Jesus The Christ As A Jun-Zi In Confucian Perspectives, John Changjin Bai Jan 2009

Jesus The Christ As A Jun-Zi In Confucian Perspectives, John Changjin Bai

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

In this paper, I seek to understand who Jesus is, through the lenses of “jun-zi 君子” (best translated as gentleman), a discussion and comparison between the concept of personhood of the jun-zi in Confucianism perspectives and the story of Jesus in the New Testament, I believe there is the possibility and implication to present an excellent image of Jesus the Christ as a jun-zi within Confucian personhood. Jesus, his ethical norm, high moral standard and religious life are like Confucian jun-zi. If we evangelize or evaluate the concepts of traditional Chinese Confucian jun-zi, Jesus would appear as a …

Edinburgh 2010: Mission Then And Now, David A. Kerr, Kenneth R. Ross Jan 2009

Edinburgh 2010: Mission Then And Now, David A. Kerr, Kenneth R. Ross

Regnum Edinburgh Centenary Series

No one can fully understand the modern Christian missionary movement without engaging substantially with the World Missionary Conference, held at Edinburgh in 1910. As the centenary of the Conference approaches, the time is ripe to examine its meaning in light of the past century and the questions facing Christians today. This book is first to systematically examine the eight Commissions which reported to Edinburgh 1910 and gave the conference much of its substance and enduring value. It will deepen and extend the reflection being stimulated by the upcoming centenary and will kindle the missionary imagination for 2010 and beyond.

Portraits Of Resiliency : A Qualitative Study Of Appalachian Christian Women, Joy A. Butcher-Winfree

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this dissertation was to evaluate how some women in Appalachia create meaning and purpose when faced with challenges, problems, and crises and how they make it through these difficult events. The following research questions informed this research: 1) What role does spirituality play in the process of resiliency; 2) How does a relationship with a higher power enhance a woman’s ability to bounce back from difficult situations; and 3) How do some Appalachian Christian women find meaning and purpose when faced with challenges, problems and crisis and how do they make it through? Getting The Framers Wrong: A Response To Professor Geoffrey Stone, Samuel W. Calhoun Jan 2009

Getting The Framers Wrong: A Response To Professor Geoffrey Stone, Samuel W. Calhoun

Scholarly Articles

Professor Geoffrey Stone’s Essay, The World of the Framers: A Christian Nation?, seeks to state “the truth about . . . what [the Framers] believed, and about what they aspired to when they created this nation.” Doing so will accomplish Professor Stone’s main objective, helping us to understand what “the Constitution allows” on a host of controversial public policy issues. Regrettably, Professor Stone’s effort is unsuccessful. Although he clearly tried to be fair in his historical account, the Essay ultimately presents a misleading view of the Framers’ perspective on the proper relationship between religion and the state.

Mary And The Jews: The Gospels And The Early Church, Lawrence Frizzell Jan 2009

Mary And The Jews: The Gospels And The Early Church, Lawrence Frizzell

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

The intention of this essay is twofold; to extend the time period of my earlier essays on Mary and the biblical heritage and to sketch the developments in the early Church, in spite of their burdens of motifs relating to the Jewish people, so that we can understand our history with an insight into the Church's roots and prepare for a better future in Christian- Jewish relations.

The Church And The Jews In The Liturgy, Lawrence Frizzell Jan 2009

The Church And The Jews In The Liturgy, Lawrence Frizzell

Selected Works of Lawrence E. Frizzell

The Second Vatican Council developed a number of profound theological insights which have influenced the liturgy of the Roman Rite and the spirituality of the faithful. The Church's relationship with the Jewish people has implications for each local congregation's call to be good neighbors; more profoundly, a proper understanding of the Church's roots in the Jewish heritage is integral to our own self understanding.

His Final Homily: Pope John Paul Ii's Death As An Affirmation Of His Life's Message, Joesph M. Valenzano Jan 2009

His Final Homily: Pope John Paul Ii's Death As An Affirmation Of His Life's Message, Joesph M. Valenzano

Communication Faculty Publications

Every Sunday morning, a member of the Roman Catholic clergy addresses his flock after a reading from one of the Gospels. These homilies ordinarily last between 10 and 20 minutes and allow the priest an opportunity to interpret the Gospel message from that day's reading, as well as discuss how that message relates to contemporary events and issues.

During the final two months of his life, Pope John Paul II provided a longer, more powerful symbolic homily to the world. The message summarized his positions on freedom, suffering, and the dignity of human life.

Inventing A Testimony (Chapter 18 Of Jesus Girls: True Tales Of Growing Up Female And Evangelical), Melanie Springer Mock Jan 2009

Inventing A Testimony (Chapter 18 Of Jesus Girls: True Tales Of Growing Up Female And Evangelical), Melanie Springer Mock

Faculty Publications - Department of English

Excerpt: "Several months into my first year of college, I realized there was an optional worship service for students every Sunday evening and that anyone who wanted to be considered a Christian by her peers had better show up. For weeks, I had been blissfully deluded, spending my Sunday evenings running through the hills around town, then . hanging out in the dorm lobby-a lobby which was, I'll admit, eerily empty, as if the rapture had come and carried away everyone except me. Students bursting through the lobby doors on those nights always provided certain relief: I had not missed …

All For One & One For All: Understanding Servant Leadership, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

What’s a Leader to Do?

Here are some guidelines to help you balance the tension between the individual and the group.

1. Pray for God to give you wisdom from thoughts others have to share as well as your own thoughts.

2. Take each situation as a process that is unfolding, and remain open to consider the needs of the organization and the needs of the individual as these come to be understood.

3. See in every complicated leadership situation the opportunity to explore your own humility by sharing leadership with followers.

4. Recognize that in every complicated leadership situation, …

Guided By Your Secret Life, Homer Massey Jan 2009

Guided By Your Secret Life, Homer Massey

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

The soul may be thought of as that part of the personality that processes an individual’s highest values. Humanly this may also be thought of as the conscience, an integral part of the soul. This short essay suggests that a Christian has a wonderful secret life within him that must be managed to help him through the day-to-day challenges of life.
