Observations On The Performative Force Of The Qyama And The Ihidaye, And Its Pertinancy Today, C. A. Chase
Observations On The Performative Force Of The Qyama And The Ihidaye, And Its Pertinancy Today, C. A. Chase
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
Using contemporary social and art theory, with particular emphasis on the notion of performative, this paper examines the historical and theological context of a unique social and ecclesial phenomenon in 4th century Syria—the Sons and Daughters of the Covenant. By observing these committed laity as a ‘living performance,’ an exploration of the identity of the faithful, both severally and as a community, may be undertaken. This paper focuses on the relation of such a performative to notions of Christology and anthropology, with an eye towards today’s laity and their seeking for identity in a complex world of competing shifting …

Consideration Of The Church's Identity And Mission, Predicated On The Church Be-Ing 'Ligamen' (Bond), C. A. Chase
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
In 1965, the Roman Catholic Church, in Gaudium et spes, declared to the world: this community realizes that it is truly linked with mankind and its history by the deepest of bonds (GS 1). Shifting her identity from being one in opposition to the modern world, she announced the possibility of becoming the very bond (ligamen) binding diverse human communities and nations of the world, whilst existing as a function, a light, an energy (GS 42). Framed against the classical understanding of ecclesia as a perfect society, and the fact that this was no longer realistic in …

Eikonoi Of God: A Christ-Pneuma Interpretation Of Humanity, Benjamin Rush

Jesus asks his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” There is no single Christology that can provide satisfaction for the multitude of answers to Jesus’ question; the history of the church is a history of different questions, motivated by different circumstances. However, the goal remains consistent: finding a way of understanding God and God’s action in history. This paper uses two tasks that emerge from this theological discourse through the lens of Eastern Orthodoxy. The first task is finding an answer to Jesus’ question in light of revelation that Christ Jesus is both truly human and truly divine, …

The Icon Unpainted, Kendall Ketterlin O.Carm.
Obsculta
the Icon Unpainted came from my prayers and personal experience of Advent, first, walking with Mary as she waited on the edge of giving birth, knowing what was to come and realizing the promises that were on the verge of becoming flesh, then opening that vision to an entire world, history of prophecy and scripture that was about to be captured in a single moment.
The Octave Day Of Christmas: Historical Development And Modern Liturgical Practice, Christopher Labadie
The Octave Day Of Christmas: Historical Development And Modern Liturgical Practice, Christopher Labadie
Obsculta
The octave day of Christmas has had a wide variety of commemorations attached to it throughout the Christian era. This work sought to trace the historical development of the feast, beginning with an ancient Marian feast from the Church at Rome. I explore some of the liturgical rites associated with this feast, and the subsequent development of the Feast of the Circumcision. I conclude the paper with a discussion of some of the more recent commemorations tied to the octave and then examine the current liturgical practices according to the Roman Missal.
Silent Liberation: Navigating Feminist Theology Through The Christological Lens Of Mary Of Bethany, Karen M. Kiefer
Silent Liberation: Navigating Feminist Theology Through The Christological Lens Of Mary Of Bethany, Karen M. Kiefer

Standing in the midst of confusion among disparate views within feminist theology, a woman in the church can feel torn between honoring her dignity as a person and honoring her faith. She hears a cacophony of voices screaming for liberation and reform that have risen from the oppression of misogyny, omission and amputation from the Christian tradition and Scripture as the result of an androcentric church history and structure. The division among these feminist voices, ranging from reform to dismantling or vacating the Christian faith altogether, can leave a woman in the church questioning Scripture, tradition, roles, and even Jesus …

Embracing Poverty Of Spirit In College Life, April L. Donovan
Embracing Poverty Of Spirit In College Life, April L. Donovan
Obsculta
In this essay I will first be addressing the relation between Johannes Baptist Metz’s Poverty of Spirit and college life. This will lead into an examination of how embracing poverty of spirit influences interpersonal relationships, and finally a call to the Church to encourage healthy dating relationships to foster spiritual development and poverty of spirit within romantic relationships. This paper will explore a Christian understanding of what it means to embrace poverty of spirit in college, and how the Church can show how poverty of spirit should affect dating relationships.

Joy As Illumination: Participation In God's Life-Giving Trinitarian Love, Trevor Beach Sj
Joy As Illumination: Participation In God's Life-Giving Trinitarian Love, Trevor Beach Sj
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This graduate paper is on the topic of joy, especially as understood in the commentaries of Adrienne von Speyr, and the writings of Hans Urs von Balthasar. In this paper, I show Christian joy as participation in God’s own joy through an illuminated and inter-personal life-giving love as given through and shown in the entire life of Jesus Christ, from the Incarnation, through the suffering Passion, and unto the Resurrection.
Philosophy, Not Theology, Is The Key For Economics: A Catholic Perspective, Daniel K. Finn
Philosophy, Not Theology, Is The Key For Economics: A Catholic Perspective, Daniel K. Finn
School of Theology and Seminary Faculty Publications
This essay addresses two important problems with mainstream economics that reduce its usefulness for people of religious faith: its eclipse of the causal forces operating within the ‘black box’ of the market, and its empiricist methodological underpinnings. Yet neither of these problems requires religious resources for a solution. The critical realist philosophy of science of Roy Bhaskar provides a fruitful alternative to empiricism. The insights of critical realist sociologists to understand markets as social structures provide a helpful way to direct economists’ attention to important but neglected market relations.

The Christological Remnants Within Eucharistic Prayers, Nathan Peter Chase
The Christological Remnants Within Eucharistic Prayers, Nathan Peter Chase
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This paper explores the development of Christology in the early Church concluding with a look at Angel Christology in the Roman Canon and Logos Christology in The Prayers of Sarapion of Thmuis. A lack of Christological precision in early Christian praying has anachronistically led modern scholars to question the orthodoxy of early prayers. This paper argues that just as liturgical scholars have long realized that the development of liturgy moved from diversity to uniformity, so too this is the case with theology. The movement to tighten the borders of orthodoxy has led to liturgical standardization. Just as the dating of …
Christ, The Meeting Point Of Sacramental And Trinitarian Theology, Nathan Peter Chase
Christ, The Meeting Point Of Sacramental And Trinitarian Theology, Nathan Peter Chase
School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses
This paper explores the relationship between the liturgical life of the Church and the operation of the Trinity in the economy of grace through the work of Fr. Edward Kilmartin. Kilmartin sought to better explain how humanity’s relationship with God through prayer and the sacraments was established. For him, theologians’ understanding of the Trinity in what has become known as the procession model allowed for the katabatic flow of grace to humanity but failed to explain the anabatic flow of grace from humanity back up to God. This paper looks at the complementary model, the bestowal model, that Kilmartin developed …

In 1843 the Catholic bishop of Philadelphia, Francis Patrick Kenrick, wrote to the Public School Board of Controllers to ask that Catholic children be spared reading of the Protestant Bible [the King James Version, KJV] and that anti-Catholic vitriol be excised from textbooks of the public schools. Historians focus on the translation divide – the Protestant King James Version versus the Catholic Douai-Rheims – but the issue closer to the heart of the matter was ritual formation (and malformation) of Christian believers, well-heeled Protestants versus poor Catholics. What happened in summer 1844, I suggest, was more accurately Rite Riots rather …
