Vanity In Human Life-A Comparative Study Of The Role Of Hebel In Qoheleth And Wu In The Philosophical Thought Of Wang Bi, Samuel Hsiao-Yung Liu May 1999

Vanity In Human Life-A Comparative Study Of The Role Of Hebel In Qoheleth And Wu In The Philosophical Thought Of Wang Bi, Samuel Hsiao-Yung Liu

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The aim of this study is to increase the mutual understanding between the Old Testament and ancient Chinese thought. The methodology is both cross-cultural and exegetical. Without the effort of exegesis, an understanding of hebel would be colored by one's own assumptions and prejudices. The same thing is true of ancient Chinese philosophy. The concept of wu was first discussed not by Wang Bi but by Lao Zia (in about the fifth century B.C.E.), the founder of Daoism. A$ a re-interpreter of wu, Wang-Bi developed the original meaning of Lao Zi and increased a new spirit for Daoism, Confucianism and …

John 6 And The Lord's Supper, Jon Bischof May 1999

John 6 And The Lord's Supper, Jon Bischof

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis ventures to reopen an old argument on ground which has been a "no man's land" for Lutherans for nearly 500 years. There is a tradition within Lutheranism of interpreting John 6:51-59 as having no reference whatsoever to the Eucharist. This tradition within Lutheranism can rightly claim the support of Luther who said, "it [the sixth chapter of John] does not refer to the sacrament in a single syllable". Naturally, no confessional Lutheran wants to find himself in disagreement with Luther. We would always rather defend his views when they are maligned. But Luther corrected his own views many …

"An Evaluation Of Praise Music As A Genre For Incorporation Into Lutheran Worship", Randy Schultz Apr 1999

"An Evaluation Of Praise Music As A Genre For Incorporation Into Lutheran Worship", Randy Schultz

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

Luther was truly a great liturgist. Along with his reform of the Mass, which included his Formula Missae and his Deutsche Messe, he also produced two baptismal rites, an Order of Marriage, an Order for Confession, a German and Latin Litany, and an Ordination Rite. He also contributed commentary on worship in general, wrote several hymns, and produced music. For the purpose of this project we will focus primarily on his reform of the Mass and his selection of hymns.

Stewardship Educational Program Based On The Lukan Pericopes (Pentecost Season - Series C), Glen Borhart

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

This Major Applied Project seeks to enable the members of the congregation to grow in the stewardship of all that the Lord has entrusted to their care. Through regular and ongoing scriptural education the members of the congregation will mature in their faith. As faith grows, Christian stewardship grows. The scope of this Major Applied Project is limited, yet the principles utilized here will serve as a model for any pastor or congregation to better implement a program of year-round stewardship education. By its connection to the weekly Gospel readings, the program addresses the Christian's role as steward in the …

From Violence To Salvation: Toward A Method Of Cult Study With The Branch Davidians And Aum Shinrikyo, Brian Nowicki '99 Apr 1999

From Violence To Salvation: Toward A Method Of Cult Study With The Branch Davidians And Aum Shinrikyo, Brian Nowicki '99

Honors Projects

Since the People's Temple massacre in Jonestown, Guyana in 1978 that resulted in at least 900 dead by either suicide or murder, cults have occupied a ominous position in the consciousness of popular culture and academic study, ranging from accusations of brainwashing by psychopathic leaders to stereotypical communes comprised of the dysfunctional dregs of society to simple dismissal by academics concerned with the serious study of religion. Cults in contemporary popular culture are a distinctly ''unpopular" phenomena, to borrow David Bromley's word. Certainly, the word cult itself would seem to conjure up notions of mass suicide and brainwashing. Yet how …

Holy Baptism’S Liturgy : What Is Extolled In Ones And Threes?, Jonathan Bontke Apr 1999

Holy Baptism’S Liturgy : What Is Extolled In Ones And Threes?, Jonathan Bontke

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

The following is a study of the historical usage of single and triple immersion / sprinkling practices through the first twelve centuries A.D. The questions at hand are: 1) Has either practice historically been predominant 2) What doctrine is informing each practice? 3) Is there a specific text of Scripture informing each practice? 4) How does this study resource us in our current practice?

The Latin expression, "Lex orandi, lex credendi" has for centuries encapsulated the truth that liturgical practice serves a looking glass into the worshiper's theology. It is the purpose of this study to use baptismal liturgies as …
