Confronting Five-Point Calvinism, Louis C. Midgley Jan 2013

Confronting Five-Point Calvinism, Louis C. Midgley

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The arguments in Roger Olson’s Against Calvinism rest on his deep sympathies with the Dutch theologian Jacobus Arminius (1560–1609), whose followers were known as Remonstrants. Arminians traditionally qualify, question, or reject what is commonly known as Five-Point Calvinism which is often but not necessarily summed up by the acronym TULIP: Total depravity, Unconditional election, Limited atonement, Irresistible grace, and Perseverance. Olson traces the versions of Calvinist dogmatic theology to which he objects back to the decisions made at the famous Synod of Dort, a gathering of Calvinist divines that took place in the city of Dort (Dordrecht in Dutch) in …

Josiah’S Reform: An Introduction, Benjamin L. Mcguire

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In 1951 in The Improvement Era, Sidney B. Sperry published a short article titled “Some Problems of Interest Relating to the Brass Plates.” 1 In this article he outlines several problems including issues related to the Pentateuch, Jeremiah’s prophecies, The Book of the Law, and the Brass Plates themselves. In many ways, Sperry laid down a gauntlet that has been taken up many times by LDS scholars looking for answers that help to explain these issues in the Book of Mormon within the context of the best current biblical scholarship.

The Sôd Of Yhwh And The Endowment, William J. Hamblin Jan 2013

The Sôd Of Yhwh And The Endowment, William J. Hamblin

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In the Hebrew Bible, the Sôd of God was a council of celestial beings who consulted with God, learned His sôd/secret plan, and then fulfilled that plan. This paper argues that the LDS endowment is, in part, a ritual reenactment of the sôd, where the participants observe the sôd/council of God, learn the sôd/ secret plan of God, and covenant to fulfill that plan.

Suffering In Vain: A Study Of The Interpretation Of Πασχω In Galatians 3.4, John Anthony Dunne Jan 2013

Suffering In Vain: A Study Of The Interpretation Of Πασχω In Galatians 3.4, John Anthony Dunne

Seminary Faculty Publications

Modern scholarship is divided on the interpretation of πάσχω in Gal. 3.4, and there has yet to be a definitive study on the subject attempting to rectify the disagreements. The clear consensus prior to the late seventeenth century was that πάσχω possessed negative connotations in this passage. This interpretation was briefly challenged by Justus Christoph Schomer (1648–1693), influencing the majority of German scholarship and creating a major polarity among scholars in the English-speaking world. After making this history of interpretation known, the present study tries to demonstrate that, lexically, thematically and contextually, the preferable interpretation regards πάσχω as a reference …

Bringing Feminism, Halakhah, And Social Status Together: Women's Ordination In American Judaism, Michelle Seares Jan 2013

Bringing Feminism, Halakhah, And Social Status Together: Women's Ordination In American Judaism, Michelle Seares

Senior Scholars Papers in Jewish Studies

The ordination of women as rabbis is seen as one of the most important steps in bringing American Judaism in line with contemporary American values. However, the road to women’s ordination was a long and contentious one that is still being debated in Orthodox circles. The most problematic challenges to changing the role of women in Orthodox Judaism are certain exemptions and prohibitions outlined in the halakhah (Jewish law) that pertain to women. The halakhah exempts women from positive, time-bound commandments and for the purpose of ordination, the most important are those relating to public worship. However, many sources agree …
