Emmanuel "God With Us" In Suffering, E. Douglas William Jr. Jan 2008

Emmanuel "God With Us" In Suffering, E. Douglas William Jr.

Doctor of Ministry

This paper proposes a response the following question: What is the best approach for ministers to use in ministry to the suffering? The paper examines the question in light of culture in the United States in the twenty-first century. Many people face a crisis in their faith due to a misconception that God allows suffering to happen to good people. Three covenantal theories: limited retribution, telic vindication, and theocentric consolation, appear throughout the Old and New Testaments and in the history of the Church. This paper proposes theocentric consolation as the proper paradigm for ministry to those who suffer. Chapter …

An Epistle Of The Twelve, March 1842, Josh E. Probert Jan 2008

An Epistle Of The Twelve, March 1842, Josh E. Probert

BYU Studies

On March 20, 1842, ten members of the Twelve Apostles composed a long epistle to the Saints in Europe providing directives for immigration. The document reveals the way the Twelve planned to move converts from Europe to the Nauvoo area and the way resources would be provided for the Nauvoo Temple and Nauvoo House. The document also provides a window into the broader contours of Church governance during this for- mative time and the larger responsibilities of the Twelve after their return from their mission to the British Isles.

Dale Allison’S Resurrection Skepticism: A Critique, Gary R. Habermas Jan 2008

Dale Allison’S Resurrection Skepticism: A Critique, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Part 6 of Dale Allison's volume, Resurrecting Jesus: The Earliest Christian Tradition and its Interpreters, is a rare, balanced mixture of mature skepticism with a healthy respect for the relevant historical and theological data. Perhaps not since Peter Carnley's The Structure a/Resurrection Belief has there been another work on the resurrection that weaves together these contrasting elements. Yet, not only do these two texts present very different perspectives, but Allison's exhibits a far greater command of the germane historical issues, both skeptical alternative responses as well as what can be concluded from the relevant New Testament texts. Along the way, …

The Winter Of My Desolation,' Conscience And The Contradictions Of Atheism According To John Henry Newman,, Michael J. Buckley S.J.

Religious Studies

Among the historic advances bringing into realization both the promise and the menace of the nineteenth century, Friedrich Nietzsche and John Henry Newman identified a momentous reversal in religious convictions. 1Something absolutely fundamental was dying. Both discerned an irretrievable decline in the religious confidence and doctrinal commitments that had for fifteen hundred years specified the character of Christian Europe and whose dissolution constituted now for the individual believer and for the religious culture of the West a defiant, even insurmountable crisis. Both recognized that this disintegration bespoke not another episodic appearance of chronic religious alienation nor the momentary revivification …

Jesus’ Use Of Social Power In Honour–Shame Conflicts: A Model For Male–Female Interactions, Marykate Morse Jan 2008

Jesus’ Use Of Social Power In Honour–Shame Conflicts: A Model For Male–Female Interactions, Marykate Morse

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

Because social power is interpersonal, it is exercised in physical space. Edward Hall distinguishes between public, social, personal, and intimate space by the distance that individuals maintain from each other in that space. Soja describes the concept of space as either a geophysical reality, a mental-symbolic reality, or a social reality. Power is a physically perceived, socially-negotiated construct based on mental perceptions of authority and value in a group. Jesus regularly exercised his power in social settings to challenge traditional group norms. One of the norms challenged was the objectification of women in male honour-shame conflicts. In this paper I …
