Response To 1 Timothy 2:11-12 Or Its Parallel, 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 By Three Sixteenth-Century Protestant Women Theologians: Argula Von Grumbach, Marie Dentiére, And Anne Askew, Katharine German Hall
LMU Theses and Dissertations
The Protestant women who engaged in theology and biblical scholarship throughout the sixteenth century faced numerous barriers entering into and being heard within their Protestant movements. Because Protestants recognize Scripture as the primary authority on matters of faith, 1 Timothy 2:11-12, along with its parallel in 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, provided a unique impediment to sixteenth-century Protestant women theologians. These women faced the burden of both affirming the authority of Scripture and simultaneously contravening the biblical prohibition against women teaching. Many women theologians of the time; including Argula von Grumbach, Marie Dentiére, and Anne Askew; addressed this issue in their writings. …
South Asian Muslim Health Outcomes In Great Britain: The National Health Service And The British National Imaginary, Marni P. Schreiber
South Asian Muslim Health Outcomes In Great Britain: The National Health Service And The British National Imaginary, Marni P. Schreiber
Religious Studies Honors Projects
Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) ensures equal access care to all British residents. Health outcomes, nonetheless, vary across socioeconomic class, education level, and geographic location, a phenomenon particularly affecting Britain’s South Asian Muslim communities. This paper will contextualize the NHS within the British national imaginary and analyze discursive, social, and economic variables influencing Pakistani and Bangladeshi poor health. I will integrate religious-based analysis into healthcare studies and question if health outcomes act as a marker of distinction between minority and majority populations. Though Muslim organizations, the NHS, the Department of Health, and government multicultural policies hope to reverse health disparities, …

The Call To Love: A Catholic’S Guide To New Understandings Of Homosexual Inclusivity, Eddie-Joe Vieyra
The Call To Love: A Catholic’S Guide To New Understandings Of Homosexual Inclusivity, Eddie-Joe Vieyra
LMU Theses and Dissertations
The issue of homosexual inclusivity within the Catholic Church has been and continues to be at the center of much debate. This thesis analyzes the issue by engaging the document ,“The Pastoral Care of the Homosexual Person” written by Joseph Ratzinger. New exegetical interpretations of both Old and New Testament texts are placed in dialogue with interpretations utilized by Ratzinger in his letter. These interpretations serve to provide an alternative and liberating reading of seminal texts that have been used to oppress and exclude the Queer community from the Catholic Church. Queer theology is then used to draw connections between …

Wilderness, Kathryn E. Bucolo
Wilderness, Kathryn E. Bucolo
Celebration
The collection of short stories I have written focuses on how people process (or do not process) tragedy, especially as related to themes of grief, memory, and faith. Most of the stories I have written are dysfunctional narratives in that they do not necessarily provide solid conclusions or solutions for the characters or readers, reflecting current trends in literature to move away from the didactic and moralistic in favor of the ambiguous and unstable, the hopeless and sorrowful. In "Wilderness", one of the pieces I wrote for my collection, Robert struggles with the death of his wife when he realizes …

Schrödinger And Nietzsche And Life: Eternal Recurrence And The Conscious Now, Babette Babich
Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections
The phenomenological question of consciousness usually associated with Husserl (although there are echoes of this in Augustine as in Marcus Aurelius, Kant and Schopenhauer), is the consciousness of the now, the present moment. I explore this consciousness for Erwin Schrödinger, which for him included reference to the Upaniṣads together with Nietzsche’s central teaching or “thinking” of the eternal recurrence of the same.

"Religion is a very complicated concept for many people, but religion can be seen in every corner of the world and its effects come in many different shapes and sizes. One word that can be seen as an effect or that is simply associated often with religion is violence. Violence like religion comes in many different forms and can be seen very easily in the world around us. Many people have written on the concepts of religion and violence and how they are connected with each other. But it …

"I have a dream that one day my fellow Black Americans will open their eyes to the world filled with self-hatred that they themselves have perpetuated throughout the years. I also have a dream that tomorrow the sun will rise on a new generation of prosperous young black people will emerge from the shadows that once consumed our future and rise up against the stereotype. We fail to realize that the foundation laid down for us by the great freedom fighters in our past is crumbling right below our …

