Mary, Mother And Model For Family Life In The Thought Of Chiara Lubich And The Experience Of The Focolare Movement, Edward L. Looney

Flourishing in the Church prior to and following the Second Vatican Council were ecclesial movements such as Focolare, Communion and Liberation, and Schoenstatt. Founded by charismatic leaders, a particular characteristic of each is their unique expression of Marian devotion. Chiara Lubich, foundress of the Focolare Movement, recognized Mary as the Mother and Model of the movement, and encouraged members to become repetitions of Mary in the world. The writings of Lubich lend themselves to the discovery of a familial spirituality, applicable to members and non-members of the movement alike. The beauty of the Virgin-Mother gives spiritual life to her children. In that regard, this article will explore the writings of some of the Church Fathers, the Marian psalter attributed to St. Bonaventure, and the theology-of-the-body audiences of Pope St. John Paul II to show how Mary is mother of the spiritual life and the exemplar of the life of the elect.

"I am the mother of fair love, and fear, and knowledge, and holy hope: I therefore, being eternal, am given to all my children which are named of him." (Sirach 24:18)

Scholarly literature about Western Art is silent on the iconographic inclusion of the Virgin nursing the Christ Child in images of the Holy Family. This paper explores two interpretations of Mary nursing in Holy Family scenes and how the Instrumentum Laboris for the Synod on the Family (2015-16) elucidates God’s plan for the family as revealed in these depictions.

Broadly, I propose to respond to the following question: What does the unique spousal relationship of Mary and Joseph have to teach families and individuals about the nature of marriage and conjugal love, especially in Christian marriage? While the circumstances of their particular relationship and calling might seem too extraordinary to appear relevant for recent thinking about marriage and family life, I will argue that it is precisely in view of the unique features of their spousal relationship that Mary and Joseph can be appreciated as exemplary for married life, even in modern times.

This presentation is built on my own catechizing experience and on the extensive research behind my STL thesis that shows the place of Mary in catechetical materials from the mid-1950s to the turn of the millennium. It is intended to provide scholars of Mary with an overview of the catechetical side of current Marian trends in the United States and, ultimately, to the Marian content in the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults (July 2006, fourth printing, September 2000), and to the current efforts to train catechetical leaders nationally and on the local levels of diocese and parish.

On this fortieth anniversary of Marialis Cultus, we wish to commemorate Paul VI and Ignacio Calabuig, both of whom made singular contributions to implementing Vatican II’s directives for the reform and strengthening of Marian devotion in the liturgy, or, as expressed at Vatican II, who collaborated “that devotion to the Virgin Mary, especially in the liturgy, be generously fostered” (LG 67). Montfort’s incorporation of Mary into his preaching of the Gospel, in my estimation, is important for all seminarians and priests engaged in active ministry. And this isn’t good.” In the midst of the many changes after Vatican Council II, Paul VI had observed the need to prevent misunderstandings, such as viewing Our Lady as a mother-in-law rather than a mother, or diminishing Marian devotion. The shortest way to introduce Leo Scheffczyk (1920–2005) to an American theological audience is probably to state that he is “the European Avery Dulles.” Such a generalization is incorrect and yet contains a kernel of truth. At the same consistory in 2001, both master theologians were created cardinals by St. John Paul II. It is also most indicative of their contributions to theology that this date coincided with the 200th birthday of Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801–90), who informed their thinking in central ways.
