What American Evangelicals Miss: Reflections On The Lausanne Ylg2016 Conference, Marykate Morse
What American Evangelicals Miss: Reflections On The Lausanne Ylg2016 Conference, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
From August 3-11, 2016 in Jakarta, Indonesia, over 1000 experienced younger leaders from 150 countries came together for the Lausanne Younger Leaders Gathering. The last one was in Malaysia in 2006. The Younger Leaders Gathering happens once a generation, and the theme for this one was “United in the Great Story.”
Along with the younger leaders, 180 seasoned leaders joined them to serve as their mentors. Connect groups of 5-6 diverse participants with a mentor shared reflections on the Bible studies, told their stories with Life Maps, and prayed for each other. I helped train the mentors and also served …
A Weary Traveler’S Confession And Reflection: The Story Our ‘Bodies’ Tell, Marykate Morse
A Weary Traveler’S Confession And Reflection: The Story Our ‘Bodies’ Tell, Marykate Morse

A couple of months ago I was sitting on an airplane into the 21st hour of what was supposed to be an 8 hour trip, making a confession to myself. The evening before we weary 170+ passengers had finally debarked in Seattle – not Portland where we were supposed to land, but couldn’t because of weather. We were a sorry mess.
On this last leg of my trip, I’d been on the airplane for 9 hours, and we were only supposed to be on it for 5. The 4 extra hours were spent flying from one airport to another looking …
Gun Control Debates: Our Social Madness And A Spiritual Response, Marykate Morse
Gun Control Debates: Our Social Madness And A Spiritual Response, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
I was deeply saddened by the horrific murders at the Orlando night club, but then I watched with cynicism the gun debates happening again in Congress.
I’m thinking, “noble but useless.”
If Sandy Hook – the murder of 20 little children at their school desks with 6 of their teachers and staff – wasn’t enough to shock us into sensible gun control, then this won’t either.

Writing As A Spiritual Discipline, Marykate Morse

The Lady in the Van is a movie featuring Maggie Smith as an eccentric homeless woman of uncertain origins called Miss Shepherd. She lives in a van, and she parks her van in Alan Bennett’s London driveway for 15 years. It was meant to be for a couple of months.
Alan Bennett, who lives by himself and earns a living as a writer, is portrayed as two selves. He is divided between his ‘writing self’ and his ‘living self.’ He found the divide necessary because “Writing is talking to oneself.” By the end of the movie he integrates into one …
What The Church Could Learn From Oprah, Marykate Morse
What The Church Could Learn From Oprah, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Oprah had an internationally-loved talk show called “The Oprah Winfrey Show” which aired from 1986 to 2011. A few years ago I was bed-ridden because of a back injury, and I watched her show every day. It was pretty entertaining and interesting. I learned a lot of things, but I began to wonder why the church couldn’t be more like Oprah?
Spiritual Formation: Conformed To The Image Of Christ For What Purpose?, Marykate Morse
Spiritual Formation: Conformed To The Image Of Christ For What Purpose?, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Definitions matter. They provide a simple clarity to what a thing or idea is. A few weeks ago my doctoral students and I were talking about the definition of Christian spiritual formation. The most common definition is “being conformed to the image of Christ for the sake of others.” I have used this definition for years, and I have found it attributed to several authors.
When Male Leadership Is Privileged, Marykate Morse
When Male Leadership Is Privileged, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
There are subtle ways that privilege happens in ‘equality’ environments. One is the privilege of being emotionally disruptive, and it’s considered normal. Case in point. I was with a group of Christian leaders collaborating on an important project which had a short deadline. We were moving along at a good pace, everyone on the same page, until one man began to complain that this wasn’t what we should be doing. He thought we hadn’t all agreed on the purpose and that the shape of the project was off track with the mission. Now we were in the final stages of …
Culture And Holiness: Next Steps In The Conversation, Marykate Morse
Culture And Holiness: Next Steps In The Conversation, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
In December 2015 I posted a blog about a sitcom in which a Dad, dressed as Olaf while entertaining little children at a birthday party, accidentally exposed himself when his tights tore in the crotch. I asked, especially the 20-30 year olds, if they found this disturbing, because it bothered me. I also then asked, “What does holiness look like in 21st Century North America?” I heard back from several people via comments on the article and on Facebook.
The comments were helpful, so thank you for thinking with me on this. They were also varied and caused me to …
Do Large Christian Conferences Really Make A Difference? Reflections On Urbana15, Marykate Morse
Do Large Christian Conferences Really Make A Difference? Reflections On Urbana15, Marykate Morse
Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary
Though I’m a conference speaker and have attended a wide-variety of large conferences, I’m a little skeptical about their long-term transformative value. Perhaps 10-20 years ago, large conferences were powerful arenas for God’s purposes. But now with so much available to people in the digital age and with younger people’s needs so different, are they worth the effort and cost?
La Teología De La Creación Según Martín Lutero En Sus Lecciones Sobre El Génesis, Denis Kaiser
La Teología De La Creación Según Martín Lutero En Sus Lecciones Sobre El Génesis, Denis Kaiser