Eruditio Ardescens
This last promise in Matthew extends beyond the life span of the Apostles to every believer that commits to the task of raising up a group of Christ-followers among every ethno-linguistic people groups on earth “to the end of the age” (Matt 28:20b). This phrase is also found in Matt 13:39-40, 49; 24:3, which refer to the end of the present age when the Son of Man returns to establish His kingdom. Thus the promise not only applied to these 1st century disciples, but to every disciple since then and until the end of the Church Age. We can …
The Continuation Of Israel’S Land Promise In The New Testament: A Fresh Approach, A. Boyd Luter
The Continuation Of Israel’S Land Promise In The New Testament: A Fresh Approach, A. Boyd Luter
Eruditio Ardescens
This article responds to recent evangelical interpreters who have argued that the land promise given to Israel in the Old Testament is no longer in effect based on the scarcity of references to the promise in the New Testament. The paper asserts that the Land Promise is not only present in the New Testament, but even provides a sort of overall theological framework for the New Testament.
Toward An Ecotheological Anthropology, Peter Garcia
Toward An Ecotheological Anthropology, Peter Garcia
Seminary Masters Theses
The image of God has carried with it a special designation for humanity within the panoply of life on earth. This project attempts to reorient and expand theological anthropology to include the ecological dimension in Christian perspective to cultivate an understanding of the ecological self. This project will place traditional interpretations of what it means to be human into conversation with twentieth-century ecological philosophies and Native American spirituality in order to broaden the Christian imagination for understanding ourselves within creation. Vine Deloria’s analyses of Western temporal thinking and spatial thinking demonstrated by Native worldviews provides perspective for necessary theological shifts …
When Business Is The Mission: A Study Of Faith-Based Social Business In Sub-Saharan Africa, Brian W. Albright
When Business Is The Mission: A Study Of Faith-Based Social Business In Sub-Saharan Africa, Brian W. Albright
Business as Mission Theses and Dissertations
There is an extraordinary group of people, motivated by their Christian faith, starting businesses in Sub-Saharan Africa because they believe that business plays a key role in alleviating poverty. These faith-based social business (FSB) leaders face situations similar to those faced by leaders in other academic and practitioner fields including business as mission, social entrepreneurship, international business, and international development, given their pursuit of multiple-bottom lines, cross-cultural engagement in undeveloped nations, and a focus on integration of faith. The complexities of their contexts create opportunities and challenges in which their strategies and operations require further investigation and analysis.
This case …

Brain-Based Worship: Re-Membering The Mind-Body Connection, Paula Champion-Jones
Brain-Based Worship: Re-Membering The Mind-Body Connection, Paula Champion-Jones
Doctor of Ministry
Historically, it has been believed that Christian formation occurs primarily in the context of worship. Because both traditional and contemporary worship services are routinely structured around the skills of persuasive rhetoric and logic, most worship services effectively ignore the impact of experiential, embodied knowledge. Recent research in neuroscience has proven that humans are sensory-motor-emotional-thinking beings who learn best when body, brain, and emotions are simultaneously engaged. A fresh paradigm for teaching, brain-based leaning, is proving to result in learning that is more memorable, more likely to result in long-term change in the behavior of the learner, and more likely to …

A Historical Account Of The Conceptual Evolution Of Satan In The Abrahamic Belief Traditions, Hanan Huneidi
Senior Theses
This paper shows a historical account of the development of the Satan persona in the Abrahamic belief traditions beginning with early Judaism in which Satan evolves most vastly from beginning as merely an action verb to ending as a tempter of man, then moving into the Christian New Testament evil entity personified as a direct opponent to Jesus, and finally ending with Islam’s perspective of a leader of the Jinn.

Shinto: An Experience Of Being At Home In The World With Nature And With Others, Marcus Evans
Shinto: An Experience Of Being At Home In The World With Nature And With Others, Marcus Evans
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study discloses Shinto’s experiential and existential significance and aims to articulate Shinto’s sacred objective. It shows that Shinto, by way of experience, communicates being in the world with nature and with others as a sacred objective. This suggests that Shinto, in communicating its objective, appeals to the emotions more so than to the intellect; and that Shinto’s sacred objective does not transcend the natural world of both nature and everyday affairs. This study pursues this goal by showing the experiential and existential dimensions of the three primary features of Shinto: it shows how kami (or kami-ness) is thought of …

Our 87 year-old Elder, a third-generation descendent of a Chinese American fishing village in Northern California, gives us a timid smile from behind the bar of the small diner that he and his family have operated since the 1940s. My students and I have just set up a laptop and microphone for recording a first-person account of his life story. The Elder looks over our shoulders, where a man stands with a stern face and his arms crossed—this is a member of the non-profit organization that now operates the village as a park. The twinkles in the eyes …

"When Martin Luther King Jr spoke these words, he was addressing the masses of mainly Black Americans who were fighting for freedom from discrimination and for the right to be treated as equally as any other human being. The struggle was long and hard. They had to endure abuse from the white men around them, who felt that they did not deserve to have equal rights. This was a struggle that easily erupted into physical violence. The white men fought the blacks and the blacks fought back. However, Dr. …

"Chapter 8, entitled “Violence and Religion” was written by Dr. Darlene Fozard Weaver for the textbook Introduction to Religious Studies. In this chapter, Weaver discusses the connection between violence and religion that has been prevalent in world history as well as provide questions aimed at the reader in order to provoke reflection and discussion. The most thought‐provoking of these include “Is religion inherently violent? Why or why not?” and “Could teaching religion be an act of violence? Why or why not?” Religion is not inherently violent"
