Of Stars And Sea Monsters: Creation Theology In The Whirlwind Speeches, Kathryn M. Schifferdecker Oct 2011

Of Stars And Sea Monsters: Creation Theology In The Whirlwind Speeches, Kathryn M. Schifferdecker

Faculty Publications

The whirlwind speeches at the end of Job (Job 38–41) depict a cosmos that is radically non-anthropocentric. This cosmos includes creatures and places indifferent towards human beings and quite dangerous for them. Nevertheless, God delights in these wild creatures and places and gives them a place in creation. Job responds to the whirlwind speeches by choosing to live with the same freedom God grants all of God’s creatures.

Luther On Translating The Bible, Mary Jane Haemig Jul 2011

Luther On Translating The Bible, Mary Jane Haemig

Faculty Publications

Martin Luther—reformer, theologian, exegete, pastor, teacher, and counselor—was also a skilled translator. His defense of his translation of Rom 3:28 (“by faith alone”) and of several psalms provides insight into the principles that guided his translation and continue to inform the difficult and necessary work of translation.

Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Moe: Can It Work For Bibles?, Mark A. Throntveit Jul 2011

Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Moe: Can It Work For Bibles?, Mark A. Throntveit

Faculty Publications

How does one choose among the vast number of English translations of the Bible now available? Most important, of course, is to read any translation; but then it is important to know what kind of translation it aims to be, whether it is appropriate for the intended use, and what its biases are. Comparing several translations will bring even more insight.

For Their Own Good: Moral Slavery 101--The Aristotelian Cantus Firmus, Gary M. Simpson

Faculty Publications

“Moral slavery” will sound curiously—even immorally—oxymoronic to most of us, and a “course” in Aristotle’s views on “moral slavery” will seem quaintly archaic or irrelevantly “academic.” We will be surprised to learn how much these ideas have influenced our culture and continue to influence our lives and politics.

"Written On Their Hearts": Thinking With Luther About Scripture, Natural Law, And The Moral Life, Gary M. Simpson Oct 2010

"Written On Their Hearts": Thinking With Luther About Scripture, Natural Law, And The Moral Life, Gary M. Simpson

Faculty Publications

Those who ignore Luther’s critical agility in moral reasoning based on natural law in favor of a reactionary turn to a regime of biblical law create “misery and tribulation,” as Luther lamented, and seriously enfeeble the Christian faith for life today. Christians rightly use their God-given powers of reason to work out affairs in the present order.

What Every Christian Should Know About Paul's Letters, Matthew L. Skinner Oct 2010

What Every Christian Should Know About Paul's Letters, Matthew L. Skinner

Faculty Publications

Paul was first and foremost a pastor, addressing particular issues facing people in churches he loved and tended. To read his letters properly is to understand Paul in the context of that world and of his Jewish faith—a faith not replaced but transformed by his experience of Jesus Christ.

What Difference Does It Make?: E-Learning And Faith Community, Mary E. Hess

Identity In A Digital Age, Andrew Root Jul 2010

Identity In A Digital Age, Andrew Root

Faculty Publications

Not long ago, “identity” was understood to be established and retained more-or-less as is throughout life. No longer. The digital shrinking of time and space has made identity fluid, and the church faces a new task.

Social Networking And Church Systems, Dwight J. Zscheile Jul 2010

Social Networking And Church Systems, Dwight J. Zscheile

Faculty Publications

Most existing church systems were shaped by bureaucratic organizational paradigms of a previous century that are coming under increasing stress today. The shift to a network society brings both profound challenges and great opportunities to the church in our culture.

Preaching The Seventh Commandment: "You Are Not To Steal", Mary Jane Haemig

Faculty Publications

In his catechisms, Martin Luther spoke directly about the economic life of his time. Christian preachers are invited to do the same. Only when the commandments are preached in full force—in both their positive and negative admonitions—can we know what forgiveness really means.

"The Lord Is A God Of Justice" (Isaiah 30:18): The Prophetic Insistence On Justice In Social Context, Rolf A. Jacobson

Faculty Publications

The prophets insisted on economic justice because they understood the Lord to be “a God of justice.” If justice is part of the very character of God, God's people must also embody justice.

A Communion That Is Holy: A Gospel Economy, Dirk G. Lange

Faculty Publications

The sacrament of Holy Communion trains us in a gospel economy. Receiving from God, we are taught to give. Freed from an obsessive attraction to temporal things, but also from a pious repulsion of them, we are drawn into a holy communion with God, neighbor, and material goods.

A Butterfly Effect: The Impact Of Marriage And Family Therapy Training On Students' Spouses, Carla M. Dahl, Mary L. Jensen, Jane L. Mccampbell

Faculty Publications

This qualitative study examines the impact of mar- riage and family therapy (MFT) training on the

marriages of trainees. Analysis of data from 18 spouses of alumni from a training program in an evangelical Protestant seminary found participants reporting mostly negative impacts related to time and finances, both negative and positive impacts related to role changes and adjustments, and mostly positive impacts related to marital communication. The additional contribution of this study has to do with the report of an overwhelmingly positive impact of systemic, integrative MFT training on the student’s faith as observed by their spouse and on the …
