The Role Of Human Emotion In Christian Discipleship, Alex Bryan
The Role Of Human Emotion In Christian Discipleship, Alex Bryan
Doctor of Ministry
This dissertation asks and attempts to answer the following question: What role does human emotion play in the problem of contemporary Christian discipleship and how might emotion play a provisional and productive role in its success ? The argument of this project, in response to the above question, is that recognition and recreation of human emotions is essential in corifronting the challenges of contemporary Christian discipleship. Just as the rational (left brain) component of human beings is complicit both in the spiritual pathology and redemptive potential of mankind, so to is the emotive (right brain) mind a responsible party in …
Sustaining Spiritual Leadership For The Long Haul: The Center For Spiritual Renewal At Barclay College, David O. Williams
Sustaining Spiritual Leadership For The Long Haul: The Center For Spiritual Renewal At Barclay College, David O. Williams
Doctor of Ministry
There is no higher calling in the Christian life than the call to serve as a spiritual leader within the body of Christ (pastor, music minister, missionary, etc.). While many of these leaders are functioning quite well in their respective ministries today, many others are leaving vocational ministry at an alarming rate. In section one of this document, an attempt will be made to identify some of the key factors that contribute to this current clergy crisis. A significant number of support services have emerged in recent years in an attempt to address the problem of clergy burnout. Section two …

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority
This volume continues the publication of the IAA excavations at the site of Paneas. While Volumes I and II (IAA Reports 37, 38) and the upcoming Volume III, describe the excavations in the Roman–Byzantine city’s civic center, this volume extends our knowledge to the city’s aqueduct system, cemeteries and northern suburbs, and describes the pottery, coin and glass finds from these excavations.

It Takes A Missional Order To Raise A Leader: "Order-Ing" Leadership Communities For Life Transformation And Missional Impact, Daniel L. Steigerwald
Doctor of Ministry
The times in which we live in the West grow more complex from year to year. This presents a problem, as church and para-church leaders find themselves increasingly less prepared to meet the demands of "missional leadership," that is, leadership that exemplifies and passes on the passion, practices and perspectives conducive to fostering growth in God and fruitful missionary engagement with his world.
In chapter one I identify this problem both from the vantage point of my own leadership journey and also from that of Christian leaders in general. I then propose my thesis: Amid the complexities, distractions and pressures …

Pro Rege
This speech was presented at the Christian Education Association annual convention in South Bend, Indiana, in 2007.
Erratum: This article states the following: “One quick story: Many here remember Rev. Tony Van Zanten, who ministered faithfully at Roseland, suburban Chicago, before he was called home” (38). Dr. Schaap and the editor of Pro Rege deeply regret the error. Rev. Tony Van Zanten lives in the Chicago area.
American Civil Religion: An Idea Whose Time Is Past, Frederick Mark Gedicks
American Civil Religion: An Idea Whose Time Is Past, Frederick Mark Gedicks
Faculty Scholarship
From the founding of the United States, Americans have understood loyalty to their country as a religious and not just a civic commitment. The idea of a 'civil religion' that defines the collective identity of a nation originates with Rousseau, and was adapted to the United States Robert Bellah, who suggested that a peculiarly American civil religion has underwritten government and civil society in the United States.
Leaving aside the question whether civil religion has ever truly unified all or virtually all Americans, I argue that it excludes too many Americans to function as such a unifying force in the …

The Virtue Of Profit (Mclean, Va), C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
In this speech delivered to the Workforce Ministry Group of McLean Presbyterian Church (McLean, VA), Pollard contends that profit can be considered virtuous when it allows servant leaders to invest in employees, thereby contributing to the moral and spiritual formation of human beings.

Religious Freedom: Virginia Doesn't Need A New Statute, Ellis M. West
Religious Freedom: Virginia Doesn't Need A New Statute, Ellis M. West
Political Science Faculty Publications
One would think that Virginians would be united and steadfast in their devotion to the Statute for Religious Freedom, written by Thomas Jefferson, adopted by the General Assembly in 1786, and since then praised by liberty-loving persons throughout the world. Currently, however, a group spearheaded by a few professors at Christopher Newport University and by the editor of the Religious Herald, the newspaper of the largest association of Baptists in Virginia, wants to "update" Jefferson's statute so that it guarantees religious people a "right to participate in the public forum, and express their points of view." On Jan. 24, …
