From The Ashes: Jus Post Bellum And The Emergence Of Kosovo, Matthew J. Gaudet Jan 2008

From The Ashes: Jus Post Bellum And The Emergence Of Kosovo, Matthew J. Gaudet

General Engineering

In many parts ofthe world today, when the subject of war arises, the conversation inevitably turns to the continuing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. As these two conflicts rage into their fifth and seventh years respectively and the situation on the ground seems to be deteriorating, the United States national conversation seenlS primarily concemed with a timeline for exit.

The just war tradition is not immune to this conversation. In direct response to these conflicts, scholars have, for the first time, developed criteria for justly ending and exiting a war. Unfortunately, the application ofthese criteria has thus far been limited …

Community In The Theology Of Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, Nicholas Coffman Jan 2008

Community In The Theology Of Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, Nicholas Coffman

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This work began as a term paper for an Independent Learning Project with Dr. Cahoy and Ben Durheim. From our discussions, it became clear that on a literal level, Kierkegaard’s vision of Christianity is largely individualistic in emphasis. This work critiques this assertion through a wider engagement of several texts, illustrating the seminal Christian position of Kierkegaard. The analysis begins with secondary source appraisals of Kierkegaard as theologian, to clarify this endeavor as distinct from an exclusively philosophical pursuit. Next, Kierkegaard’s major psychological understandings are addressed, revealing hidden potential for the role of community in authentic faith. Finally, this work …

Remembering To Be Faithful: The Role Of Humility In The Revitalization Of Pentecostal Churches, James O. Williams Jan 2008

Remembering To Be Faithful: The Role Of Humility In The Revitalization Of Pentecostal Churches, James O. Williams

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation addresses spiritual revitalization of Pentecostal churches. This paper's thesis is that the revitalization of Pentecostal churches must begin with the recovery of the early Pentecostals' passion and urgency.

Knowledge of the antecedents affords a clear understanding of the early Pentecostal movement. Chapter 1 examines the spiritual decline in the decades leading up to the birth of Pentecostalism. The chapter considers the causes of decline, the dynamics of renewal, and concludes by introducing key figures in restoration movements in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Chapter 2 explores the passions of the Pentecostal forerunners in their own words. …

A Glimpse Into The Missional House Churches Of America, J. D. Payne Jan 2008

A Glimpse Into The Missional House Churches Of America, J. D. Payne

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

Discussions of house churches in western contexts have been increasing over the last decade. Though one can speculate as to the reason for the interest and growth in this particular expression of the Body of Christ, few have attempted to study the present realities. For some time I heard of these simple expressions of the Church in countries throughout the world, but wondered if there were such churches in the United States that were evangelistic and involved in church planting. I wanted to know if there were more to house churches than the stereotypical small group of disgruntled believers huddling …

Island Culture: The Role Of The Blasket Autobiographies In The Preservation Of A Traditional Way Of Life, Eamon Maher Jan 2008

Island Culture: The Role Of The Blasket Autobiographies In The Preservation Of A Traditional Way Of Life, Eamon Maher

Articles

The Blasket Islands, located off the west coast of Kerry, are remarkable for having inspired a flourishing literature, mainly autobiographical in nature, which is generally acknowledged as being of great anthropological value, as well as of significant literary merit. When one considers that the islands never had a population of more than around 160 persons (with an average of closer to half that number) during the years covered by the autobiographies, the existence of such an important chronicle of the simple and at times perilous life on these Atlantic outposts is all the more noteworthy. The language spoken on the …

Buddhism, Apophasis, Truth, Mario D'Amato Jan 2008

Buddhism, Apophasis, Truth, Mario D'Amato

Faculty Publications

In this paper I will offer some reflections on one instance of apophasis in a specific Mahāyāna Buddhist doctrinal treatise, known as the Madhyāntavibhāga (“Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes,” ca. fourth century CE). I will attempt to formally distinguish such apophatic doctrines from doctrines of ineffability, and consider what apophatic doctrines might contribute to the impasse regarding “truth” which characterizes certain approaches to the comparative philosophy of religion. Since this paper is intended as a contribution to the comparative philosophy of religion, I will begin with a few remarks on the nature of that enterprise.

The Legal Cases In The Book Of Mormon, John W. Welch

Maxwell Institute Publications

The Legal Cases in the Book of Mormon begins with a discussion of important background information, including legal practices in the ancient Near East, the ideal of righteous judgment, and the legal cases recorded in the Bible. Eloquent Witness: Nibley On Himself, Others, And The Temple, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

One of the stunning aspects of Dr. Hugh Nibley's genius was his persistent sense of wonder. That trait induced him to range widely through very disparate subjects of study- all covered in volume 17 of The Collected Works of Hugh Nibley on Himself, Others, and the Temple. In this compilation of materials, most of which have been published previously outside the Collected Works volumes, Nibley explores the ancient Egyptians, the temple, the life sciences, world literature, ancient Judaism, and Joseph Smith and the Restoration. The contents of this volume illustrate the breadth of his interest through autobiographical sketches, interviews, book …
