We Need A Church That's Inside-Out, Heather Josselyn-Cranson Jan 2016

We Need A Church That's Inside-Out, Heather Josselyn-Cranson

Northwestern Review

This hymn gives voice to one frustration that many Christians feel: a despair over watching Christian factions argue about doctrine while the poor suffer outside of church walls. This hymn calls us to see the self-obsession which prevents us from attending to those in need (first stanza), confess our neglect of Jesus' mandate to care for others (second stanza), and turn away from the distractions of petty bickering toward the expression of Christ's peace, grace, and love to all those outside the church (third stanza).

Days Will Come That Sap Our Vigor, Heather Josselyn-Cranson Jan 2016

Days Will Come That Sap Our Vigor, Heather Josselyn-Cranson

Northwestern Review

"Days Will Come that Sap our Vigor" speaks encouragement to individuals and congregations in the face of exhaustion (the first stanza), depression (the second stanza), and even death (the last stanza). In each case, God restores to us strength, hope, and life. The tune for this text, FALLS PARK, alludes to the fact that the author wrote the hymn text after visiting Falls Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Christian Faith And The Scientific Explanation Of Religion, Donald H. Wacome Jan 2016

Christian Faith And The Scientific Explanation Of Religion, Donald H. Wacome

Northwestern Review

The cognitive theory of religion seems to threaten to debunk religion, including Christianity, as irrational. The cognitive theory explains human religiosity as an accident, a mere byproduct, of the interaction of mental mechanisms evolved for other purposes. The threat to religion can be neutralized by finding good reasons for religious beliefs which can be identified independent of the operation of the cognitive mechanisms the theory posits. Christian faith should be understood not as sub-rational belief, but as trust in the God who resurrected Jesus Christ. Our natural religiosity, like our natural morality, has no necessary connection to God, but God …

Full, Conscious, And Active…Listening?, Heather Josselyn-Cranson Jan 2016

Full, Conscious, And Active…Listening?, Heather Josselyn-Cranson

Northwestern Review

Active participation by Christian laity in singing is a goal assumed by all liturgical leaders, scholars, and musicians. Is singing, though, the only form of active participation in liturgical music? What about listening? Drawing on discussions of listening by Aaron Copland, Frank Burch Brown, and Ronald J. Allen, it becomes clear that listening well is an active task, one for which musical leaders must prepare their congregations. Lay people should be encouraged to both receive music as a gift and to search out what it means in relationship to the congregation, the day, and the liturgical context. Congregations also need …

It Is Time To Talk, Part 3: How Adventist Conferences Became Segregated, David K. Penno Jan 2016

It Is Time To Talk, Part 3: How Adventist Conferences Became Segregated, David K. Penno

Faculty Publications

In the previous two articles we have discussed some theological and psychological/sociological issues as they relate to organizational segregation in the Seventh-day Church. Our purpose in these articles is not to cover each area exhaustively, but rather to pique an interest is designing a venue, a safe “container,” where an honest, open, and serious dialogue might allow us to explore the relevance of organizational segregation in the Adventist Church today. Rather than promoting a particular direction we should go, I hope to help spark the discussion that would lead us collectively, under the Holy Spirit’s guidance, to make decisions about …

The Third Person Of The Trinity: How The Holy Spirit Facilitates Man's Walk With God, Jimmie H. Evans Iii Jan 2016

The Third Person Of The Trinity: How The Holy Spirit Facilitates Man's Walk With God, Jimmie H. Evans Iii

Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research

Much of the modern church knows the Father and the Son very well as part of its common worship, practice, and conversation. However, the Holy Spirit is given little more than recognition in many circles. He is referenced, talked about, and mentioned in songs and sermons, but there is often a resistance to letting Him lead the believer and the church. It is vital that the church opens its eyes to the indwelling, personal, and powerful Spirit which the Lord has sent to them. Through a study of the role of the Holy Spirit within the Scriptures, as well as …

From Punjab To Provo: Assimilation And Alienation Of Asian Mormons In The Heart Of Lds Culture, Rabia Cheema, Gregory Wilkinson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

