Reconciliation: 2 Corinthians 5:16-21, Norm Mathers
Reconciliation: 2 Corinthians 5:16-21, Norm Mathers
SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations
The New Testament doctrine of reconciliation has been misunderstood and misinterpreted. The historical result has been a faulty understanding of the Pauline model of reconciliation in 2 Corinthians 5:16-21. Both Aulen’s Christus Victor and Barth’s Humanity of God have stopped at general reconciliation. It is through Christ’s death that the world has been reconcilied to God and God to the world. No offer of salvation is necessary. The failed understanding of the meaning of reconciliation has led to focus on the horizontal relationship of reconciliation between individuals and peoples of different racial and ethnic backgrounds. Some support is found in …
Review: Issei Buddhism In The Americas, Justin Kh Tse
Review: Issei Buddhism In The Americas, Justin Kh Tse
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Issei Buddhism in the Americas makes a unique contribution both to Asian and Asian American studies. The authors premise Issei Buddhism in the Americas as a final stage in bukkyo tozen, the eastward-moving transmission of Buddhism from India traditionally thought to have ended in Japan. Their work is thus a contribution to Asian studies, both in terms of how Japan entered a global age and of extending the analysis of a Japanese religious form to the Americas. Following Eiichiro Azuma, the editors and their colleagues demonstrate that Issei Buddhists lived "between two empires," as their experiences of dislocation from Japan …

If you haven't thought about the biblical meaning of the Sabbath lately and your mind if focused on business, I recommend that you start considering Sabbath now with the help of the book Sunday, Sabbath and the Weekend. Remember the Sabbath! Remembering (Exodus 20:8) and observing (Deut. 5:12) the Sabbath is what the book helps us do by offering a collection of fourteen essays on the Sabbath and what this concept and practice mean in a contemporary global context.

The Theoretical Symbolism Of Eruvin: A Model Of Dual-Identity And Sacred Space, Liza Stoltz Hanson
The Theoretical Symbolism Of Eruvin: A Model Of Dual-Identity And Sacred Space, Liza Stoltz Hanson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Eruvin are an innovative solution to the logistical “problem” of carrying on the weekly Sabbath. Boundaries that symbolically extend the walls of private homes into the public sphere, eruvin allow Orthodox Jews to carry objects outside of their homes on the Sabbath, a seemingly simple act that would otherwise be prohibited. Constructed according to intricate Rabbinic specifications, eruvin use existing architectural elements such as walls, train tracks, roadways and telephone wires, as well as natural features like rivers to create a continuous boundary. This paper will examine the theoretical significance of creating such a space. My argument maintains that beyond …

Concordia Journal -Center For Hispanic Studies 25 Years, Dale Meyer, Alberto Garcia, Beatriz Hoppe, Eloy Gonzalez, Mark Kempff, Leopoldo A. Sanchez, Douglas Groll, Gregory Klotz
Artículos obra entre Hispano/Latinos
If the cover didn't give it away, this issue of Concordia Journal is a special theme issue celebrating the 25 years of Concordia Seminary's Center for Hispanic Studies, formerly the Hispanic Institute of Theology. Perhaps nothing more needs to be said than that.
Why? Because the articles speak for themselves, representing, at least metaphorically, the past, present, and future of the Latino experience of Lutheranism and, more broadly, Christianity in the Americas. And the editorial roundtable speaks with urgency about what the Latino contribution to American Lutheranism will mean within a society that will soon have no majorities, but a …
Bottom-Up Methodologies In Emerging Models, Thomas S. Cahoon
Bottom-Up Methodologies In Emerging Models, Thomas S. Cahoon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The post-modern turn in the millennial generation has prompted a response toward religious and organizational authorities, whose organizations do not keep with the changing demand of post-modern individuals. The shift in preferences is marked by a movement from top-down hierarchical models, toward a de-centralized, bottom-up style demonstrated in recent movements. This paper examines the shift of doctrine and praxis within the American evangelical church and a simultaneous development of new methodologies in social justice organizations in these response movements.
Reconciling Eros And Agape: The English Catholic Artistic Response To Reforms, Nicole M. Coonradt
Reconciling Eros And Agape: The English Catholic Artistic Response To Reforms, Nicole M. Coonradt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the English Catholic artistic response to reforms--reforms being both internal and external to the Catholic Church--as part of the Catholic Reformation. "Response," for the purposes of this project, may be defined in terms of an "answer" in an ongoing dialogue about the Catholic position and may be seen as both conciliatory and apologetic in nature. Understanding this response is useful when we consider the role of rhetoric and poetry in society and the attendant contemporary theories thereof, in their historical context, especially the duty of the poet. The recent "revisionist" history is central to understanding art contextually. …

