The 20th Century Holiness Movement And Korean Holiness Groups, Myung Soo Park

The Asbury Journal

The Korean Christianity has been influenced by the American mission work whether its influence is good or bad. This study demonstrates how much the holiness movements in America have changed Korea Holiness churches. A schism among the American Holiness churches brought another one among Korean people; a revival in America brought another one in Korea. A theological change in American Holiness circle made the same kind of change in Korea. Therefore, we might study the Korea Holiness movement in relations with American Holiness movement.

The Root And The Flower: Siddur For Hebrew-Adventist Congregations, Jacques B. Doukhan Jan 2007

The Root And The Flower: Siddur For Hebrew-Adventist Congregations, Jacques B. Doukhan

All Books

Why a Hebrew-Adventist Service?

To offer a special worship experience that combines the joyfulness and reverence, and the sense of community of the Hebrew tradition, with our distinctive Adventist identity.

To help Christians in general, and Seventh-day Adventists in particular, recover their Hebrew roots and enrich their emotional, intellectual, and physical adoration.

To create a spiritual and liturgical environment where Jews as well as Christians can worship the same God of Israel—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who also was the God of Peter, John, and Paul—thereby relieving and transcending the Jewish-Christian tension.

Loving God As A Devoted Servant, John B. Carman Jan 2007

Loving God As A Devoted Servant, John B. Carman

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

These three papers explore important facets of a central topic in comparing Hindu and Christian traditions: human love of God, which is related to the even broader topic of divine love for human beings. I had hoped that each of the authors would make some connections with the other two papers and thereby contribute to one or more imaginary dialogues. Since they have not done so, I shall try to link the aspects of Western and Indian traditions on which they touch, giving particular attention to the one explicitly comparative paper, that by Martin Ganeri.

Integral "Samnyasa"? Adi Shankaracharya And Liberation Hermeneutics, Reid B. Locklin

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Writing in the Women's Bible Commentary, Carolyn Osiek offers five conflicting interpretations of this controversial passage and its significance for women's liberation. At one end of the spectrum stand those who insist that the text "endorses an end to sexism of every kind," a difficult view to square with other statements of the apostle Paul. At another extreme stand those who ascribe it exclusively to a future transformation at the end of time, with no contemporary relevance.

Undergraduates’ Perceptions Of Ideal Learning Environments, June Hetzel, Keith Walters Jan 2007

Undergraduates’ Perceptions Of Ideal Learning Environments, June Hetzel, Keith Walters

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Four hundred and fifty three undergraduate students were surveyed at one CCCU institution regarding perceptions of what “exists” and what they “value” related to university pedagogy, learning activities, assessments, and learning relationships. Researchers ranked students’ values and examined gaps in students’ perceptions of what students say exists at the university as compared to what they value. The highest ranked values primarily related to learning relationships, including “demonstrates Christian ethics in interactions with others” and “integrates Christian worldview in the teaching of course content.” The factor that most explained satisfaction with teaching practices was the “Methods Factor” and the single item …

"It Seems That All Nature Mourns": Sally Randall's Response To The Murder Of Joseph And Hyrum Smith, Jordan Watkins, Steven C. Harper

BYU Studies

Sally Carlisle was born in New Hampshire in 1805. She married James Randall, and they settled in Warsaw, New York, where they had two sons, George and Eli, and converted to Mormonism. They moved to Nauvoo in 1843. A collection of Sally’s letters addressed to friends and family has been preserved. The letter she wrote July 1, 1844, less than a week after the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, has a remarkable provenance (see sidebar).

The Artwork Of Ron Richmond: Catharsis No. 27 And Triplus, Josh E. Probert

BYU Studies

The artworks of Ron Richmond are christological metaphors that induce stillness and reflection. The rich colors and the juxtaposition of photo-real forms against muted, simple backgrounds draws viewers into Richmond’s sacred spaces and invites them to “meditate upon these things” (1 Tim 4:15).

Theology From A Fractured Vista: Susan Neiman’S Evil In Modern Thought, Philip J. Rossi Jan 2007

Theology From A Fractured Vista: Susan Neiman’S Evil In Modern Thought, Philip J. Rossi

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Evil in Modern Thought, Susan Neiman's account of the intellectual trajectory of modernity, employs the trope “homeless” to articulate deep difficulties that affirmations of divine transcendence and of human capacities to acknowledge transcendence face in a contemporary context thoroughly marked by fragmentation, fragility, and contingency. The “hospitality” of the Incarnation, which makes a fractured world a place for divine welcoming of the human in all its contingency and brokenness, is proposed as locus for theological engagement with Neiman's appropriation of a Kantian sense of hope as the readiness to resist evil in a world seemingly bereft of welcome.

Resurrection Of Adam's Body: The Redeeming Role Of Enoch-Metatron In 2 (Slavonic) Enoch, Andrei Orlov

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The study investigates the ritual of anointing with the oil of the resurrection found in 2 Enoch. 2 Enoch 22:9 portrays the archangel Michael anointing Enoch with delightful oil, the ointment of glory which transforms the patriarch into a celestial creature. According to some rabbinic materials this oil of the resurrection which is responsible for the change of human mortal nature into glorious state of a celestial being will come at the eschatological time from the head of the Deity.
