Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The aim of a meeting of people representing different philosophies and confessions is, first of all, to bear witness of one's faith and one's hope. Such witness is one of the best ways to rid groups of mutual prejudice, which only leads to distrust and enmity. It is impossible, however, to bear witness without making an attempt to understand the other. In speaking of Judaism and Orthodox Christianity, I would like to begin the discussion by referring to the paper by Dr. Jonathan Sacks, the Chief Rabbi of Great Britain. This paper was read at the annual conference of the …

Shall The Twain Ever Meet?: On The Cancellation Of The June 1997 Meeting Of The Pope And The Patriarch Of Moscow, Ralph Della Cava
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
At the start of 1998, rumors - as well as denials - are once again flying of an imminent, historic meeting between the Pope of Rome and the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. To put that prospect into perspective, the present article explores the 10 June 1997 decision of the Holy Synod, the powerful interim governing body of the Russian Orthodox Church, to cancel the previously scheduled encounter of the two church leaders later that month. It also examines differing explanations offered for that decision and the background to some of the continuing misunderstandings between the two confessions.
On Being Agents Of God's Peace: Relationship And Roles Of The Roman Catholic Church In Croatia And The Serbian Orthodox Church In Ethnic Conflicts In Former Yugoslavia, Tatjana Peric
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Former Yugoslavia was a small country on the Balkan peninsula in south-east Europe - one of the most ethnically, linguistically, and religiously complicated areas of the world. Its peoples have gained dark fame for the first time in their history during the second decade of the twentieth century, causing the first world-wide war ever. The other event that brought the area into the spotlight was the civil war in Croatia and Bosnia, two of the six former Yugoslav republics - the others are Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia. The civil strife, lasting from 1991 to the end of 1995, was …

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Today Orthodox religiosity includes, as an almost inseparable component, a struggle against Catholics and Protestants, an attempt to expose them as enemies of our faith and of Russia, as well as a complete rejection of ecumenism and of any openness towards other confessions. The very term "ecumenism" has become pejorative and an accusation of affinity towards it is seen as evidence of a certain betrayal of Orthodoxy. It is a given that our relations with Christians of other confessions have not always been smooth, we do not understand each other in everything, certain elements of Catholic or Protestant theology are …
