Where Africa Meets Europe: Afro-Colonial Influences As Seen In The Tradition Of The Mirrored Devils Of Panama, Elizabeth Rhodes
Where Africa Meets Europe: Afro-Colonial Influences As Seen In The Tradition Of The Mirrored Devils Of Panama, Elizabeth Rhodes
Textual Resources
The Republic of Panama is rich with folklore traditions which include as many different kinds of devils as there are provinces. Diablos sucios (dirty devils) and grandiablos (grand devils) can be seen in festivals across the country. Less visible are the diablos de espejo, or devils of the mirrors, which dance each year in the village of Escobal for the celebration of Corpus Christi. The dance movement performed throughout the day and the culminating drama which occurs in the local Catholic church at the end of day demonstrate a clear melding of African and Spanish colonial influences.

100 Years Of African Missions: Essays In Honor Of Wendell Broom, Stanley E. Granberg
100 Years Of African Missions: Essays In Honor Of Wendell Broom, Stanley E. Granberg
ACU Brown Library Monograph Series
The wide-ranging essay collection is organized into four main sections. Section I introduces Wendell Broom. Secton II is "God's Call to a Continent: People and Places." Section III is "Mission Strategies and Issues." Section IV, is entitled "Concluding Thoughts" and shares some concluding thoughts on the future of African missions and the African church. The final chapter offers a speech by Wendell Broom from 1997 to 178 Nigerian evangelists and church leaders which challenged them (and us) to fill in the unevangelized gaps of Africa with a deliberate church-planting strategy to join the churches of West and East Africa by …

Does The Black Church In West Virginia Speak With A Prophetic Voice?: A Sociological Analysis Of The Black Church As An Agent For Social Change, James Lewis Patterson
Does The Black Church In West Virginia Speak With A Prophetic Voice?: A Sociological Analysis Of The Black Church As An Agent For Social Change, James Lewis Patterson
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This research examines the function of the black church in African American Society in general, and its function in the African American community in West Virginia in particular. Determining what the black church sees as its overall mission is my primary concern. Specifically, the research examines the relationship between themes that emerge from black pastor’s personal ministry philosophies, and themes that appear in priestly ministry and prophetic ministry. Determining whether the black church views its primary mission as (priestly) caring for the spiritual needs of its congregation, or (prophetic) calling for changes in societal structures that foster oppression and racism …

The purpose of this study is to sketch the positive and negative dimensions in the Latin liturgy of the Church's relationship to Judaism and the Jewish people during the period prior to the sixteenth century. Introduction - Misogyny And Religion Under Analysis Masterplot And Counterthesis In Tension, Diane Jonte-Pace
Religious Studies
In this work, I expose the shadowy presence of this non-Oedipal counterthesis in the cultural texts on religion. My sources are not only Freud's four major "cultural texts," Totem and Taboo, The Future of an Illusion, Civilization and its Discontents, and Moses and Monotheism, but also some of his shorter writings related to religion and mythology ("Medusa's Head" and "The Theme of the Three Caskets," for example), and some of his writings which address religious themes and issues only indirectly (such as "Thoughts for the Times on War and Death" and The Interpretation of Dreams). All of these are "cultural …

Coach Odle's Full Court Press: Taylor University & Sports Evangelism, Jessica Rousselow-Winquist, Alan H. Winquist
Books by Taylor faculty, staff, and administrators
The year 2002 will mark the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Venture for Victory (VV) by Don Odle, former basketball coach at Taylor University. Coach Odle's Full Cort Press describes this man's role as the central figure in the unfolding early development of sports evangelism which began with a simple phone call in February 1952. Despite daunting obstacles, Coach Odle successfully displayed "the power of one" by seizing the opportunity to bring a Christian basketball team to East Asia during the summer of 1952. From that humble beginning, VV's fame gradually spread. "The power of one" was transformed into …