"In Luther’s lectures on the biblical creation account as found in Genesis 1:1 through 2:4, it was not so much the concept of “creation out of nothing,” but the idea of ultimate creation, preservation, and governance by God’s spoken word that formed the main emphasis. Thus, many of the themes touched on in these lectures center in Luther’s picture of God’s nature and character."

Islamic Political System In Sudan And Its National, Regional, And International Impact, Solomon Hailu
College of Arts and Cultural Studies Faculty Research and Scholarship
Solomon, Hailu, (2016) "Islamic Political System in Sudan and its National, Regional, and International Impact," Journal of African Policy Studies 22(1), pp.
The influence of radical Islamic ideology has been important in international relations at least since the revolution that toppled the Shah of Iran in1979. However, the influence of political Islam in Sudan's internal politics goes back even longer. This paper provides an overview of the historical background to the origin and development of political Islam in Sudan. It argues that the North Sudan's successive post-independent government’s forced Islamization of the South Sudan was the main contributing factor in …

Multicultural Adr And Family Law: A Brief Introduction To The Complexities Of Religious Arbitration, Michael J. Broyde
Multicultural Adr And Family Law: A Brief Introduction To The Complexities Of Religious Arbitration, Michael J. Broyde
Faculty Articles
Recent polls indicate that the U.S. population is getting less religious and more secular. This seems to mirror the nation’s— and its laws’—movement away from reflecting certain traditional values. While these movements have left some members of the religious population in a precarious situation, surrounded by a society whose values are changing before their eyes, it has also caused the religious to cling tighter to their respective faiths and become more entrenched in the values they assert.
As the government has, slowly but surely, aligned itself with the popular shift away from traditional religious values, the pleas of the religious …
Church Authority And Biblical Interpretation: Forms Of Authoritative Hermeneutics In Irenaeus And Tertullian, Adriani M. Rodrigues
Church Authority And Biblical Interpretation: Forms Of Authoritative Hermeneutics In Irenaeus And Tertullian, Adriani M. Rodrigues
Andrews University Seminary Student Journal
In order to protect the church from the misuse of scripture promoted by heretical movements, early church fathers advanced hermeneutical mechanisms of control to guide biblical interpretation, which included forms of authoritative hermeneutics. The present investigation describes and briefly analyzes occurrences of these forms in Irenaeus and Tertullian, focusing on the concepts of the rule of truth/faith and church authority. The conclusion of the article highlights inadequacies of authoritative hermeneutics.
Global South Christianity And Adventism: Trends And Implications, Christopher R. Mwashinga
Global South Christianity And Adventism: Trends And Implications, Christopher R. Mwashinga
Andrews University Seminary Student Journal
In recent decades, Christianity has experienced two major phenomena as a religion: its decline in the global North (Europe and North America) and its rise in the global South (Africa, Asia, and South America). The Seventh-day Adventist Church as a denomination has experienced similar trends. The global South has become the home to the majority of Adventists in the world and the global North is now home to only a minority. Studies show that this southward movement in Christian and Adventist demographics may continue for several decades. Studies also indicate a steady growth of other world religions on the continent …
The Historical Superscriptions Of Davidic Psalms: An Exegetical, Intertextual, And Methodological Analysis, Jerome L. Skinner
The Historical Superscriptions Of Davidic Psalms: An Exegetical, Intertextual, And Methodological Analysis, Jerome L. Skinner
Dissertations
