12 | Excavations At Efrata: A Burial Ground From The Intermediate And Middle Bronze Ages, Rivka Gonen

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This volume presents the results of the 1979 excavations at the site of Efrata, a hill on the Hebron–Jerusalem road. On the summit is a tumulus, and burial grounds of shaft tombs on the slopes were in use during the Intermediate Bronze Age (IBA) and Middle Bronze Age II (MB II). The hill was apparently an isolated cemetery intensively used by semi-nomadic pastoralists. The shaft tombs were first hewn during IBA, and after a short gap (MB I), reused in MB II. The pottery and small finds are presented, and analysis of the human remains indicates that the burials in …

Russia's Other "Mormons": Their Origins And Relationship To The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Eric A. Eliason, Gary Browning Jan 2001

Russia's Other "Mormons": Their Origins And Relationship To The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Eric A. Eliason, Gary Browning

BYU Studies

When Mormon missionaries entered Russia in 1990, they were astonished to hear about "Mormon" settlements already existing in the Samara region. Other evidence of Mormonism appeared: for example, locals used the term "Mormon crosses" to describe a unique style of crucifixes in cemeteries. In this article, the authors delve into the questions of whether or not sects with ties to mainstream Mormonism existed in pre-perestroika Russia or if unrelated groups earned the nickname "Mormon" for living in unusual family arrangements, similar to polygamy. Using data gathered from Latter-day Saint missionaries who served in Russia in the late 1990s as a …

Edward L. Hart: A Conversation About Poetry, Casualene Meyer Jan 2001

Edward L. Hart: A Conversation About Poetry, Casualene Meyer

BYU Studies

Poet Edward L. Hart wrote the lyrics to one of Mormonism's favorite hymns, "Our Savior's Love." As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hart gives his thoughts on the relationship between praise and poetry and how even secular poems can capture a sense of worship. He also discusses the inspiration behind subjects he's addressed in poetry, including nature and war; the background of some of his compositions; and his influences. He describes the power of poetic language this way: "The feel for human truths goes hand in hand with the language and all that the …

Voice Lessons, Melissa Helquist Jan 2001

Voice Lessons, Melissa Helquist

BYU Studies

In this contest-winning personal essay, the author describes the challenge of undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer and coping with lasting scars, including an extra "smile" on her throat where an incision was made and a voice that functions only some of the time. She writes, "I smell the rainwater as it moves around the tires, the earthiness of smashed worms, and everything cold and soulful. The day says something to me, and I wish I could say something back." Using compelling imagery, she conveys what it's like to express herself through the calculated means of writing and playing the viola …

‘God Writes Straight With Crooked Lines’: Eros, Agape And The Witness Of Glory. An Encounter Between The Philosophy Of Emmanuel Lévinas And Feminist Liberation Theology, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2001

‘God Writes Straight With Crooked Lines’: Eros, Agape And The Witness Of Glory. An Encounter Between The Philosophy Of Emmanuel Lévinas And Feminist Liberation Theology, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

In the encounter between Levinas’ ethical metaphysics and feminist liberation theology, there is a divide between eros and agape. Levinas takes a grave view of agape in terms of one’s human responsibility that must always come before one’s freedom and self-concern. In response to a feminist liberation theological perception of eros, the article will engage Levinas’ uncompromising proclamation of disinterested love. It is a “crooked road” one follows along the journey of disinterestedness. Yet, perhaps by the very service of love, the wisdom of love will leads us straight to hearing the word of God in the face of the …

11 | The Al-Ṣubayba (Nimrod) Fortress: Towers 11 And 9, Moshe Hartal

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This volume presents the results of the 1993 excavations in two towers at the impressive medieval ‘Al-Subayba (Nimrod) fortress in the Golan Heights, on the southern slopes of Mt. Hermon. It was built by the Ayyubids in the 13th century with the purpose of guarding a major access route to Damascus against armies coming from the west. It was later rebuilt as a palace and mosque by the Mamluks, and finally destroyed by an earthquake. The excavations cleared Tower 11 to facilitate the exit route to the postern gate. The history and building technology of the fortress are discussed.

13 | Tel Te’O: A Neolithic, Chalcolithic, And Early Bronze Age Site In The Ḥula Valley, Emanuel Eisenberg, Avi Gopher, Raphael Greenberg

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This multi-level site in the Ḥula Valley revealed a rare pre- and proto-historic sequence extending from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period (PPNB), through the Pottery Neolithic period (PN), until it was finally abandoned in the Early Bronze Age II; it was again occupied during medieval times. The abundant water resources were the probable reason for the continued settlement here, despite the difficulties presented by the marshy environment.

The settlements were apparently small villages based on simple agriculture and husbandry throughout their existence, representing local variations of the known cultures of the various periods. The Chalcolithic settlement shows affinities with the Golan …

Restoring The Juridical Image: Apologia For Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Joseph R. Blaney Jan 2001

Restoring The Juridical Image: Apologia For Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Joseph R. Blaney

Faculty Publications - Communications

Image restoration theory is used to discover that Holy Cross Father James Tunstead Burthchaell's defense of the Papal Apostolic Constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae was ineffective. Although he used attacks on accusers appropriately, his strategies of denial and transcendence were in conflict. He also failed to adequately address the accusation that the nature of American college charters make the American bishops' application of the document impossible. Finally, though perhaps through no fault of his own, he was "preaching to the choir. " The study sheds further light on the role of transcendence in religious image repair.

The Unreliable Narrator Of Job, James W. Watts Jan 2001

The Unreliable Narrator Of Job, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

This essay by James W. Watts provides analysis on the book of Job, questioning previous interpretations of its narrative. Watts also compares the book of Job's narrative style to that of modern and historical authors. Watts argues that the author of the book of Job employed an unreliable narrator in the form of an omniscient charatcer, which attacked literative conventions of the time, but ultimately proved difficult for readers to understand.

Regulation Of Religious Proselytism In The United States, Howard O. Hunter, Polly J. Price Jan 2001

Regulation Of Religious Proselytism In The United States, Howard O. Hunter, Polly J. Price

Faculty Articles

This article will consider various aspects of the U.S. legal system that affect proselytism. Although the United States has had a longstanding constitutional guarantee of the “free exercise” of religion, there are nonetheless significant constraints upon free exercise directly relating to proselytism. Some legal commentators, including Douglas Laycock, have argued that our decentralized system of government leads to insufficient protection of religious liberty, especially for religious minorities. Most case law on the subject in the United States, as well as most attempts to regulate behavior by ordinance or statute, have developed in response to groups or individuals that are outside the …
