Jagadish Chandra Bose And Vedantic Science, C. Mackenzie Brown Jan 2016

Jagadish Chandra Bose And Vedantic Science, C. Mackenzie Brown

Religion Faculty Research

'The real is one: wise men call it variously.' Utilizing this celebrated declaration of the Rig Veda as an epigraph in his first scientific monograph, Response in the Living and Non-Living, (1902), the audacious Indian physicist Jagadish Chandra Bose (1858-1937) intimated to the Western scientific world that his electrographic discovery of the unity of life - that the animate and the inanimate world are one - was an affirmation of the insights of the ancient Vedic seers.

Christian Higher Education And Students With Diverse Beliefs: Impacts And Challenges, Elize Celic, Beverly Christian, Andrew Matthes

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

The ethos, mission, and values of Christian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are usually grounded in a biblical worldview. Increasingly, Christian HEIs are attracting students who do not share the faith espoused by the institutions they attend. This qualitative case study explored the perceptions of six final-year education students with different belief frameworks to those of the Christian HEI they attended. They were interviewed to determine their perceptions of the transparency of the ethos, mission, and values of the HEI, the impact of the HEI on their lives, and the challenges they faced as students. The data revealed some positive impacts …

The Limits Of Human Flourishing: Reconstructing Theological Anthropology In Light Of Cognitive Disability, David N. Scott Jan 2016

The Limits Of Human Flourishing: Reconstructing Theological Anthropology In Light Of Cognitive Disability, David N. Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The concept of human flourishing currently holds a position of prominence within Christian theology. Numerous theologies assert that a person enjoys the fullness of humanity, not through conformity to an essential nature, but through being a living demonstration of what human being can become. This approach to theological anthropology has proven especially useful for advocacy on behalf of marginalized groups. Nevertheless, because this approach identifies human being with the capacity for purposive agency, it remains incapable of affirming the full humanity of persons with profound cognitive disabilities. These persons lack abilities that purposive agency presupposes, such as self-representation, language, and …

Jürgen Habermas On The (Non-)Translatability Of Religious Meaning, Kevin M. Vander Schel Jan 2016

Jürgen Habermas On The (Non-)Translatability Of Religious Meaning, Kevin M. Vander Schel

Religious Studies Faculty Scholarship

The relationship between religious faith and public reason has occupied an increasingly central role in Jürgen Habermas’s mature work. Yet this recent engagement with questions of religious meaning also illuminates a significant area of development in Habermas’s thought. While his earlier writings emphasized a need to subordinate religious beliefs to rational critique and to translate religious truth claims into publicly accessible forms of reasoning, his later writings signal a shift to a more cooperative understanding of religious faith and critical reason that highlights the ongoing potential of religion to advance rational discourse and social criticism in the public sphere. This …

Self reflection and personal assessment are important aspects of any professional's life and career, not the least of which is the professional educator. I have offered my own expression of education and method of teaching in reflecting on thirty-seven years of experience teaching at the college/university level in the hopes it might stimulate other professional educators to reflect on their own educational philosophy and methods of teaching.

Scandal And Censure: A Reinvestigation Of The Socio-Political Forces Surrounding The Disappearance Of Aimee Semple Mcpherson, Margaret English De Alminana

Selected Faculty Publications

This paper sets the oft-told narrative of McPherson’s disappearance and alleged sexual misconduct into important aspects of the historical context of her era. Although the accusations against the evangelist were widely embraced by the Pentecostal community—and although they continue to exhibit a shaping effect upon her legacy and legend—this paper uses primary historical research to reexamine these events through the lens of emerging, powerful cultural forces, including entrenched female biases common in the post-Victorian era, the ascendance of the American mob, the public’s rejection of prohibition and revulsion against the Women’s Temperance Union and recent Suffragist gains, and the desire …

A Biblical Investigation Of Matriarchal Structures In Ancient Semitic Life, Margaret English De Alminana Jan 2016

A Biblical Investigation Of Matriarchal Structures In Ancient Semitic Life, Margaret English De Alminana

Selected Faculty Publications

This paper shall demonstrate that a gender-stratified template for the leadership of family and government believed to be modeled after ancient Semitic patriarchal structures according to a pattern found in Old Testament biblical texts is erroneous. It shall demonstrate that strong elements of matriarchalism existed alongside of patriarchalism, and that Old Testament texts offer no accurate template for gender-based governance.

Jesus Christ’S Interactions With The Women Of The New Testament, Mary Jane Woodger Jan 2016

Jesus Christ’S Interactions With The Women Of The New Testament, Mary Jane Woodger

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In this paper, Christ’s ministry is characterized by his relationship with the females found in the four gospels. The drastic differences between the ways Jesus and society treated women are emphasized. The culture into which Christ was born had degraded women for generations. Under Christ’s leadership first-century priesthood brethren were shown how to treat women. However, after Christ’s ascension Hellenistic philosophy pervaded the Christian Church’s thinking and accelerated an apostate perception of women. This study explores Jesus’s actions and teachings which restored women’s true identity. In short, this paper focuses on the reverence, respect, and loving kindnesses that Christ showed …

Onomastic Wordplay On Joseph And Benjamin And Gezera Shawa In The Book Of Mormon, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2016

Onomastic Wordplay On Joseph And Benjamin And Gezera Shawa In The Book Of Mormon, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Book of Mormon contains several quotations from the Hebrew Bible that have been juxtaposed on the basis of shared words or phrases, this for the purpose of interpreting the cited scriptural passages in light of one another. This exegetical technique — one that Jesus himself used — came to be known in later rabbinic times as Gezera Shawa (“equal statute”). In several additional instances, the use of Gezera Shawa converges with onomastic wordplay. Nephi uses a Gezera Shawa involving Isaiah 11:11 and Isaiah 29:14 twice on the basis of the yāsap verb‑forms yôsîp/yôsīp (2 Nephi 25:17 and quoting the …

Joseph Smith, The Book Of Mormon, And The American Renaissance: An Update, Robert A. Rees Jan 2016

Joseph Smith, The Book Of Mormon, And The American Renaissance: An Update, Robert A. Rees

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This is a follow-up to my article, “Joseph Smith and the American Renaissance,” published in Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought in 2002.1 My purpose in writing that article was to consider Joseph Smith in relation to his more illustrious contemporary American authors — Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Walt Whitman. In that article I tried to demonstrate that in comparison with these writers, Joseph Smith did not possess the literary imagination, talent, authorial maturity, education, cultural milieu, knowledge base, or sophistication necessary to produce the Book of Mormon; nor, I argued, had he …

“See That Ye Are Not Lifted Up”: The Name Zoram And Its Paronomastic Pejoration, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2016

“See That Ye Are Not Lifted Up”: The Name Zoram And Its Paronomastic Pejoration, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The most likely etymology for the name Zoram is a third person singular perfect qal or pôʿal form of the Semitic/Hebrew verb *zrm, with the meaning, “He [God] has [is] poured forth in floods.” However, the name could also have been heard and interpreted as a theophoric –rām name, of which there are many in the biblical Hebrew onomasticon (Ram, Abram, Abiram, Joram/Jehoram, Malchiram, etc., cf. Hiram [Hyrum]/Huram). So analyzed, Zoram would connote something like “the one who is high,” “the one who is exalted” or even “the person of the Exalted One [or high place].” This has important implications …
