Assyriology At The Liberal Arts College: A Report From The Field, Alan Lenzi
Assyriology At The Liberal Arts College: A Report From The Field, Alan Lenzi
College of the Pacific Faculty Presentations
There is an ideal in American Assyriology that active scholars will work at a research university, where they will teach Akkadian and/or Sumerian and lead philological seminars on selected texts from their sub-specialty. Although such an Assyriologist may teach an undergraduate course or two each year, their most important pedagogical efforts will be directed at graduate students. The reality of the academic job market makes this career path available to relatively few scholars. Those who remain in academia often find employment teaching undergraduates in a department of history, religious studies, art history, or comparative literature. The present paper shares my …

The First Great Awakening: Revival And The Birth Of A Nation, Kory Ray Thomas Quirion
The First Great Awakening: Revival And The Birth Of A Nation, Kory Ray Thomas Quirion
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
The First Great Awakening left an indelible mark on the development of America. With roots stretching back to the Christian Reformation of the 1500’s, the Great Awakening swept the young colonies with the fires of evangelical fervor. The revival shook the very foundations of colonial society. Following in its wake was a rebirth of reformed philosophy and theology that planted the seeds of self-government and political autonomy in the fertile soil of the Americas. By 1776, that seed had blossomed into a vibrant revolutionary movement that questioned the very fabric of Old World society. This article explores the rich Christian …

The Formative Years Of An Iconoclastic Salafi Scholar, Emad Hamdeh
The Formative Years Of An Iconoclastic Salafi Scholar, Emad Hamdeh
Publications
Despite his great influence on modern Salafism and Islamic studies, relatively few works focus on the life of Muḥammad Nāṣir al-Dīn al-Albānī (d. 1999), a scholar whose life and brand of Salafism are marked by controversy and stand in stark contrast to madhhab Traditionalism. This article provides a translation of one of his autobiographical interviews. I shed light on the biographical details of Albānī’s formative years, namely his sour relationship with his father, quarrels with the Albanian community in Syria, and his controversial professorship at the University of Medina. Among the arguments I make is that Albānī created an image …

Aisha, Aisha, Tsos
Aisha, Aisha, Tsos
TSOS Interview Gallery
Aisha, a Syrian native, lived in Latakia with her Palestinian husband and six children. Their children were not allowed to attend school because of their Palestinian heritage. During the war, mortars and missiles hit the city, and Aisha's brother lost three children. Aisha's uncle in Jordan helped to smuggle their family into Turkey after they decided to escape.
They sailed to Greece with a boat carrying about 350 people. The ship's drivers abandoned it during the journey. To save the children on board, Aisha's husband steered the sinking ship. Her husband was arrested in Greece, and Aisha, who was five …
Transcendental Souls Sextet, Anthony Elia
Transcendental Souls Sextet, Anthony Elia
Bridwell Library Research
The Transcendental Souls Sextet is a wandering through the spiritual realm, where the sounds of each instrument are meant to embody the migratory nature of the soul (as reflected in different kinds of mysticism), searching and experiencing the world and that which may be beyond. It is meant to convey a sense of both restlessness and the experience of contentedness set in tension with one another. To be played at a somewhat faster pace, but not too fast, as well as with power and conviction. App. 12:42 (no repeats) or 14:35 (with repeats).
