History Of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Bishopville, South Carolina, Circa 1814-2008, John Kelley Segars, Dorothy Tedder Smith, Linda Haley Sutherland, Betty Brown Truesdale

Methodist Books

This story of Bethlehem United Methodist Church is compiled with much love and deep appreciation of those earlier dedicated Methodists who organized this Church and of those (including early church historians, newspaper editors, archives and courthouse employees) who shared information that is being used by the authors to write this revised version of her history.

While researching and recording this history, we discovered numerous church land conveyances, newspaper articles, 1878-1928 history of the Woman's Missionary Society of Bethlehem, other data that had not been recorded in prior histories, and numerous bits of information about events that occurred during 1990-2008. We …

Monotheism, Polytheism, Monolatry, Or Henotheism? Toward An Assessment Of Divine Plurality In The Hebrew Bible, Michael Heiser Jan 2008

Monotheism, Polytheism, Monolatry, Or Henotheism? Toward An Assessment Of Divine Plurality In The Hebrew Bible, Michael Heiser

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Israel’s view of God and his relationship to other divine beings in the Hebrew Bible has long been the subject of scholarly debate. The dominant critical consensus since the late nineteenth century holds that Israel’s faith evolved from polytheism or henotheism to monotheism. Passages in the Hebrew Bible that assume the existence of other gods are compared to other passages that put forth the declaration that “there are no other gods besides” the God of Israel as proof of this view. Other scholars who reject this evolutionary paradigm tend to assume passages evincing divine plurality actually speak of human beings, …

An Authentic Human Being With A 17th C. Flair: Fenelon Spiritual Letters And Existentialism, Megan Levy Jan 2008

An Authentic Human Being With A 17th C. Flair: Fenelon Spiritual Letters And Existentialism, Megan Levy

Theology Conference Papers

This is an invitation for the mind and the heart to cross the threshold into another dimension in time and explore the parallels between Existential Psychotherapy concepts and Fenelon’s Christian Spiritual Letters written 300 years ago. Christianity and Existentialism are “individualistic” approaches focused on self-awareness, self-responsibility, and ownership to facilitate personal change; both ask for commitment, and none of them offer easy ways or painless quests. Christian spiritual letters as a personal growth tool are centred on Jesus, a self-actualizer, who fits every characteristic described by Maslow.

Paul And Asceticism In 1 Corinthians 9:27a, Kent L. Yinger Jan 2008

Paul And Asceticism In 1 Corinthians 9:27a, Kent L. Yinger

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Amidst the resurgence of interest in Paul and asceticism relatively little focus has been put upon one Pauline text with seemingly obvious ascetic potential: “I beat my body” (1 Corinthians 9:27a). After a brief introduction to the discussion of asceticism and an ascetic Paul, this article will survey the Wirkungsgeschichte of this text, especially in the patristic era, engage in exegesis of 1 Corinthians 9:27a, and draw conclusions as to the relevance of the text for discussion of Pauline asceticism.

The Problem Of Prayerlessness (Chapter 35 Of Giving Ourselves To Prayer), Marykate Morse Jan 2008

The Problem Of Prayerlessness (Chapter 35 Of Giving Ourselves To Prayer), Marykate Morse

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Prayer is probably the core spiritual practice of the Christian faith. Yet, despite the example of Jesus and the early church it is often an anemic part of our lives. A common response to this reality is to label prayerlessness-not taking time to pray-a sin problem. Jesus told us to pray, so we should pray. If we are not praying, the solution is to confess and repent, and then start praying. "Start praying" usually means attending prayer groups, keeping prayer notebooks, and interceding on behalf of others during one's daily quiet time. However, in all my years of teaching prayer …