After moving to the United States and especially in a culture like BYU, I wanted to share my experiences as an immigrant. Through this paper, I wanted to open up about the struggles that I believe that almost every immigrant in the United States goes through. To add on to those struggles, being in a place like Utah which is Mormon dominated, it becomes extremely hard to retain your own identity. I have seen myself losing my identity just to fit in the culture of BYU. Just to feel accepted here, I changed myself a whole lot which now I …

The Disingenuousness Of The Jesus Legend In Popular Media, Emma L. Louie Jan 2016

The Disingenuousness Of The Jesus Legend In Popular Media, Emma L. Louie

Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research

In America today, a major source of contention among theologians involves the Resurrection, a controversy that has ensued since historical times (1 Cor 15: 12-19 [KJV]). This essay will seek to develop a plausible response to the legend theory, a prevalent inconspicuous attack on the resurrection of Jesus and thus the foundation of Christianity, by addressing the question “Is Jesus like Santa Clause?” Thereby, providing evidence, which reveals the disingenuousness of the Jesus legend as portrayed in popular media by investigating the reality of the historical Jesus. In doing so, an examination of the miracle-claim will be presented through an …

Historical Consequence Of The Misinterpretation Of The Doctrine Of Election, Thomas Glenn Sleeth Jan 2016

Historical Consequence Of The Misinterpretation Of The Doctrine Of Election, Thomas Glenn Sleeth

Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research

The goal of this research was to demonstrate how Scripture has been misrepresented throughout the centuries and utilized as a specific tool to enable nations and empires with more sophisticated technological backgrounds to exploit developing cultures and relegate them to a position of inferiority. Specifically, the misinterpretation of the Doctrine of Election has been a principle motivating factor and justification to conquer indigenous groups and subjugate populations under the guise of proselytization. Colonization, Imperialism, Slavery and nation-sanctioned discrimination have all occurred under the self-righteous banner of performing God’s will. Biblical principle and doctrine neither advocate nor condone any of the …

Self-Mirroring Through Broken Pieces: Jesus Among The Comfortwomen, Sunggu Yang Jan 2016

Self-Mirroring Through Broken Pieces: Jesus Among The Comfortwomen, Sunggu Yang

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Once again, there is an emotional eruption and political commotion in South Korea after the Japanese and Korean governments announced their diplomat “deal” on the Comfort Women on December 28, 2015. The official agreement includes a formal apology and a compensation of $8.3 million from the Japanese government. There is one important condition also included in the agreement; that this resolution should be “final and irreversible” this year onward. On the surface, the deal seems good—formal apology and some monetary compensation finalized. But then, why the emotional eruption and vehement opposition, especially from the Korean Comfort Women rights activists? In …

The Unsuccessful Japan Mission And Lds Missiology, Kaitlyn Jensen, Gregory Wilkinson Jan 2016

The Unsuccessful Japan Mission And Lds Missiology, Kaitlyn Jensen, Gregory Wilkinson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the early years of the Latter-day Saint church a mission to Japan was opened in an effort to continue the spread of the gospel and the advancement of a worldwide church but in terms of evangelical success the mission was largely ineffective. The focus of this project has been to delve into the methods of evangelism in order to understand and contextualize the failure of the Japan mission. The experiences of Jay Clair Jensen and other LDS missionaries at the time have offered a clearer picture of the underlying problems that stymied the mission.

It Is Time To Talk, Part 2: Why Racial Integration Is So Hard, David K. Penno

Faculty Publications

In this series of articles we are exploring some key areas that need to be addressed in any serious discussion about ethnic separation in the Adventist Church. The previous article reviewed the theological debate that speaks to the issue of organizational segregation in the church. Does the Word of God demand integration at all levels of the organization, or does it allow for some form of segregation? In this article we will describe some of the psychological and sociological realities that lead us to naturally segregate ourselves.

Divine Foreknowledge And The Problem Of Evil: Four Views, Nathan S. Justice Jan 2016

Divine Foreknowledge And The Problem Of Evil: Four Views, Nathan S. Justice

The Kabod

This paper examines the issues of divine foreknowledge and the Problem of Evil from the standpoint of four different theological systems: Open Theism, Arminianism, Molinism, and Calvinism. The author summarizes each view’s understanding of divine foreknowledge and then explains how this understanding applies to the view’s refutation of the Problem of Evil.
