Jesus The Jew: Contributions Of Geza Vermes To The Modern Jesus Debate, Robert A. Zelada Jan 2000

Jesus The Jew: Contributions Of Geza Vermes To The Modern Jesus Debate, Robert A. Zelada

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

In the spirit of interfaith dialog between Jews and Christians, this project focuses on the Jewish Jesus presented by Geza Vermes in his trilogy of books published during the last quarter of the twentieth century. The paper begins by looking at the life of Vermes as seen from his autobiography and continues into a review and reflection of the major themes Vermes examines in his three books on the search for the historical Jesus. Specifically, the paper covers Vermes' theories regarding intertestamental Palestine, Jesus' observance of Mosaic Law, His notion of the Kingdom of God, and His relation to the …

Saint Benedict’s Monastery Books

In With Lamps Burning, Sister Grace McDonald traced the growth of Saint Benedict’s Monastery from its establishment in Minnesota in 1857 to its centennial in 1957. It is the purpose of this sequel to capture the exciting and often troublesome challenges that faced this community in the last half of the twentieth century. It is a story of moving from a stable and predictable era to an explosive era of expanded knowledge, information, and communications that resulted in irreversible societal changes effected by such grassroots movements as civil rights, women’s rights, and environmental concerns, and by a Christian religious …

Heresy And Heortology In The Early Church: Arianism And The Emergence Of The Triduum, Martin F. Connell Mar 1998

Heresy And Heortology In The Early Church: Arianism And The Emergence Of The Triduum, Martin F. Connell

Theology Faculty Publications

The Triduum, the three-day liturgy of Easter — from Holy Thursday evening through Easter Sunday — has been so common an experience of the Christian liturgical year that it is difficult to imagine a time when the Triduum was not. But for at least the first three centuries of Christian worship, this annual celebration of Easter was only one rite, a single grand annual assembly of confessors, and soon-to-be confessors, embracing the life of God incarnate in Jesus Christ and in the members of the community. The theology of this unitive rite took in all aspects of the redemption wrought …

An Eastern Mind Attached To A Western Brain: The Influence Of Zen Buddhism On Jack Kerouac, Yuko Taniguchi Jan 1998

An Eastern Mind Attached To A Western Brain: The Influence Of Zen Buddhism On Jack Kerouac, Yuko Taniguchi

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

A great American author, Jack Kerouac, loved the Eastern philosophy, Zen Buddhism, which influenced fifteen years of his writing career. The theory of Zen Buddhism taught him what was in and out of human control as well as the true essence of nature. Kerouac reflected on and described his daily life of Zen Buddhism in his novels, and Zen Buddhism certainly became his spiritual inner home for fifteen years. However, searching for a true spirituality never settled him down emotionally; therefore his loss of faith in Zen Buddhism demolished his inner spiritual home, and his struggle began. My thesis examines …

The Existence Of The Covenant Before And After Christ In Galatians 3.15-18: A Conversation With James D.G. Dunn And J. Louis Martyn, Danielle K. Nussberger Jan 1998

The Existence Of The Covenant Before And After Christ In Galatians 3.15-18: A Conversation With James D.G. Dunn And J. Louis Martyn, Danielle K. Nussberger

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

This study looks at Galatians 3. 15-18 by entering the scholarly conversation of J. Louis Martyn and James Dunn: 1) evaluating their claims on the issue of 'continuity' and 'discontinuity' as it is adjudicated in Galatians, 2) allowing questions to emerge from this analysis, and 3) letting the sounding of this dialogue bring forth a new exegetical voice to speak about the original text. It asks the questions: How does Paul already find continuity between the past and present constructions of the covenantal community, in the face of the opponents' belief that they must enforce a continuity that is presently …

Romantic Perception: A Kierkegaardian Re-Formation Of The Appearances Via Existential Arrest Towards Conscious Imaginative Relation, Christoph Franz Dobrowolski Jan 1996

Romantic Perception: A Kierkegaardian Re-Formation Of The Appearances Via Existential Arrest Towards Conscious Imaginative Relation, Christoph Franz Dobrowolski

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

The focus of this paper is to attempt to analyze how, in Kierkegaard's paradigm of what constitutes "a self", the representations of the phenomena change in the eyes of the perceiver from a state of "no self" - lacking this consciousness and active engagement of spirit-, to the moment of existential arrest, to a state of being "a self" - new and ever-growing consciousness as a result of this arrest. The primary source for this endeavour is Kierkegaard's text, The Concept of Anxiety. Methodology for this endeavour will involve explication of the text itself with nuances from other post-enlightenment literature …

Jesus As "Son Of God", Christoph Franz Dobrowolski Jan 1995

Jesus As "Son Of God", Christoph Franz Dobrowolski

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

For the purpose of this paper, the attempt will be made to see how some contemporary scholars have addressed how the New Testament writers came to describe and proclaim Jesus as "Son of God." The attempt will also be made to see through the New Testament writers' theological retrojections of this title, to question whether or not Jesus understood himself to be "Son of God" in the same terms. Furthermore, discrepancies between consciousness and knowledge will be discussed- as contemporary scholars have presented them- in terms of Jesus' probable understanding of his divine sonship.

God And Poetry, Heidi Zapzalka Jan 1995

God And Poetry, Heidi Zapzalka

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

My thesis explores the relationship between God and poetry. I assert that poetry is not only the best language with which to speak to God, but it is the best language with which to speak of God as well. It analyzes poetry from the classical period to the contemporary period, as well as including biblical excerpts from the Hebrew Scriptures (the Psalms, Job) and the New Testament (the synoptic gospels, the Gospel of John). The poetry in the thesis falls in two categories: the celebratory poems with which we speak of God, and the poems of suffering with which we …

Abstract Liturgical Art, Adam Begnaud Osb Jan 1994

Abstract Liturgical Art, Adam Begnaud Osb

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper is the end product of an Independent Learning Project under the direction of Helen Rolfson, 0.S.F. at Saint John's University, School of Theology, Collegeville, Minnesota, which investigated the spirituality of liturgical art in the Roman Catholic tradition. The particular focus of research was on the use of abstract art and iconoclasm within the tradition and in general theory. The paper presents the author's theory of contemporary liturgical art for the Roman Catholic Church in the West based upon his findings.

The Reshaping Of A Tradition: American Benedictine Women, 1852-1881, Ephrem (Rita) Hollermann Osb

Saint Benedict’s Monastery Books

"The primary focus of this book is on the women and the way of life from 1852-1881. In researching this segment of time, the chief aims were 1) to identify the early foundresses of Benedictinism in North America, 2) to describe as far as possible the experiences and role of these women in the early spread of the Order in the United States, and 3) to discover some of the continuities and discontinuities between their life in America and in Europe. The results of this research yielded deeper insight into the nineteenth-century founding experience of American Benedictine women." [from the …

Finding Mary In A World Of Eves: St. Jerome's Discourse On The Feminine, Kirsten Devries Jan 1993

Finding Mary In A World Of Eves: St. Jerome's Discourse On The Feminine, Kirsten Devries

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

In my thesis, I discussed St. Jerome's attitudes, as represented in his letters, toward women. I found that in his discourse, he limits female autonomy and authority by pigeonholing them into one, and only one, category: the role of Eve. I furthered my argument by using the theoretical material of Michel Foucault.
