Recurring Characters As Benefits In Applying God’S Word, Daniel Hahn
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Hahn Jr., Daniel A., Recurring Characters as Benefits in Applying God’s Word. D.Min. MAP., Concordia Seminary, 2016. 166pp.
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of recurring characters in sermon stories as tools for connecting hearers to Biblical concepts. The report tells the story of a six-week series of sermons which were developed for St. John’s Lutheran Church in Millvale, Pennsylvania. The project aimed to determine if the two contemporary characters, created for this series, would become increasingly beneficial over time as hearers became more familiar with them. The report explains the rationale behind the project and …

Advancing The Cause Of The Gospel Pastoral Blogging By Luther’S Heirs, Robert Stroud
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
Stroud, Robert C. “Advancing the Cause of the Gospel: Pastoral Blogging by Luther’s Heirs.” D.Min. diss., Concordia Seminary—St. Louis, [2016]. [353] pp.
The purpose of this study was to explore whether provision of a digital Handbook for Pastoral Blogging would be of value to pastors who had never before blogged. A draft Handbook was provided to thirteen LCMS clergy from across the United States who were serving in parish ministries. They proceeded to begin blogs and maintain them over a period of three months.
Data was collected from the participants at three points. The first was an online survey prior …
Freedom And The Incarnation, Timothy Pawl, Kevin Timpe
Freedom And The Incarnation, Timothy Pawl, Kevin Timpe
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
In this paper, we explore how free will should be understood within the Christian doctrine of the Incarnation, particularly on the assumption of traditional Christology. We focus on two issues: (i) reconciling Christ's free will with the claim that Christ's human will was subjected to the divine will in the Incarnation; and (ii) reconciling the claims that Christ was fully human and free with the belief that Christ, since God, could not sin.

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
There are many discipleship programs in Korean churches; however, the programs have not had positive effects on young adult for the purpose of developing disciple makers. Discipleship for young adult requires many elements in the process including God’s word, fellowship, training in Christian habits, and spiritual maturity. The purpose of the thesis is to examine Jesus’ and the Apostles’ discipleship processes and to suggest a strategy for making young adult multiply in Korean churches, focusing on God’s words as a discipleship making process. This study will explore discipleship processes of the New Testament and discuss how God’s Word has an …

Socratizing Paul: The Portrait Of Paul In Acts, Rubén R. Dupertuis
Socratizing Paul: The Portrait Of Paul In Acts, Rubén R. Dupertuis
Religion Faculty Research
The Acts of the Apostles is poorly named because it is primarily the acts of only two apostles: Peter and Paul (and Paul is not actually considered to be an "apostle" by Luke, the author of Acts). Furthermore, it is Paul who emerges as the hero of the narrative, as well over half of Acts is devoted to his journeys and exploits. The portrait of Paul in Acts is striking for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that letter writing, the activity for which Paul appears to have been known, is completely absent. In Acts Paul …

Ann Austin, Jeannine Graham
Ann Austin, Jeannine Graham
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The story of the Quaker Ann Austin is a story of resilience and resolve despite unremitting opposition. Mid-seventeenth-century colonial America was a paradox of settlers who braved perilous seas to escape persecution and find religious freedom in the colonies. Yet some of those same groups ironically became inhospitable, even hostile, to other immigrants seeking similar freedom to practice and promote their religious beliefs. Ann Austin, mother of five children and described as a woman "stricken in years:' traveled with fellow Quaker Mary Fisher, an unmarried former maidservant, to the colonies by way of Barbados aboard the ship Swallow. Fueled with …
Religious Liberty In The Early American Republic, Steven Samson
Religious Liberty In The Early American Republic, Steven Samson
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The early nineteenth century in America was a period in which the idea of religious liberty came to be worked out in practice in a setting of growing diversity. The immediate effect of the dissolution of state religious establishments was to strengthen the vitality and prestige of the churches themselves. Before the end of the century, the church historian Philip Schaff could regard as normal 'a free church in a free state, or a self-supporting and self-governing Christianity in independent but friendly relation to the civil government.'
Pathway: A Gateway To Global Church Education, Benjamin Charles Peterson
Pathway: A Gateway To Global Church Education, Benjamin Charles Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Education and learning have ever been at the core of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Throughout its history that now extends nearly one hundred ninety years, the Church has made numerous attempts to provide educational opportunities for its members. Some attempts have failed, and others were met with some success—though limited, to be sure. In hindsight, most of these efforts were simply laying the foundation for something far greater. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the groundwork for global Church education had been laid, and the seeds planted. Beginning with a pilot administered through BYU-Idaho, a …

Discipleship Counseling: Developing Healthy, Growing, Multiplying Followers Of Jesus, James Albritton
Discipleship Counseling: Developing Healthy, Growing, Multiplying Followers Of Jesus, James Albritton
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This project will look at how professional or lay counseling can increase the effectiveness of making and maturing followers of Jesus. An effective strategy for disciple-making that targets the whole person will be established to help followers of Jesus overcome the emotional pain due to past sin and hurts which have left them ineffective and stagnant in their growth as disciples. Research will be conducted through articles, websites, and books dealing with the subject as well as a survey of at least 50 pastors to determine whether a clear process of disciple-making exists in their church and if any form …

A Model For Biblical Worldview Development In Evangelical Christian Emerging Adults, Roger Erdvig
A Model For Biblical Worldview Development In Evangelical Christian Emerging Adults, Roger Erdvig
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to develop a model of Biblical worldview development during emerging adulthood for Evangelical Christians, ages 18-23. Participants (N = 20) were Christian emerging adults who were nominated as having strong Biblical worldviews. Data was collected via personal worldview development timelines, semi-structured interviews, and a focus group session with select participants. Analysis of the data was conducted utilizing Corbin and Strauss’ (2015) grounded theory analysis protocol. The model generated in this study suggests that maturation in Biblical worldview results from employing various means to process the different prompts that Christian emerging adults encounter. …
