The Re-Cognition Of Being's Infrastructure As Self-Completion, Herbert Guenther Jan 2002

The Re-Cognition Of Being's Infrastructure As Self-Completion, Herbert Guenther

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Wholeness as indivisible and the human being's connectedness with it are the abiding themes

of the Buddhist experience-rooted and process-oriented thinking that goes by the name of

rDzogs-chen. From its basically holistic point of view, the human being is a sub-whole,

similar to a variation on a musical theme. From another point of view, however, based on

the confusion of a compacted (and hence de-compactable) totality with wholeness, the human

being is seen as being a reality that is internally divided and feels uncertain about who/

what he really is. Together, the intolerable feelings of being divided and uncertain cause …

Lumignosis, Michael G. Mitchell

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Photography can compress what moves through eternity into the appearance of a single moment. Eternity is always willing to participate; light is its favorite son. Light is always ready ro befriend the sensitive photographer and to induce metacomprehensive wonder. Truth has always come to me through my eyes. What I call "greater truth'' comes as poetry sung by the voice of light.

Embodied Light, Chris Mcdonough

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Underwater photography triggers new ways of experiencing space, time, and being. In the seemingly boundless liquid space, the self expands and focused attention induces intense clarity of the present moment and of our basic nakedness. This portfolio seeks to capture the primal embodied experience of weightless energy and the unceasing dance of light, the creator/ destroyer.

Transpersonal Psychology As A Scientific Field, Harris Friedman Jan 2002

Transpersonal Psychology As A Scientific Field, Harris Friedman

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The importance of the development of transpersonal psychology as a science is considered. Arguments from romanticism, scientism, and constructionism that challenge this possibility are countered. A distinction is drawn between the field of transpersonal psychology as a science and the broader area known as transpersonal studies that may legitimately use scientific or nonscientific methods. The concepts of transpersonal phenomena and transcendent noumena are delineated, the latter being seen as outside of the purview of science. The benefits of embracing a scientific approach are contrasted to a number of epistemological alternatives. The scientific approach is forwarded for its potential contribution towards …

[Review Of The Book Introduction To The New Testament, Vol. 2: History And Literature Of Early Christianity, By H. Koester], Rubén R. Dupertuis

Religion Faculty Research

The publication of this book completes the second edition of Helmut Koester’s important two-volume introduction to early Christian literature and history, published originally in 1982. Like the second edition of the first volume, which appeared in 1995, this edition seeks to make current the now classic and well-known introductory volume, while maintaining its structure and organization. After covering the formation of the canon, text critical issues and an all too brief introduction to methods—only source, form, tradition, narrative and rhetorical criticism are discussed, the latter two being new to this edition—texts are discussed in chronological and geographical sequence, beginning with …

Live To Tell, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2002

Live To Tell, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In recent years, countless Christians have found evangelism a difficult and even baffling scriptural mandate. Those we encounter, particularly young people, are often entirely unfamiliar with the basics of the Gospel. Traditional means of communicating the faith, from cold-calling to mass-mailings, simply no longer speak the language of the culture.

Brad Kallenberg recognizes that evangelism, even in our own backyard, has become a cross-cultural task. Like missionaries serving in foreign countries, we must become "students of the host culture." Much more than a "sinner's prayer," conversion requires a change of social identity.

Indeed, becoming a follower of Christ involves gaining …

Book Of Mormon Stories Diglot Reader On Computer, Neal S. Harmon

Theses and Dissertations

This report describes the design, development, and evaluation of a computer-based diglot reader of the Book of Mormon Stories of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Di means two and glot means language, thus a diglot reader combines two languages into one reader in order to teach a person to read in a new language. The program, which runs on both Macintosh and Windows computer platforms, contains fifteen chapters of the Book of Mormon Stories and introduces about four hundred Spanish words. This report includes a literature review on the diglot method and related materials, a description of …

The Effects Of Computer-Based Metacognitive Strategy Training For Adult Second Language Learners, Heidi D. Hyte

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a metacognitive language learning strategy training program that was implemented into computer-assisted language learning (CALL) software on second language learners' independent use of metacognition and language learning strategies (LLS). Questions under investigation included what effect this metacognitive training had on learners' independent use of metacognition, the differences in use of metacognitive strategies between fast and slow language learners, and the effect of learners' perceptions of metacognition on their use of LLS and specific metacognitive strategies.

The subjects included 239 missionaries learning Spanish as a second language at the Missionary …

Time As Motivation: Selected Theories As Compared To Modern Revelation, Jill Judkins Jan 2002

Time As Motivation: Selected Theories As Compared To Modern Revelation, Jill Judkins

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes that human beings by virtue of living in each new present moment are motivated to develop strategies to secure the best possible outcome in their lived experience. A personal account of the phenomenological experience of time is presented and a brief history is given. The implications associated with being thrown into the present moment make apparent the weaknesses of the current assumptions that the slices of the present moment form a continuity of past and future and create a coherent synthesis of life. The assumption that human beings are intentional, goal-directed, and prone to seek meaning in …

Balance And Conflict: Variation In Attaining Work-Family Fit Among A Homogeneous Population, Laura C. Koch Jan 2002

Balance And Conflict: Variation In Attaining Work-Family Fit Among A Homogeneous Population, Laura C. Koch

Theses and Dissertations

The concept of work-family fit has recently emerged in the work and family literature, comparable to work-family balance in that it represents interactions between work and family, and yet distinct from balance in its sense of universal ownership and responsibility. Using Barnett's (1998) model of the work-social system interface as a framework, this study explores the relationship between and predictive factors of work-family fit and work-family balance. Data are from a survey of Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management (MSM) graduate school alumni (n = 273). Findings indicate that fit and balance are indeed two separate constructs, with fit …

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

It is a privilege to be here with you at this annual gathering to explore matters of consequence affecting our churches at the beginning of this new millennium. I feel honored to be invited into the ongoing conversation of the Institute of Liturgical Studies. I've had opportunities to cross paths with many in this Lutheran family through associations at the Liturgical Conference, the North American Academy of Liturgy, and Notre Dame, and all have been positive and enriching experiences. My contacts have served to deepen my appreciation of the strong commitment of the Lutheran churches to promoting life-giving worship …

Religious Conversions: An Indian Christian Point Of View, Michael Amaladoss Jan 2002

Religious Conversions: An Indian Christian Point Of View, Michael Amaladoss

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The phenomenon of conversions as changing one's religious affiliation has become an issue for lively discussion and even controversy in India today. Some do not see the need for them. others are ready to tolerate them, but decry the use of allurement or force. Force need not be physical: it could be psychological, social or even spiritual. Democracy is a game of numbers. Therefore the increase in the numbers of one religious group becomes a political problem, when religion has become a factor in politics. Some would like to keep religion a private affair that should not get mixed up …
