his character, intent, or facts before he …

4 Ways Churches Can Respond Faithfully To #Metoo, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
On October 15, 2017, actress Alyssa Milano tweeted, “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet.”
Twitter and Facebook exploded with responses. She tweeted in hopes that persons would grasp ‘the magnitude of the problem’ after the unfolding revelation of Harvey Weinstein’s predatory behavior towards women.
Within 24 hours, there were 12 million Facebook posts and over a million tweets with the ‘MeToo’ hashtag. The numbers continue to grow. I’m sure every person online in North America knows someone who posted ‘MeToo.’
A couple days later, I posted #MeToo on my Facebook …

A White Response To Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon To White America, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Michael Eric Dyson, an ordained minister for 35 years, a Professor of Sociology at Georgetown University, and a writer for several prestigious magazines including The New York Times, wrote the book Tears We Cannot Stop: A Sermon to White America [St. Martins Press, 2017]. This is a book every white Christian should read especially now in light of the events in Charlottesville and the ongoing racial tensions in our America. The first step towards being a redemptive presence in our communities is to truly enter into the lived experience and the actual perspective of our African American brothers and sisters. …
Christian Leadership And The ‘Trump Effect’, Marykate Morse
Christian Leadership And The ‘Trump Effect’, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Today I see a widening chasm between our vision of Christian leadership and the reality of those whom we support. What we expect from our local leaders is increasingly different from what we expect of persons in the highest government offices, even the presidency. The 81% of white evangelicals who voted for Donald Trump and who continue to support him are proof of this.
What shocked me is not that he is president, but that ethical behavior, holy character, love, and service to the least of these didn’t matter so much to 8 out of 10 of us. These are …

Two Converging Paths: Celebration And Lament – An #Awakenings17 Reflection, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
On April 27-29, I attended the Awakenings conference at the historic Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, along with facilitating a pre-conference Consultation. On that first day of the Consultation and throughout the conference, I became aware of two parades marching in me: a parade of inspiration and hope and a parade of shock and lament. These parades kept bumping into each other.
The Hospitality Of Words: Three Tips For Better Gender Relationships, Marykate Morse
The Hospitality Of Words: Three Tips For Better Gender Relationships, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
When we think of hospitality, we usually think of sharing food, but our words to one another can also be a form of hospitality.
When food is shared, we sit around a table, give people our best from the kitchen and invite conversation. Guests feel welcomed when the host is warm, attentive to their comfort, and is more interested in learning about them than about expounding on his or her own life and ideas. Host and guests become friends when the guests experience a warm connection and feel the dignity of being cared for graciously.
Words are like food. The …

All Books
The purpose of this project is simple. In writing these essays each author wishes to offer a tangible expression of appreciation and gratitude to those professors who have invested their time in teaching them the value of studying Scripture. Each one of the professors represented has greatly influenced the authors’ understanding of the Biblical text, and for this they are forever indebted to them. This festschrift recognizes the scholarship of the following professors: Drs. Richard M. Davidson, Jiří Moskala, Roy Gane, Ranko Stefanović, Paul Gregor, and Thomas Shepherd.

Migliore Collection
The purpose of this book is to help people develop a long term, biblically-based strategic plan for their lives. My hope is to stir a vision or dream and then to provide a means by which that dream may be achieved. The theme is to prayerfully seek the Lord's will for our lives.

Problem
The leaders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the North Union, in particular, in the West Central Peru Mission, have planned a series of activities to be conducted among Small Groups and also at the church level as part of the strategy of Communion, Relationship and Mission (CRM in Spanish). Nevertheless, it is not known the degree of influence of activities such as Bible reading, prayer, witnessing and a relationship with God in the level of fidelity towards the church among members of small groups that will increase their permanence in the church. Therefore, there was a need to …

Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
"One of the original purposes of this journal was to provide a forum for missionary and cross-cultural research and to help build a body of literature dealing with Adventist mission theory and practice. Therefore, this issue is focused on mission research with the hope that as readers around the world read the articles that illustrate the many ways of doing missiological research that they will also be encouraged to conduct research and write for future issues of the journal." [Excerpted from Editorial]
On Epistemology Of Missiological Research, Petr Činčala
On Epistemology Of Missiological Research, Petr Činčala
Journal of Adventist Mission Studies
"In this article I addressed the nature of missiology and missiological research. Missiology is like a dynamic river that can “flow” with any academic discipline examining human behavior “to expand missiological theory and applications and to extend the mission Dei” (Elliston 2011:112). Theological research as a stand-alone research method may or may not serve missiological purposes; however, missiology and theology are related disciplines. This same rational does not apply to the social sciences and missiology. Missiology can benefit enormously from a social science approach to research but may be paralyzed by utilizing social science research as a whole package."
