Contemporary Biblical Instruction For The Early 21st Century: A Ten-Year Plan For Endurance Ministries, Inc., Jon P. Swanson Apr 2002

Contemporary Biblical Instruction For The Early 21st Century: A Ten-Year Plan For Endurance Ministries, Inc., Jon P. Swanson

Doctor of Ministry

The purpose of this dissertation is to present a biblical, historical and personal theology on the theme of eschatological deception with the intent of serving the people of God in Jesus Christ through educational ministries that address this concern in a balanced, contemporary manner. Given Christendom's universal epistemological allegiances, a biblical theology is first presented. The Word of God continues to be that blessed lamp unto our path. After a simple exegetical consideration of key pertinent passages that speak to this theme of deceit, a brief but sufficient historical sketch of specific end-time themes relating to deception will follow. Both …

Woven On The Loom Of Time: Many Faiths And One Divine Purpose By M. Darrol Bryant, Philip Novak Apr 2002

Woven On The Loom Of Time: Many Faiths And One Divine Purpose By M. Darrol Bryant, Philip Novak

Collected Faculty Scholarship

"An important voice in interreligious dialogue for over twenty years. Professor Bryant has given us a fine little book on one of it biggest questions: how to understand the ineluctable plurality of the world's faiths. John Hick, a beacon in the field, has shown that tacklers of this question fall into one of two groups: naturalistic interpreters of religion who deny the reality of the supernatural but see religions as culturally varied sets of universally necessary psychological and social coping mechanisms, or religious interpreters of religion (like Hick) who, even while admitting the cogency of aspects of the naturalistic interpretation, …

Looking Ahead At Catholic Higher Ed, Gerard V. Bradley Apr 2002

Looking Ahead At Catholic Higher Ed, Gerard V. Bradley

Journal Articles

Here is what we got. The people in charge -- faculty, college administrators, trustees, other intellectual elites, and (judging by what they do) the bishops -- do not believe what they need to believe to restore Catholic education to the colleges: that a Catholic education is better because the faith is true. This I call the Indispensable Conviction. It is the pearl of great price. Our leaders no longer possess it. And, without a Catholic education, our magnificent campuses are like whited sepulchers.

Is the status quo really so dire? What does the next generation portend? Can demand for …

Probabilistic Record Linkage For Genealogical Research, John Lawson, David White, Brenda Price, Ryan Yamagata Apr 2002

Probabilistic Record Linkage For Genealogical Research, John Lawson, David White, Brenda Price, Ryan Yamagata

BYU Studies

With increased interest in family history research, there is a great need for improvement in procedures for generating genealogical information. One of the most time-consuming parts of the work is searching through records (such as civil records, church records, census records, immigration records, wills, deeds, and certificates, of births, marriages, and deaths) for information about an individual. When multiple records are searched, an individual may appear numerous times. Each of these occurrences may contain identical or unique information about the individual. More complete information (such as pedigree) can be constructed for an individual by combining or linking all the records …

“The Great And Dreadful Day Of The Lord”: The Anatomy Of An Expression, Dana M. Pike Apr 2002

“The Great And Dreadful Day Of The Lord”: The Anatomy Of An Expression, Dana M. Pike

BYU Studies

Speaking of the last days, the Lord declared through the ancient Israelite prophet Malachi that Elijah would return "before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord" (Mal. 4:5). And through the prophet Joel, the Lord foretold signs in the heavens "before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come" (Joel 2:31). Jesus' Second Coming is the "day of the Lord" referred to in these prophecies. Many Latter0day Saints interpret the phrase "the great and dreadful [or terrible] day of the Lord" to mean the Lord's Second Coming will be "great," or good and desirable, …

Photograph Of Children Traveling To The Salt Lake Temple Dedication, 1893, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel, Marc Alain Bohn

BYU Studies

In early 1893, the Latter-day Saints eagerly anticipated the dedication of the Salt Lake Temple, the culmination of more than forty years of effort and struggle. To allow as many Saints as possible to participate, President Wilford Woodruff announced that a series of dedicatory sessions would be held. To accommodate the many Sunday School children who had "donated of their means to assist in building the Salt Lake Temple... and [had] expressed a desire to visit the Temple at its dedication," the First Presidency set aside April 21 and 22 for the youth of the Church to visit the temple. …

Recent Developments In The Balkans: Summary And Comment, James R. Payton Jr.

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

In this paper, I will summarize several reports about achievements by United Nations organizations and the Kosovo Force [hereafter KFOR] in the Balkans during 2001. My summary will also include, from the same period, other reports about areas of concern in which these organizations have shown scant interest, despite pleas from leaders and representatives of the peoples in the region. The latter resulted in an unusual letter from the head of the Keston Institute in which he reflected on some of the failures, a letter from which I will present extended portions. Following that, I will add some reflections of …