Emergent Worship: A Study On "Contemplation" In The Emerging Church, Filip Milosavljevic
Emergent Worship: A Study On "Contemplation" In The Emerging Church, Filip Milosavljevic
Honors Theses
Due to great interest and popularity of various contemplative practices among youth leaders, clergy, and church members across all denominational—including Seventh-day Adventism—and religious lines, this project will analyze the nature of selected Emergent contemplative practices, in particular those promulgated by the CAC. The primary goal is to find out whether “contemplation” and contemplative practices, as promoted by Richard Rohr, Cynthia Bourgeault, and their Emergent colleagues, are appropriate in Christian worship. This study will also contrast such contemplative practices and spirituality with the concept of contemplation in the Bible and in the writings of Ellen G. White. As a scientific addendum …

They Love To Tell The Story: Five Contemporary Novelists Take On The Gospels, Kevin Brown
KSU Press Legacy Project
The Virgin Mary. Joseph. Peter. Mary Magdalene. Judas Iscariot. Pontius Pilate. Jesus. In They Love to Tell the Story: Five Contemporary Novelists Take on the Gospels, Kevin Brown examines how Nikos Kazantzakis, Anthony Burgess, Norman Mailer, Jose Saramago, and Nino Ricci portray each of the major figures from the gospel stories against the backdrop of biblical and legendary lore and depictions by some other contemporary novelists. The result is a many textured tapestry of insight and reflection in which Mary encourages her son to lead a normal life; Peter is coarse and rash, loyal and treacherous; Judas may well …

The Immanent Body: A Thematic Study Of The Logic Of Immanence In Christology, Philosophy And Aesthetics, Francis J. Sanzaro Iii
Religion - Dissertations
This dissertation is comprised of two sections: 1) "The Immanent Body in Late Antiquity": an analysis of late ancient christology, Stoicism and philosophy; 2) "The Extended Body: Aesthetics": depictions of monastic bodies in late medieval, Renaissance and contemporary art.
I. The thesis of this dissertation can be stated as follows: the conditions under which immanence is thinkable in relation to bodies are found in conceptual personae. Contemporary philosopher Gilles Deleuze's concept of conceptual personae, developed in conjunction with French theorist Felix Guattari, helps navigate the complex relationship between bodies and ontology developed by these three ancient thinkers. In order to …

Translation As Blood Loss: German Lutheran And American Presbyterian Variations On A Medieval Catholic Hymn, George Faithful
Translation As Blood Loss: German Lutheran And American Presbyterian Variations On A Medieval Catholic Hymn, George Faithful
Collected Faculty Scholarship
Protestants and Catholics now sing each other’s hymns and think nothing of it. This was not always the case. Christian hymnody was once drawn along sharp sectarian lines. When, how, and why did this change? This presentation hopes to offer a tentative answer by analyzing a particular hymn, a medieval Latin Catholic poem, a 17th-century German Lutheran translation, and a number of English translations of that translation, including the dominant one by a 19th-century American Presbyterian. The phenomenon of that hymn’s translation reveals an ecumenical impulse in the form of borrowing song texts across confessional lines. The differences between the …
The Manifestation Of Biblical Community Understanding In A Facebook Community: A Qualitative Study Among Christian College Students, Paul Perkins
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Applying theoretical studies of social capital, social presence, cognitive presence, and community helps researchers understand more fully the phenomenon of online social networks. The debate has moved from the positive and negative effects of online social networks to understanding how they fit into daily life. However, do biblical community beliefs transfer to Facebook? If Facebook is considered a community, does it exhibit the characteristics of a biblical community? Through a qualitative case study design, this research explored eight Christian college students, four men and four women, from two Midwest Christian colleges, investigating their understanding of biblical community and its application …

A Promised Land In The Diaspora: Christian Religion, Social Memory, And Identity Among Banabans In Fiji, Wolfgang Kempf
A Promised Land In The Diaspora: Christian Religion, Social Memory, And Identity Among Banabans In Fiji, Wolfgang Kempf
Pacific Studies
This article explores the evolving concept of diaspora, highlighting its departure from its original religious connotations to a broader framework encompassing migration, transnationalism, and identity. While religion has often been overlooked in contemporary diaspora studies, the article argues that Christian institutions play a pivotal role in shaping identity and social organization among Pacific Islanders living abroad. Focusing on diasporic Banabans in Fiji, the study examines how Christian discourses and biblical narratives—particularly the Exodus motif—have been appropriated to articulate a collective history of displacement and survival. The article situates Pacific migration within a historical and colonial context, demonstrating how religion functions …
Reflections On Associative Word Links In Judges, Joel Kaminsky
Reflections On Associative Word Links In Judges, Joel Kaminsky
Religion: Faculty Publications
Attempts to read Judges in a unified fashion have shed much light on this book. Yet, such readings often are not fully convincing because they gloss over details that do not easily fit into the literary, theological, or ideological perspective being advanced. This essay moves in a new direction by exploring a thick web of verbal resonances that brings various distinct components within Judges into a complex literary and theological conversation. Even as this webbing draws various parts of the book into association with each other, it at the same time highlights the distinct elements of each story. While many …
