"Give It All Up And Follow Your Lord": Mormon Female Religiosity, 1831-1843, Janiece L. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1750s American women have flocked to churches. Women have consistently been the majority in church populations. Religion was the central motivation of the female life experience. Likewise, women comprised a significant portion of the membership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in its first decade. There exists little historical analysis of the contribution and experience of these women as a whole. As a result of this lack of research some historians have made erroneous assumptions of patriarchal oppression and a lack of commitment on the part of early Mormon women. This project closely examines the …

Morality, Religion, And Public Bioethics: Shifting The Paradigm For The Public Discussion Of Embryo Research And Human Cloning, Brian Stiltner

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Public ethics bodies play a major role in the development of public policies that govern scientific research and health care.' Their tasks include weighing the ethical ramifications of forms of research, educating the public about the research and its likely benefits, and recommending directions for institutional practices and legal policies. Much debate about public ethics bodies has concerned the mode and level of their ethical reasoning. Should public ethics bodies develop substantive moral arguments on issues that are subject to widely divergent moral and religious interpretations, such as the status of the human embryo? To develop such arguments would, of …

Leaders Pray With The Assembly, E Louise Williams Jan 2001

Leaders Pray With The Assembly, E Louise Williams

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

I wonder what it was that prompted the disciples' request. Had they watched Jesus praying, as was his custom, in a place apart and then seen him come back somehow changed-more refreshed, more serene, more focused, more disturbed? Had they overheard Jesus praying-the intimate conversation, the wrestling and struggle, the thanksgiving and praise, the intercessions? Had they remembered some admonition or invitation to pray? Did their own spirits feel dry and empty? Did they know some longing deep inside for a closer communion with the one Jesus called Abba? Was there in them some joy or anguish that needed …

Viewpoint: Dialogue: A Call To Friendship, Kenneth Cracknell

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In the past twelve months we have lost three great figures from the active list of participants in Hindu-Christian dialogue: Wilfred Cantwell Smith (1926-2000), Ninian Smart (1927-2001), and Eric J. Sharpe (1933-2000). It is my keen sense of an ending of an era that leads to the reflections in this Viewpoint.
