Speaking Of Liturgy: Education And Fonnation Through And For Worship, Dorothy C. Bass Jan 1999

Speaking Of Liturgy: Education And Fonnation Through And For Worship, Dorothy C. Bass

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

On Palm Sunday eighteen days ago I paid a visit to the country of my youth. I was visiting my parents on the East Coast and so on that day I worshiped with them at their church, First Presbyterian. I've never belonged to that particular congregation, but the denominational ethos was familiar. Visiting my family of origin, I had reentered my denomination of origin as well.

You Have To Wear Something, Susan R. Briehl Jan 1999

You Have To Wear Something, Susan R. Briehl

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

I begin with scripture. Where else could one start when invited to speak about preaching and its power of formation in the lives of hearers? How else can preaching shape a people for the living of this particular and peculiar life to which Jesus calls us, except we tum to scripture, tell its stories, sing its songs, cry its laments, pray its prayers, enter its wisdom, and taste the life it bears? We have no other word to proclaim than the promise of God, the mystery of God's unfailing love for the world revealed and offered to us in …

"Hearers Of The Word": Luke's Gospel As Sacramental Formation For A Liturgical Community, Arthur A. Just Jr. Jan 1999

"Hearers Of The Word": Luke's Gospel As Sacramental Formation For A Liturgical Community, Arthur A. Just Jr.

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

It is privilege to return to the Institute of Liturgical Studies after a long absence, especially on a subject that has consumed me in one way or another over the last fifteen years. I am very grateful to the advisory council for assigning me a topic that develops the biblical foundations of the catechumenate. My doctoral work on Emmaus, my vocation as professor of exegesis and pastoral theology, my participation in the ELCA and LCMS working groups on the catechumenate, as well as my participation in the Missouri Synod's efforts to develop its own catechumenal process, have all contributed …

Some Early Adams County Communities, Their Churches, And Church Lands, Charles H. Glatfelter Jan 1999

Some Early Adams County Communities, Their Churches, And Church Lands, Charles H. Glatfelter

Adams County History

The earliest European settlers in today's Adams county were basically a religious people. While probably most of them should not be described as particularly pious, they did have the fear of the Lord in their hearts and wanted to have access to the services of some religious organization, either the one to which they were accustomed in Europe or one with which they had affiliated in America. If they belonged to groups such as the Quakers, Mennonites, or Brethren, it was easy for them to develop internally the leadership necessary to function successfully as a religious community. If they were …

The Return Of The Will: Jonathan Edwards And The Possibilities Of Free Will, Allen C. Guelzo Jan 1999

The Return Of The Will: Jonathan Edwards And The Possibilities Of Free Will, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

If certain national cultures seem to own certain great problems of the mind, then freedom of the will seems to be the American problem. This is not just because of the sheet stupifying bulk of what Americans have written on this problem over the past 300 years, from Benjamin Franklin to Daniel Dennett, from Quaker prophetesses in Vermont to prairie lawyers in Illinois. In the most fundamental sense, freedom of the will has been an American possession because it forms a cognate philosophical discourse to that most fundamental of all American ideas, that if political and civil liberty. To speak …

What Are The Main Boundaries For The Evangelical Church And How Can We Best Address Our Major Issues?, Elmer L. Towns

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

The following question will give direction to this paper. How far into the study of secular leadership can the church go to determine biblical church leadership (the John Maxwell leadership question)? How far into marketing can the church go to determine methods of communicating the church message (the George Barna marketing question)? How far can the church go in stretching its Sunday gathering to accommodate unsaved clientele (the Bill Hybels seeker question)? How far can the church go in heeding intuitive authority apart from biblical revelation (the C. Peter Wagner New Apostolic question)? How far can the church go in …

Parting The Veil: The Visions Of Joseph Smith, Alexander L. Baugh

God granted to the Prophet Joseph the gift of visions. Joseph received so many that they became almost commonplace for him. The strength and knowledge Joseph received through these visions helped him establish the Church.