The significance of the historical superscriptions (h/ss) that refer to David’s life (Pss 3, 7, 18, 34, 51, 52, 54, 56, 57, 59, 60, 63, 142) has been a matter of interest over the past century of Psalm Studies. An investigation into the structural and theological role1 of the thirteen Davidic h/ss and their psalms in the Psalter, as well as the role of David expressed in them reveals the nature of their origin, authorship, structural function, and theological import. While their historicity forms a large part of the discussion, at its core is the question of meaning. The literary …
The Two Witnesses Of Revelation 11:1-13: Arguments, Issues Of Interpretation, And A Way Forward, Ian R. Brown
The Two Witnesses Of Revelation 11:1-13: Arguments, Issues Of Interpretation, And A Way Forward, Ian R. Brown
Dissertations
The narrative of Rev 11:1-13 involves two prophet-witnesses. The question of the identity of the two witnesses of Rev 11:1-13 has been answered in a variety of ways. In the history of exegetical investigation, they have been seen as two actual people, a symbol for a larger group, or even a symbol for inanimate objects. Clearly, some proposals seem more plausible than others do; however, the debate remains open. Indeed, the possibility exists that a stronger case could be made for a previous proposal or that a new one could be found that is more agreeable to scholars of Revelation. …
Not Sinking With The Titanic: Personal Agency As A Key Factor In Transforming Trauma Into Posttraumatic Growth, Alida C. Vandijk
Not Sinking With The Titanic: Personal Agency As A Key Factor In Transforming Trauma Into Posttraumatic Growth, Alida C. Vandijk
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The discipline of spiritual care and psychotherapy integrates theology with social sciences. Theological reflection is the lens through which the social sciences are engaged. Using the theoretical framework of theological reflexivity and an understanding of people as living human documents, this doctoral dissertation examines the question, “What are some factors that enable an individual to transform a self-defined traumatic experience into posttraumatic growth?” The existential question of trauma and suffering is explored using the biblical narrative of the concubine in Judges 19 to examine her powerlessness and victimization, the narrative of Job to wrestle with the question of unjust suffering, …

War As Morally Unintelligible: Sovereign Agency And The Limits Of Kantian Autonomy, Philip J. Rossi
War As Morally Unintelligible: Sovereign Agency And The Limits Of Kantian Autonomy, Philip J. Rossi
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Kant’s treatment of war is usually discussed as part of his political philosophy or philosophy of history. In contrast, this essay locates these discussions in direct reference to major elements of his moral philosophy: autonomy, the categorical imperative, and the moral relationality of the kingdom of ends. Within this context, Kant’s account of war, particularly in writings from the 1790s, can be read as affirming war as morally unintelligible: It is the expression of a collective withdrawal from the constitutive relationality of moral community. This results in a radical disparity in the exercise of moral autonomy by the sovereign agency …

Gateway To The Syriac Saints: A Database Project, Jeanne-Nicole Mellon Saint-Laurent
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
This article describes The Gateway to the Syriac Saints, a database project developed by the Syriac Reference Portal (www.syriaca.org). It is a research tool for the study of Syriac saints and hagiographic texts. The Gateway to the Syriac Saints is a two-volume database: 1) Qadishe and 2) Bibliotheca Hagiographica Syriaca Electronica (BHSE).
Hagiography, the lives of the saints, is a multiform genre. It contains elements of myth, history, biblical exegesis, romance, and theology. The production of saints’ lives blossomed in late antiquity alongside the growth of the cult of the saints. Scholars have attended to hagiographic traditions in …
