Christ, The Meeting Point Of Sacramental And Trinitarian Theology, Nathan Peter Chase Mar 2014

Christ, The Meeting Point Of Sacramental And Trinitarian Theology, Nathan Peter Chase

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper explores the relationship between the liturgical life of the Church and the operation of the Trinity in the economy of grace through the work of Fr. Edward Kilmartin. Kilmartin sought to better explain how humanity’s relationship with God through prayer and the sacraments was established. For him, theologians’ understanding of the Trinity in what has become known as the procession model allowed for the katabatic flow of grace to humanity but failed to explain the anabatic flow of grace from humanity back up to God. This paper looks at the complementary model, the bestowal model, that Kilmartin developed …

Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities In Faith Communities: Perspectives Of Catholic Religious Leaders, Mazna Patka Mar 2014

Individuals With Intellectual Disabilities In Faith Communities: Perspectives Of Catholic Religious Leaders, Mazna Patka

Dissertations and Theses

Community psychology is concerned with the relationship between individuals and social systems in community contexts, but the field has under-explored the role of religious organizations in the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Worldwide, most people identify with a religion, and congregations serve as important mediating structure that creates a sense of community and provides linkages between individuals and society. There may be significant benefits to religious participation, including greater life satisfaction, health, and quality of life. Such benefits may be especially important to individuals with intellectual disability who generally experience poorer outcomes. However, we know very little about the …

Zen And The Art Of Treason: Radical Buddhism In Meiji Era (1868–1912) Japan, James Mark Shields Mar 2014

Zen And The Art Of Treason: Radical Buddhism In Meiji Era (1868–1912) Japan, James Mark Shields

Faculty Journal Articles

In the early decades of the twentieth century, as Japanese society became engulfed in war and increasing nationalism, the majority of Buddhist leaders and institutions capitulated to the status quo. At the same time, there was a stream of ‘resistance’ among a few Buddhist figures, both priests and laity. These instances of progressive and ‘radical Buddhism’ had roots in late Edo-period peasant revolts, the lingering discourse of early Meiji period liberalism, trends within Buddhist reform and modernisation and the emergence in the first decade of the twentieth century of radical political thought, including various forms of socialism and anarchism. This …

A Period Of Transition: Early Islamic And Umayyad Coinage, Anna Tiner Mar 2014

A Period Of Transition: Early Islamic And Umayyad Coinage, Anna Tiner

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

John Wilson, dean emeritus and professor of religion at Pepperdine University, has accumulated a collection of over 1200 coins from the Holy Land dating from the Persian Period (c. 5th century) to the time of the Crusaders (c. 14th century). Wilson’s interest in these coins has given many Pepperdine undergraduate students the opportunity to study and research the coins’ significance in historical, religious and artistic context. From Wilson’s generosity, I, a senior art history major at Pepperdine, have been given the opportunity to analyze four coins from his collection dating from 620 AD to 680 AD. These four coins provides …

Displaying Loyalty In The Midst Of Rebellion: Jewish Loyalist Coins In The 1st Century, Eric Kim Mar 2014

Displaying Loyalty In The Midst Of Rebellion: Jewish Loyalist Coins In The 1st Century, Eric Kim

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

The First Jewish Revolt was a decisive event for the Jewish people which had ripple effects for Judaism all the way into modernity. However, the revolt was not as homogenous as it is often portrayed to be. Although Jerusalem, the focal point of the revolt, was rife with civil war and revolt against the Romans, other Jewish cities did not all share these sentiments. Notably, the city of Sepphoris is representative of a Jewish city that was loyal to their Roman overseers. This study focused on a bronze coin minted in Sepphoris during the Revolt and what the symbols and …

A Coin From Caesarea Philippi: Julia Domna, Laura De La Torre Mar 2014

A Coin From Caesarea Philippi: Julia Domna, Laura De La Torre

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

The year is 193 A.D., and the Severan Dynasty has begun. For the first time in Roman history, the emperor, Septimius Severus, is from Leptis Magna (present day Libya). His wife, Julia Domna, is also a foreigner, from Emersa, Syria. Through extensive travel, the two were able to create a unified Roman Empire. One of their early trips brought them to Caesarea Philippi, in what is today northern Israel; the coin under study commemorated this trip (199 A.D.). This coin reveals the relationship between Caesarea Philippi and Rome in the beginning of the Severan dynasty, and it demonstrates the transformation …

Communication As Yoga, Kristen Caroline Blinne Mar 2014

Communication As Yoga, Kristen Caroline Blinne

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I am in conversation with the following questions: How can individuals and communities teach and learn to engage more peacefully, nonviolently, and compassionately with each other? Further, how can one practice a style of communication that helps at least one person suffer less each day? In asking these questions, my goal has been to imagine as well as attempt to actualize a world where individuals and communities work together to create less suffering in each other's lives by first developing compassionate awareness of our interconnectedness, then "waking up" not only to our own divinity but also to …

Community-Level Interventions For Reconciling Conflicting Religious And Sexual Domains In Identity Incongruity, Renato M. Liboro Mar 2014

Community-Level Interventions For Reconciling Conflicting Religious And Sexual Domains In Identity Incongruity, Renato M. Liboro

Psychology Faculty Research

Two of the most unstable domains involved in identity formation, the religious and sexual domains, come into conflict when vulnerable populations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community experience oppression from the indoctrination of religious beliefs that persecute their sexual orientation. This conflict, aptly termed identity incongruity in this article’s discourse, results in a schism that adversely affects these vulnerable populations. This paper investigates the roles of religion, spirituality and available institutional solutions to propose customized, culturally adapted, contextually based and collaborative community-level interventions that would facilitate the reconciliation of the conflicting identity domains.

Scripture And Prayer In Christian Education -- Nurturing, Discipleschip, And Retention, Adrienne J. Royo

Faculty Works

PowerPoint presentation

Can Scripture and Prayer be anchors for success in academia, as well as a forum for nurturing, discipleship, and retention? Christian education bears the objective of spiritual growth and academic achievement. To attain this goal in my classes, each student selects, provides, and models, linguistically-speaking, a chosen Scripture reading, with a life application. Prayer is offered, providing a framework for the formulation of a prayer in the target language, facilitating competence to communicate with God through a newly acquired means. Studies have shown that the ability to express one's inner thoughts in another language increases one's aptitude and …

P-23 Worldview 2.0: Revisiting, Refinding, And Refining Faith In The University Years, Jacina Shultz

Honors Scholars & Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium Programs

In this non-fiction, creative extended essay, I revisit my worldview essay from Western Heritage, specifically focusing on my belief in a loving God. I trace my path to this belief, beginning with my freshmen year of college when I first started to question its legitimacy. Though teetering on the edge of agnosticism, I eventually learned how a belief in a loving God is not a blind one. I came to understand what it means to have a relationship with God. The project reconstructs the reasoning that verified to me that a faith in God does not have to be ignorant. …

The Student Augustinian Values Institute: Assessing Its Impact Of Enhancing The Understanding And Experience Of The Augustinian Core Values Of Veritas, Unitas, And Caritas Upon Students In Augustinian Secondary Schools, Stephen M. Curry

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Educational leadership understands the importance of teaching values in its schools and incorporates this philosophy into the school’s symbolic and structural systems. Roman Catholic Church leaders have always endorsed the teaching of values in its schools and this position was sanctioned at its Second Vatican Council (Vatican Council II, 1962-65). One aspect of the Council emphasized the importance of Catholic education as an essential vehicle for proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ. Catholic schools founded and sponsored by religious communities were challenged to reappropriate their founders’ charisms in their educational ministries. The Order of St. Augustine is an example …
